Why this matters
A character’s first dialogue is a load-bearing introduction. The fact that Chopper’s first words are a defense of Hiriluk’s memory and Hiriluk’s dream — not Chopper’s own self-introduction, not a reaction to Kureha or to Wapol, but a stand on behalf of the absent dead mentor — is the emotional grammar of the entire Chopper-character. Chopper is defined from his first spoken syllable by:
- Loyalty to Hiriluk — the dead mentor whose dream he carries.
- Defending sacred ground — the castle Hiriluk’s memorial sits inside.
- Honoring a self-styled monster identity — he calls himself the monster that followed Hiriluk, reclaiming the village epithet (Ch. 134’s baby monster).
This is negative-space foreshadowing: the silent twelve-chapter introduction (Ch. 134-145) is the load that makes the Ch. 146 first-dialogue land with maximum weight. The full payoff is the Drum-arc Chopper-Hiriluk flashback (already on-page in Ch. 141-145) — where the loyalty-tell here is shown to be a years-long bond.
