Why this matters
This is the chekhov-explicit foreshadowing technique at its purest: the chapter explicitly stages a promise the universe says is impossible (“This is a winter island. Cherry blossoms will never bloom here!!”) and the speaker doubles down (“They will!!!”). The reader is told in plain text that the cherry-blossom-bloom is the arc’s emotional climax — the only suspense is how. Hiriluk’s body-burst prototype on p. 12 telegraphs the how: not natural blossoms, but explosive cherry-blossom-pigment release weaponizing his own chemistry. The mechanism, the agent, and the symbolic register are all front-loaded in the flashback chapter. The swan song term also pre-loads that Hiriluk will not survive to see his own payoff.
