Summary

Cover-art opens the chapter (p. 1): Django’s Dance Heaven, Vol. 14 — “Calculating the outcome of the dance contest” — Django mid-dance under the Mirror-Ball Island disco-ball, suspended-arms pose, 18 score-marker visible. Continuation of the post-Black-Cat-Pirates Django cover-serial.

The chapter is a sustained Hiriluk-Kureha flashback set inside Dr. Kureha’s mountain-castle windmill-library, intercut with the wandering reindeer-Chopper. Hiriluk — a tall, gaunt, white-haired man with a pirate-flag shirt (skull-and-crossbones, no eye sockets) and an enormous Q-tip top-hat — is dying. He shows Kureha his blackened, rotting hand (p. 2): “I’m… dying.” Kureha confirms it bluntly — “You’re a goner. Kak kak kak… Yes.” — and refuses to indulge him: “Isn’t it better to kick the bucket and get it over with?” Hiriluk pleads for more time — “I just need a little more time. Kureha goads him: if he wants to live so badly, why not go back to “that land in the far west… that saved your life way back when you were a notorious robber” — and “go see those miraculous cherry blossoms” (pp. 3-4). Hiriluk refuses — “Right here!!! Because I’m going to make cherry blossoms bloom…” Kureha: “You’re a fool. This is a winter island. It’s freezing cold all year round!! Cherry blossoms will never bloom here!!” Hiriluk doubles down — “They will!!!” — and confesses his backstory: “I was a worthless outlaw on the verge of death, but I recovered and lived. A small reindeer in a pink top-hat with a white X-cross — Chopper — has been peeking through the windmill’s circular window (pp. 5-6). Kureha spots him (“What is that thing, anyway? That creature that came with you?”); Hiriluk has snuck out (PEEK; TMP TMP TMP TMP — Chopper hoofing off into the snow). Kureha presses: “He’s been living with you for a year… and you suddenly kicked him out?” Hiriluk explains the cruelty has a purpose — “If I suddenly died before his eyes… it would be a terrible shock for him!! I’d like to spare him that!!” (p. 7) — and his greater goal: “We’re a lot alike, he and I, but… I want to show him one last thing… that anything is possible, by making cherry blossoms bloom!!!”

Kureha gives her verdict (p. 7): without a miracle, the bacteria will kill Hiriluk. “But I can fool your body… for three weeks. Unfortunately, you can’t afford it. …you’re going to die in four days at 5

That’s how long you have.” Hiriluk’s response is to draw an anesthesia pistol on her (CHAK!!, p. 8): “JUST TREAT ME!!!” Kureha laughs him off — “You’re not going to kill anyone with an anesthesia pistol…” — knocks him out (Fzzzzz) and accepts the deal: “All right, I’ll treat you. But we’ll see what you can do for this country as a doctor. I’ll be watching you!!” And then the chapter-title-drop: “Yes, you two are alike. You’re both clumsy.”

Cut to reindeer-Chopper in the snow forest (pp. 9-12). He wanders the woods (TMP TMP TMP / SWAY), is shaken by a falling-tree thunderclap (THWAK!), and watches a cherry-blossom-bomb prototype detonate (SHWOO / THWAM) from the snowy woods. He returns to the windmill — books and equipment strewn from the blast (KLUNK KLUNK) — to find Hiriluk gone (FWUP FWUP — pages riffling). Chopper’s confused close-up. Hiriluk emerges outside, rifle drawn (BLAM!! BLAM!!): “And never come back!!! Go to the sea or something!!!” Chopper bolts. Hiriluk lowers the rifle, eyes shadowed: “I’d never… shoot you!!!” (p. 11) — confirming the rifle was a fake-out to drive Chopper away. Hiriluk turns back into the windmill (SHWOO).

Back at his desk Hiriluk speaks aloud to the absent Chopper (p. 12): ”…Chopper!! I’m sorry… But wait until you see my cherry blossoms. They will be my swan song!!” And then his body bursts (GWAAH!! BOOM!!) — a botched cherry-blossom prototype detonating from within him, throwing pigment-pink-blossom-fall outward across the snow (SHWOO).

The blast-radius hits a reindeer herd (pp. 13-14). Full-page panel: a herd of antlered reindeer in marching formation under the snow-trees (DOOM!). Chopper, in his small human-toddler form (his Devil-Fruit-walking-form), is shown approaching the herd (KRUNCH KRUNCH), pulling out his hat in greeting — and the herd attacks him (THWAM!! — p. 14). Hiriluk’s narration carries over: “Time is running out for me!!!! …Blast!!! KA-BOOM!!” Chopper is trampled (KLOMP KLOMP); reindeer hooves cycle over him (WOO!); a final THWAM leaves him crumpled (p. 15). Hiriluk’s voiceover continues, intercut with the one-piece skull-and-crossbones banner hung inside the windmill-castle and a pirate flag prop in the lab (p. 15): “That’s why I’m hoisting the skull and crossbones against every disease there is!!! When a man hoists a pirate flag, there’s nothing he can’t do!!! Never forget that, Chopper!!!” — the chapter’s thesis-statement.

Chopper (back in his small reindeer form) recovers and finds something in the snow (p. 16): “That’s it!! Found one!” — “An Amiudake mushroom.” Hiriluk’s offscreen exposition: “Yeah, there’s some mushroom that grows only on this island and it may or may not be effective against all sorts of illnesses.” Chopper picks his way across a vast snowy ravine (WOOOOO) and finds himself face-to-face with the antlered reindeer herd again (SNORT) at the chapter’s lower panel — they bristle.

Page 5 — Wide windmill-interior panel. Hiriluk (raving, fist clenched): “No one need die of disease ever again!!! Such things do exist!!! And I want to prove it here in the land of my birth!!! I just want… a little more time!!!” Side-panel: Chopper peeking through the windmill’s circular window (PEEK, SHOOM, TWO TWO TMP). Page 6 — Chopper hoofing away through the snow forest (TMP TMP TMP, snowscape). Kureha (in windmill): “He’s been living with you for a year… and you suddenly kicked him out?” Hiriluk: “So… I’d like to spare him that!!”
Page 7 — Hiriluk: “If I suddenly died before his eyes… it would be a terrible shock for him!! That’s right! I’m the only friend he’s ever known.” Hiriluk close-up: “We’re a lot alike, he and I, but… I want to show him one last thing… that anything is possible, by making cherry blossoms bloom!!!” Kureha (diagnostic): “Now listen, you’re going to die in four days at 5
P.M. That’s how long you have. But I can fool your body… for three weeks. Without a miracle, you can’t rid your body of the bacteria that’s killing you. Unfortunately, you can’t afford it.” (Caption — Page 135.)
Page 8 — Hiriluk draws his anesthesia pistol on Kureha (CHAK!): “JUST TREAT ME!!!” Kureha (arms crossed, deadpan): “You’re not going to kill anyone with an anesthesia pistol. But all right, I’ll treat you. We’ll see what you can do for this country as a doctor. I’ll be watching you!!” Hiriluk slumps under sedative (Fzzzzz). Last panel — Kureha, smirking down: “Yes, you two are alike. You’re both clumsy.” The chapter-title-drop.
Page 9 — Reindeer-Chopper bolting across the snow forest (THWAK!!, TMP TMP TMP); cuts to him jolting against a tree trunk under a falling-branch sound (SHWOO, WHUP, THWAK!!, THWAM…!!, WUMP WUMP).
Page 10 — Chopper inside the wrecked windmill (KLUNK KLUNK) — books strewn from a recent blast (FWUP FWUP) — finds Hiriluk gone. Chopper’s confused close-up. Page 11 — Chopper running through the snowfields (KRUNCH KRUNCH); Hiriluk lowering the rifle, eyes shadowed: “…shoot you!!!” / “I’d never…” — confirming the rifle-fire was a deliberate fake-rejection. Hiriluk turns back into the windmill (SHWOO). Far panel: Chopper in the snow ravine, alone.
Page 12 — Hiriluk enters the windmill (SHWOO), grim-faced, sweating, addressing the absent Chopper: ”…Chopper!! I’m sorry… But wait until you see my cherry blossoms. They will be my swan song!!” His body bursts (GWAAH!! BOOM!!) — pigment-pink-blossom-fall outward (SHWOO).
Pages 13-14 — Blast-radius pans outward across the snow-forest. A full panel reveals a herd of antlered reindeer in marching formation (DOOM!) — and Chopper (in his human-toddler form: small, bipedal, holding his pink top-hat) walks up to greet them (KRUNCH KRUNCH). Hiriluk’s offscreen voiceover: “I hate it when that happens!!” / “Time is running out for me!!!” / “Blast!!!” / KA-BOOM!! — and on p. 14 the herd suddenly charges him (THWAM!!).
Page 15 — Hooves trample Chopper (KLOMP KLOMP, WOO!, THWAM!!). Cuts to a wall of one-piece skull-and-crossbones flags and decals inside the windmill-castle. Hiriluk (voiceover, fist clenched over a pirate flag in the lab): “That’s why I’m hoisting the skull and crossbones against every disease there is!!! When a man hoists a pirate flag, there’s nothing he can’t do!!! Never forget that, Chopper!!!”
Page 16 — Chopper (in human-toddler form) holding up a mushroom: “That’s it!! Found one!” / “An Amiudake mushroom.” Hiriluk’s offscreen exposition: “Yeah, there’s some mushroom that grows only on this island and it may or may not be effective against all sorts of illnesses.” Chopper picks his way across a vast snowy ravine (WOOOOO); panel-end finds him face-to-face with the antlered reindeer herd again (SNORT).

Open questions raised

Where is the land in the far west? Hiriluk says he was cured by miraculous cherry blossoms in “that land in the far west” (p. 3); the location is not named. Forward-canon: not yet pinned to a specific named region. A foundational the cherry-blossom cure is real and exists out in the world in-fiction premise — pre-loads forward-canon medical-mythology.
What is Hiriluk’s specific bacterial illness? Diagnosed by Kureha as a bacteria he cannot rid his body of without a miracle; four days to live (p. 7). Not named on-page.
What is the volatile cherry-blossom chemistry that makes Hiriluk’s body explode? The body-burst on p. 12 implies a pigment-chemistry self-experiment — but the mechanism is not yet on-page.
What happened to Hiriluk in the week between the cherry-blossom-bomb body-burst and the one week later knock? Heavily injured, bandaged, but conscious and answering the door (p. 17). Forward-canon: explained in the next chapter.
Is the Amiudake mushroom actually effective? Hiriluk hedges it may or may not be. Chopper is staking Hiriluk’s life on it. Forward-canon hint: the may or may not is doing heavy lifting — the mushroom is in fact poisonous.
What was Hiriluk’s pre-cure outlaw life? “Notorious robber”, “worthless outlaw on the verge of death” — no name, no location, no specific crimes named. The doctor-from-the-criminal-class register is set but undeveloped.
Why does Chopper’s herd reject him so viscerally? Page 13-14’s charge registers as more than territorial — Chopper’s blue nose and antlers, plus his form-shifting Devil-Fruit nature, mark him as visibly other. The mechanism is shown but not yet explained.
