Why this matters
The Hiriluk name install — re-uttered in present-day on the castle wall after the Ch. 141 mausoleum reference and the Ch. 141-145 flashback chapters — is the central absent-figure load of the Drum arc. Three speakers (Kureha, Wapol, Chopper) all name him in a single castle-scene; he never appears on-page in Ch. 146; and the entire structural conflict of the arc rotates around him. He is:
- Chopper’s mentor / adoptive father figure — the monster that followed Hiriluk (Wapol, p. 8). Chopper is loyal enough to fight to the death to keep Wapol off the castle in Hiriluk’s name.
- Kureha’s predecessor / colleague — Kureha installed his memorial inside Drum Castle (p. 8), against the king’s prerogative.
- The dream-bearer of the Drum arc — Chopper articulates his goal: ‘Dr. Hiriluk just wanted to save this country!!!’ (p. 9). His dream — forward-canon: the cherry-blossom miracle — is the banner of faith flying over Drum Castle (p. 9).
- The Wapol-faction’s epithet-target — that bumbling quack (p. 10). His credentials were disputed; his loyalty-group reclaims the quack doctor honorific.
The negative-space introduction (a deceased character defined by his absence and the loyalty he commands in others) is the classic dialogue-from-dead-character foreshadowing technique: a character we never meet on-page in this chapter generates more emotional load than any character we do meet. The full payoff is the Drum-arc Chopper-Hiriluk flashback (already on-page in Ch. 141-145) and the cherry-blossom-snow finale.
