Why this matters
This is Oda’s first on-page partial-disclosure villain reveal: the antagonist drops a backstory connection mid-fight that recontextualizes both his motive and his stature, while withholding the ship/captain that would lock the connection to a known faction. The technique recurs throughout the series (Crocodile’s Whitebeard-era grievance, Doflamingo’s Corazon-shaped grief, Kaido’s Rocks/Whitebeard-era resentment).
The chapter also establishes the recurring pattern that Shanks’s stature is validated by his peers’ reactions to him — not by his own dialogue. Across the series Shanks’s significance is overwhelmingly delivered by other people’s faces and lines about him. Ch 18 is the first instance.
