Captain of the Royal Guard of Alabasta · jackal-mask hood · serves King Nefertari Cobra · paired on-page with Pell
Profile
One of the two senior captains of King Nefertari Cobra’s Royal Guard, paired on-page with Pell. First appears in Ch. 164 (pp. 10-12) wearing a jackal-style hood/mask and a striped robe. Vivi addresses him by name on first appearance: “Pell, Chaka…” (p. 10).
Cobra orders him to make medical arrangements for the wounded Sand-Sand Band children (p. 11). The jackal-coding pre-installs his forward-canon Zoan devil-fruit register (Inu Inu no Mi, Model Jackal) — visual-tell-before-power-reveal pattern. The mask-as-animal-coding pairs Chaka (jackal = Anubis, underworld / death) with Pell (falcon = Horus, sky / kingship) — Egyptian-pantheon flanking the Nefertari pharaoh.

Arc-by-arc updates
Reverie prelude (Ch. 823)
- Attends the ailing King Nefertari Cobra; urges him to turn back if his health fails (p. 4).
Post-Enies Lobby (Ch. 439)
- Present in the Alabasta-palace scene as Vivi’s retainers discuss Nico Robin’s wanted poster (pp. 17-18).
Alabasta aftermath — graveyard mourning (Ch. 217) — Stowaway — mourns the presumed-dead Pell; “I can’t even shed a tear”
- Mourns Pell at a desert cross-graveyard (Ch. 217 pp. 9-10). Cloaked, alone, gaunt in profile: “Why is that, I wonder?” / ”…I can’t even shed a tear.” / “Pell…” First on-page Chaka-grief beat — the surviving Royal-Guard partner mourning his presumed-dead counterpart (Pell-falcon/Horus & Chaka-jackal/Anubis, the guardian-deity pair). Foreshadows the Pell-is-alive reveal payoff — in-world, Chaka does not yet know Pell survived the Ch. 0207/0208 blast. Cross-link Pell (mourned), Alabasta.
Alabasta — wind-down (Ch. 213)
- Turns away the Marine search party at the palace, flatly denying that pirates are being harbored: “You heard me. They are not here.” / “You’re not helping this kingdom by lying!!” (the Marine) — “Now be gone!” (p. 8). First on-page royal-guard-shields-the-Straw-Hats-from-the-Navy beat; the crown actively obstructs the Navy to repay the crew. Cross-link Marines, Nefertari Cobra, Alubarna.
Alabasta — civil-war end (Ch. 211) — orders both armies to lay down arms; appears with the revealed-alive Igaram
- Lands among the still-armed rebels and orders both sides to disarm (Ch. 211 p. 3): ”…SOLDIERS OF THE KING!! … THROW DOWN YOUR WEAPONS… YOU TOO, REBELS!!” Monumental foreground panel-composition canonizes his command-presence at the war’s end.
- Appears alongside the revealed-alive Igaram — the two re-establish Royal Guard authority as the rebellion stands down. Cross-link Igaram (Ch. 0211 co-arrival, revealed-alive), Koza (Ch. 0211 rebel-leader who kneels), Alubarna (Ch. 0211 war’s-end palace square).
Alabasta — bomb-search at Alubarna (Ch. 202) — coordinates the search for Crocodile’s hidden cannon in the palace square
- Coordinates the cannon-search at the palace square (Ch. 202 pp. 10-12). Chaka is among the Royal-Guard/Strawhat search effort racing to find Crocodile’s hidden bomb before it fires on the packed square. Continues his Ch. 0179/0181 defend-the-capital command-role into the climax’s defuse-the-device phase. Alabasta — The Leaders (Ch. 197) — jackal-Zoan combat at the palace square; guardian-deity narration; stalls the officer-agent so Koza/Vivi can act
- Jackal-Zoan combat continues at the Alubarna palace square; first on-page guardian-deity narration (Ch. 197 pp. 11-13). Chaka fights a Baroque Works officer-agent in full anthropomorphic jackal-hybrid form. Narration: “All enemies of the royal family… must be destroyed!” / “The Jackal! The guardian deity of Alabasta…” — first on-page guardian-deity-of-Alabasta narration for Chaka. NOTE (continuity): the first full on-page Inu Inu no Mi, Model Jackal transformation + on-page fruit-naming is already canonized at Ch. 196 (bystanders: JACKAL MODEL!! / MUTT-MUTT FRUIT… / A ZOAN TYPE…); Ch. 0197 is the continuation of the jackal-form combat, adding the guardian-deity narration register. The “visual-tell-before-power-reveal” / “name-encodes-future-power” pattern (Ch. 0164 mask → Ch. 0167 caption → Ch. 0187 RAAAAH pre-tell) completed at 0196. - Defiant-stand register; stalls a Baroque Works officer-agent (Ch. 197 pp. 11-13). Wounded, to Crocodile-tier antagonist: “As long as there’s a spark of life in me… I will fight on.” Intercepts an officer-agent who once begged him for sword-lessons (“What a pest. And after you begged me to teach you.” / agent: “Hey, no fair! Go easy on me!”) — first on-page Chaka-knows-this-agent-personally beat. Tells Koza and Vivi: “I can still stall him for a few minutes! …Koza, Princess Vivi, do what you must!” — first on-page Chaka-buys-time-for-the-stop-the-war-plan beat.
- Cross-link Koza (Ch. 0197 enabled to act), Vivi (Ch. 0197 enabled to act), Crocodile (Ch. 0197 magnificent fool taunt-exchange), Inu Inu no Mi, Model Jackal (Ch. 0197 jackal-form-combat).
Alabasta — Alubarna Palace (Ch. 196) — jackal Zoan transformation on-page; defeated by Crocodile; defends the Kicking Claw Force
- LOAD-BEARING — Chaka transforms into his jackal Zoan form on-page (Ch. 196 p. 11). Bystanders name it: “JACKAL MODEL!! / MUTT-MUTT FRUIT… / HMM… A ZOAN TYPE…” The Ch. 0164 jackal-mask visual-tell → Ch. 0167 CHAKA THE JACKAL caption → Ch. 0187 RAAAAH Zoan-pre-transformation cliffhanger fully cashes. Deploys named attack Howling Fangs!! at Crocodile (p. 12). - Pleads with the Kicking Claw Force to stop before they engage Crocodile (Ch. 196 pp. 8-10): “You fools!!” / “Chaka, stop! Don’t you throw away your life too!” (the Force begs forgive us for taking matters into our own hands, Lord Chaka). First on-page Chaka-as-restraint-voice-against-suicidal-loyalty beat — counterweights his own subsequent self-sacrificial transformation.
- Defeated by Crocodile (Ch. 196 p. 12) — Crocodile: “Will you… die for your king as well?” Crocodile pronounces over the fallen Chaka: “Weakness… is an unforgivable sin.” (p. 18). First on-page Chaka-defeated beat; pre-loads the forward-canon Royal-Guard-cannot-stop-Crocodile arc-floor.
- Cross-link Crocodile (Ch. 0196 defeats-Chaka), Alubarna (Ch. 0196 palace-set-piece), Kicking Claw Force (Royal-Guard unit Chaka tries to restrain).
Alabasta — Alubarna Palace (Ch. 189)
- Acknowledged by Cobra as having served as acting Royal-Guard Commander for more than two years without Igaram. First on-page time-anchor for Chaka’s acting-commander tenure.
- Welcomes Vivi home in the palace upper hall: “In the two years you’ve been away… you’ve grown wise as well as beautiful.”
- Present at the palace when Crocodile arrives.
- Cross-link Chaka Two Years Without Igaram Royal-Guard Hold-Together Acknowledgment (new — confirmed), Nefertari Cobra (Ch. 0189 two-year-acknowledgment source), Vivi (Ch. 0189 welcomed-home target), Igaram (Ch. 0189 referenced as the absent guide whose duties Chaka covered).
Alabasta — Alubarna palace, accepts Vivi’s destroy-the-palace decree (Ch. 188)
- LOAD-BEARING — Chaka accepts Vivi’s destroy-the-palace order: AS YOU WISH (Ch. 188 p. 3). Acting Royal Guard commander accepts an order that overrides 4,000 years of palace tradition during the King’s absence. First on-page Chaka-recognizes-Vivi-as-monarch-substitute beat. Pre-loads Chaka’s forward-canon defense-of-Alubarna role and his Inu-Inu-Model-Jackal Zoan combat tier. Cross-link Chaka As You Wish Vivi-Authority Recognition Beat (new), Vivi (Ch. 0188 acting-monarch evidence add).
- Visual: centurion-style armored helmet + cape; monumental panel-composition (foreground monolith) — visually canonizes Chaka’s command-presence at the chapter that confirms his authority-to-obey.
Alabasta — Alubarna Palace (Ch. 187) — Stalemate — Royal Guard Acting Commander commits to Vivi’s destroy-the-palace plan; Zoan-pre-transformation cliffhanger
- Reacts in horror to Vivi’s destroy the palace plan-articulation (Ch. 187 p. 18). Chaka close-up (aghast, fanged-teeth-bared): ‘YOU CAN’T BE SERIOUS, PRINCESS VIVI!! If we do that…’ — the Royal-Guard Acting Commander reads the plan as obviously treasonable on its face. Vivi’s THIS IS NOT ALABASTA, CHAKA! arc-thesis articulation (p. 18) is the persuasion-mechanism that converts him.
- LOAD-BEARING — commits to the plan after Vivi’s arc-thesis articulation (Ch. 187 p. 19). Chaka (silhouette thickens / jaw-shadow widens): ‘RAAAAH… You can leave the rest to me!’ — first on-page Chaka-personally-commits-to-Vivi’s-plan beat. The Royal-Guard Acting Commander commits to physically destroying the royal seat on the princess’s order. The Ch. 167 trust-the-princess-and-Igaram doctrine (read from Igaram’s letter at the royal court) cashes operationally here at the physically-destroy-the-palace-on-Vivi’s-order tier. Cross-link Chaka People-Are-The-Kingdom Echo Vivi-Plan-Acceptance (new — load-bearing).
- LOAD-BEARING — first on-page Chaka-Zoan-pre-transformation beat (Ch. 187 p. 19, RAAAAH). Silhouette darkens / thickens / jaw-shadow widens / RAAAAH growl — first on-page Chaka-transforms-into-jackal-form pre-tell beat. The Ch. 0164 jackal-mask visual-tell + Ch. 0167 captioned Royal-Guard-Lieutenant-Acting-Commander rank now extend into a Zoan-pre-transformation cliffhanger for the next chapter. Pre-loads the forward-canon Inu Inu no Mi Model Jackal full-transformation reveal — the devil-fruit-pre-tell-before-full-reveal pattern (cf. Pell’s falcon-coding Ch. 0164 → Tori Tori Model Falcon transformation Ch. 0169). Cross-link Inu Inu no Mi, Model Jackal (Ch. 187 user-Zoan-pre-tell evidence add), Chaka The Jackal Royal Guard Acting Commander Debut (Ch. 187 Zoan-pre-tell evidence add).
- Cross-link Vivi (Ch. 187 destroy-the-palace plan-articulator), Alubarna (Ch. 187 throne-hall plan-acceptance evidence add).
Alabasta — Supersonic Duck Quiz (Ch. 181) — defensive-wall combat-command at Alubarna; Defend the gates with your lives doctrine; recognizes the Supersonic Duck Squadron as Royal-Guard-affiliated
- First on-page Chaka-at-Alubarna-defensive-wall combat-command (p. 3). Chaka (full silhouette, jackal-mask hood, Royal Guard officer at the walltop): “GET READY MEN!! DEFEND THE GATES WITH YOUR LIVES!!” / “YES, SIR!” / “DON’T LET THEM SET FOOT IN THE CITY!!!” Subordinate: “LORD CHAKA!! REBELS SIGHTED NINE MILES TO THE SOUTH!!” The Ch. 167 summon my officers and devise a plan of attack dispatch order is operationally cashed.
- Recognizes the Supersonic Duck Squadron at the gate — orders them let through (p. 13). Chaka (binocular view, QUACK!!! sound): “NO, WAIT!! THAT’S THE SUPERSONIC DUCK SQUADRON!!! LET THEM IN!!!” — first on-page Chaka-recognizes-Karoo’s-squadron-as-Royal-Guard-affiliated — confirms the Karoo Supersonic Duck Squadron operates under the Royal Guard institutional umbrella.
- Cross-link Karoo (squadron-leader recognized), Alubarna (Ch. 181 defensive-wall combat-command evidence add), Chaka Defend The Gates With Your Lives Royal-Guard Final-Stand Doctrine (new), Chaka The Jackal Royal Guard Acting Commander Debut (Ch. 181 operational-wall-defense evidence add).
Alabasta — Alubarna defense (Ch. 179) — defend-the-kingdom-with-our-lives doctrine + 2-million-rebel intelligence
- LOAD-BEARING — Royal Army defense doctrine at Alubarna (Ch. 179 p. 13). Organizes cannon emplacement at the south gate (“More cannonballs!! Mount the cannon at the south gate!!”); receives intelligence the rebel force numbers over two million — vs the Ch. 0167 canonized 700,000, a ~3x overstatement (intelligence-degradation or BW disinformation). Articulates: “We must defend this kingdom with our lives!!! That’s why we have to win this battle!! Don’t let the enemy’s numbers discourage you!! For the sake of His Majesty, and for Princess Vivi…” See Chaka Defends The Kingdom With Our Lives Doctrine (new — load-bearing).
- Rank-and-file loyalty register acknowledged on-page (Ch. 179 p. 13) — veteran soldier: “How could anyone believe it!? I’ve served his majesty for ten years… Something bad has befallen his majesty!!” First on-page rank-and-file Royal Army acknowledgement that the king’s status is compromised — proves Chaka’s army has rank-and-file emotional-investment in Cobra personally.
- Featured in closing caption-sequence as those who fight (Ch. 179 p. 16) — narrator-canonization of his role as the army’s defensive-commander.
- Cross-link Nefertari Cobra (king-defended-without-knowing-he’s-hostage), Koza (rebel-counterpart), Alabasta Rebel Forces 700000 Strong Troop-Count (numbers-discrepancy partner), Alubarna (defense-location).
Alabasta — Rebellion (Ch. 172) — authorizes Royal-Army counter-offensive war-march; defend the truth that you see with your eyes doctrine
- Authorizes the Royal-Army counter-offensive against the rebels (Ch. 172 pp. 12-13). Palace council balcony, sword-drawn: “We are the guardians of Alabasta Kingdom!!! Then we must just do our duty!!” / “We must hold the kingdom together until the king returns!! We will meet the rebel forces head-on… and destroy them!!!” / “Defend the truth that you see with your eyes!!! Defend Alabasta!!!” Royal-Army chorus: “RAAAH!!! Defend Alabasta!!” The Ch. 167 defensive-restraint doctrine converts to active offensive engagement — first on-page Chaka-orders-Royal-Army-to-engage-rebels beat.
- Articulates the defend the truth you see with your eyes doctrine (Ch. 172 p. 13). First on-page Chaka-epistemology doctrine — the Royal Army must trust their direct perception over the framed narrative. (Structurally, this is the doctrine defeated by the Bon-Clay-as-Cobra masquerade — which the Royal Army did see with their own eyes but was not the truth. Chaka’s doctrine is correct in principle but operationally subverted by Crocodile’s frame-up.)
- Cross-link Chaka Royal Army Counter-Offensive Authorization (new), Chaka Defend The Truth Doctrine (new).
Alabasta — Koza, Leader of the Rebels (Ch. 171) — Cobra has vanished from the palace; Chaka cannot mobilize army; Pell-missing operational-gap registered
- King Cobra has vanished from the Alubarna palace (Ch. 171 pp. 2-4). Chaka roars at his Royal Guard subordinates: “FIND HIS MAJESTY!!!” The palace has been searched — “the royal chambers, the balconies, the gardens — even the grain storehouses” — Cobra is nowhere. Subordinates: “IMPOSSIBLE! HE COULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN PAST THE PALACE GUARD!!” / “WE HAVE THE WHOLE PALACE UNDER SURVEILLANCE!!” The disappearance is structurally impossible by surveillance — an inside-job-only event. See Cobra Disappearance From Alubarna Palace Mystery (new).
- LOAD-BEARING — Royal Guard’s constitutional limit canonized (Ch. 171 pp. 3-4). Chaka: “I CAN’T LEAD THE KING’S ARMIES ON MY OWN AUTHORITY!!! Why now?! What could have happened? Should anything happen to King Cobra…” First on-page articulation of the Royal Guard’s constitutional restraint: even as Acting Commander (Ch. 0167 canon), Chaka cannot march the army without a sovereign-order. Operation Utopia exploits this structural gap — by simultaneously making the king vanish (palace) and appear (Nanohana to commit an atrocity), Baroque Works freezes the Royal Army at the moment it would otherwise deploy. See Chaka Cannot Mobilize Army Without Royal Order Doctrine (new — load-bearing).
- Pell-missing operational-gap registered (Ch. 171 p. 3). Chaka (quiet): “Finding people is Pell’s specialty. If only he were here.” First on-page Chaka-references-Pell-by-name-as-tracker-asset. Cross-canon-tell: the reader knows Pell is unconscious in Rainbase (Ch. 0170); Chaka does not. The Royal Guard’s tracker-asset has been quietly neutralized 24+ hours before Cobra’s disappearance — engineering, not coincidence. See Pell Missing Searches For King Operational Gap (new).
- Subordinate runs in with info on Cobra’s whereabouts (Ch. 171 p. 4) — “W-WE HAVE SOME INFORMATION… ON HIS WHEREABOUTS…” Chaka reels (WHAT?!). Cliffhanger; presumably the Bon-Clay-as-Cobra-in-Nanohana report.
- Cross-link Pell (named-as-missing tracker-specialist), Nefertari Cobra (missing king), Alubarna (palace search-set-piece site), Chaka The Jackal Royal Guard Acting Commander Debut (operational-restraint evidence add — the acting-commander cannot mobilize the army).
Alabasta — Battlefront (Ch. 167) — Royal Guard Lieutenant (Acting Commander) captioned debut; defensive-restraint articulator; converts to offensive operations; dispatched to organize the war-march
- Captioned name + rank debut at Alubarna Palace (pp. 12-18). Caption p. 12: “CHAKA THE JACKAL / LIEUTENANT (ACTING COMMANDER) / ROYAL GUARD OF ALABASTA”. Acting Commander caption canonizes Igaram’s commander-seat as vacant since Whisky Peak (Ch. 113). The Ch. 0164 jackal-mask-hood debut now lands its on-page captioned-rank: Lieutenant (Acting Commander).
- Articulates the defensive-restraint doctrine (p. 12). “His Majesty refuses to allow us to attack. We can only fight defensively. Our soldiers grow restless…” Speaks for the operational-restraint imposed by the king’s people-are-the-kingdom doctrine — counterweight to Pell’s offensive doctrine.
- Honors the absent Igaram (p. 13). Reads Igaram’s letter (“I am leaving the country for a while.”): “As does Princess Vivi. He has a plan… He would never betray the kingdom.” Trust-the-princess-and-Igaram doctrine articulated.
- Kneels and accepts the war-order (p. 16). “Forgive me, your majesty… even more than with you!!” — apology for prior resistance to the king’s now-revealed correctness.
- Dispatched to organize the war-march (p. 18). “Chaka! Summon my officers and devise a plan of attack.” / “Yes, sire!” / “Send every last soldier to Rainbase!! We march at dawn!!” The royal-army war-machine activates under Chaka’s organizational command.
- Jackal-coding consolidated into the Jackal-Egyptian-Anubis encoding — the Ch. 164 jackal-mask hood + Ch. 167 CHAKA THE JACKAL caption explicitly canonize Chaka as the Egyptian Anubis (god of mummification, the dead, the afterlife). Pairs with Pell-as-Horus in the Royal Guard officer-roster.
- Cross-link Chaka The Jackal Royal Guard Acting Commander Debut (new), Pell (densified Ch. 167 partner), Nefertari Cobra (king served), Vivi (princess — off-page letter-sender), Igaram (commander-of-record, vacant — Chaka serves in his stead), Igaram Leaving The Country Letter Vivi-Believed-Dead (new), Cobra People-Are-The-Kingdom Doctrine (new — the doctrine Chaka operates under).
Alabasta — debut (Ch. 164)
- First on-page appearance (pp. 10-12). Arrives alongside Cobra and Pell in the kidnapping-rescue at the Nanohana-adjacent oasis ruins. Jackal-mask hood; striped robe.
- Vivi addresses him by name (p. 10) — “Pell, Chaka…”
- Ordered to arrange medical care for the wounded Sand-Sand Band (p. 11) — Cobra: “Chaka!! Pell!! Make arrangements right away!! And the other injured members of the Sand-Sand Band too!!” — Chaka’s first on-page operational deployment is humanitarian-relief logistics, not combat. Pre-installs the Royal-Guard-as-civic-protectorate register.
- Jackal-coded headwear — pre-install for forward-canon Inu Inu no Mi, Model Jackal Zoan power. See Pell And Chaka Royal Guard Captains Debut (new — LOAD-BEARING).
- Cross-link Pell (Royal Guard pair), Nefertari Cobra (king served), Vivi (princess he protects).
Notes
- Chaka (チャカ) — possibly from the African name Chaka / Shaka (cf. Shaka Zulu, warrior-king), or Egyptian/Arabic-coded.
- Jackal-mask + striped-robe wardrobe is operationally Anubis iconography — Royal Guard regalia as literal animal-deity costume. Anubis is Egyptian god of mummification / guardian of the dead — pre-loads forward-canon Chaka-protects-the-dying-kingdom register.
