- Sandora (サンドラ) — portmanteau of English **'sand'** + Sahara/Pandora register. The river is the **Nile-analog** of the Egyptian-coded Alabasta kingdom: it historically nourished the entire land (matching the Nile's role in ancient Egypt), and is now being **salt-tainted by sea-intrusion** (a direct Nile-Delta-salination parallel) and depleted by Crocodile-engineered drought. The 'sand-' is overt; the '-dora' compounds with both *Sahara* (the great African desert) and *Pandora* (box-of-evils register — fitting for the river Crocodile has poisoned).

The great river of the Alabasta kingdom. The Strawhats make their first on-page landfall in Alabasta on the Sandora’s bank in Ch. 160 p. 4. Vivi corrects Sanji’s misreading of the bank as “the edge of the island”: “This isn’t the edge of the island. This is the bank of the Sandora River.” The river’s far bank is visible from the landing point — the river is wide enough to be mistaken for an ocean shore.
Etymology
Sandora — Japanese transliteration likely a portmanteau of sand + a Latinate suffix (-dora as in amadora / dorada). The name encodes the river’s desert geography — the sand-river of the desert kingdom.

Ch. 180 — Sandora Catfish apex-predator + Kung-Fu-Jugon-pack-ferry debut
Ch. 180 pp. 11-16 — Strawhats’ first on-page Sandora River crossing set-piece. The river is 30 miles wide, second only to a sea-strait in crossing-difficulty for desert-fauna. Apex predator: Sandoran Catfish (massive whisker-mouthed, “favorite food is man”) — caption-tagged as a rare species. The crossing methodology was solved by:
- Pincers the Crab Mover (a “Crab Mover” — creatures of the desert; they hate the water — accelerated to top-speed water-walking via Sanji’s swimsuit-photo dance-girl lure).
- Mid-river catfish-attack deflected by the Kung Fu Jugon pack — they recognized the Strawhats as disciples of their master (Luffy, per Ch. 0113) and dispatched the catfish.
- The Jugon pack then formed a swim-platform that ferried the Strawhats the rest of the way across.
