Chapter 125: Candle Champion

Summary

Cover-art opens the chapter (p. 1): Igaram in Igarappoi hairnet-disguise, Karoo in a DJK baseball cap with side-pouch and tourist-wardrobe, and a tall blonde woman in a star-sweater — composed as a survival-and-travel trio. This is the first cover-story since the Koby/Helmeppo cover-arc closed at Ch. 119, and the first on-page signal that Igaram survived the Ch. 113 Whisky Peak decoy-explosion. The cover-grammar reads as the opening installment of the Vivi’s Adventure / Diary of Koza-style cover-arc that will run through Drum and Alabasta.

Cut to the Going Merry (p. 2): Sanji alone on the ship, smoking, brows furrowed. He monologues that “They’ve been gone a long time. Something’s definitely wrong. Very wrong. Why haven’t they come back? … Could something have happened to Nami or Vivi!!?” He abandons his cooking station (“if so, this is no time for me to be cooking a lizard dinner”) and leaps ashore (TUMP!!) to initiate the rescue mission. First on-page Sanji-as-captain-substitute beat — with Luffy in the jungle, Sanji takes the go-look-for-the-missing-crew initiative.

Sanji reaches the wax-pedestal site (pp. 3-4) and finds three wax-statues — Vivi, Zoro, and Nami — bound and emotionally distorted: Vivi calls out “I love you!”, Zoro shouts “Hey! Luffy fires Gum-Gum Pistol (p. 8) — the wax-armor rings off intact (KLANG!!). Mr. 3 charges Luffy in a Championship fight… Little Garden!!!! (p. 9) — wax-armor body-slam (BAM BAM BAM BAM). Luffy counters with a foot-stomp (Stamp!!, p. 10) — but Mr. 3 rolls into a wax-ball form and detonates a candle-bomb at Luffy’s feet (Voom…).

Realization beat (p. 11): Luffy connects the waxy-mist-around-the-captives observation to the fruit’s weakness — “No matter how hard it is, it’s still wax!!!” / “Heat can melt the wax!!!” Usopp (echoing): “That mist is melted wax!! Ah! Why didn’t I see it sooner!?” Karoo (newly arrived): QUACK!!! DING!! — Karoo carries a sword. Vivi (off-pedestal voice, p. 11): “Our guys and Master Broggy haven’t been solid for very long!! Mr. 3 articulates the kill-clock (p. 12): “Heh heh!! But that won’t make any difference. You have no chance of winning!! And no more time!!” / “They’ve only got 30 seconds until their hearts stop forever!!” Miss Goldenweek (echoing): “Right about now, the darkness is closing in on your friends!! They’re tormented by pain and the horror of death!!” Usopp draws a flame and prepares “Death Blow!! Fire—” (p. 12) — interrupted by Mr. 5’s “Breeze Breath Bomb!!!” (BOOM!!) — Mr. 5’s second on-page named attack, a detonating breath-projectile that intercepts Usopp’s fire-attack mid-call.

Karoo (p. 13) attempts to free the bound captives — QUACK!! QUACK!! — and approaches the wax-pedestals, but is intercepted (the pedestal area is a wax-arena). The trio is now bound by rope from Karoo’s saddle-rigging (the duck is at the foot of the pedestals, p. 13-14). Mr. 3 strikes at Karoo (WHAM!, p. 14) — “Give up!!!” — landing a giant-wax-ball blow.

Page 14 lower — Miss Goldenweek (sipping tea / lollipop): “What are you two plotting? Won’t you let me in on it?” (addressed to the bound captives) / “Hey, take this rope!” — she hands a rope-end to Karoo, suggesting a duress-game where Karoo is given the means to pull the captives free but at the cost of Goldenweek’s involvement.

Page 15 — Karoo pulls the rope (TMP TMP TMP); the bound captives shift (“Go, Karoo!!!”, “Quack!!!”, “It’s all over” — Mr. 3 gloating). Miss Goldenweek applies paint to the captives’ wax-statue base — “Crescendo Stone!! Let’s see how many kilograms of pressure you can withstand.” The weight-scale ticks: 10 KILOS! … 100 KILOS!! … 200 KILOS!! … 500 KILOS!! (pp. 15-16). First on-page named technique for Miss Goldenweek — the Crescendo Stone technique uses paint-application to inflict accumulating gravity-pressure on the painted target.
