- **Chapter title — *Chapter 159: Come On*** (p. 1). The title is Ace's wordless challenge-call to Smoker (off-stage) and structurally Luffy's farewell-grammar to Ace (*See you on the high seas*) — *come on* as both fight-invite and let's-go-pirate-life invitation.
- **Portgas D. Ace — first on-page appearance** (pp. 4-19). Black-haired young man in cowboy/cattleman hat with red bead-rosary, shirtless under an open shirt with a large skull/jolly-roger pendant, suspenders and combat boots; sits on the *Going Merry* railing chatting with Luffy. The character whose name is later revealed as **Portgas D. Ace**, **Whitebeard Pirates 2nd Division Commander**, **Fire Fist Ace**, debuts in this chapter — though here he is named **only as *Ace*** (no surname, no D., no commander-tier on-page yet).
- **Ace = Luffy's older brother** (pp. 7-8). Luffy: *'Yup.'* / *'That was your big brother!?'* / *'Big brother!?'* Sanji: *'Well, I'm not surprised that you have a brother... but what's he doing on the Grand Line?'* Luffy: *'He's a pirate. He's after the One Piece too.'* / *'Ace is three years older than me. He left the island three years earlier.'* — First on-page canonization that **Luffy has an older brother who is also a pirate also pursuing the One Piece**. Two brothers, both Devil Fruit users (*'Two brothers who both ate the Devil Fruit'*, p. 7).
- **Ace ate a Devil Fruit — the flame/flame-flame power** (pp. 10-11). Ace: *'Don't bother. I took care of them with my Flame-Flame powers.'* — first on-page reference to Ace's fruit. (Forward-canon: **Mera Mera no Mi**, Logia.) The VIZ rendering here is *Flame-Flame* (forward-canon: Flame-Flame Fruit / Mera Mera no Mi).
- **Ace's named technique — *Fire Fist*** (p. 18). *'FIRE FIST!!!!'* — Ace torches Smoker's Marine pursuit-fleet of five Marine ships with a massive flame-fist blast (*KRAK KRAK KRAK*, *FWOOO...*). First on-page Ace named-attack.
- **Ace's *Fire Fist* / *Hiken* epithet canonized** (p. 16). The Marine subordinate ship: *'It was definitely 'Fire Fist' Ace!! I saw him!!'* / *'White-beard's Second Division commander is here!?'* — first on-page utterance of **Ace's Marine-side epithet**, *Fire Fist Ace*.
- **Ace is the Second Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates** (pp. 15, 16). Ace: *'He used to belong to Whitebeard's Second Division.'* / *'As his commander, I'm responsible.'* + Marine reaction (p. 16): *'White-beard's Second Division commander is here!?'* — first on-page reveal of Ace's rank and crew affiliation. Ace is the *commander* of Whitebeard's 2nd Division.
- **Whitebeard named on-page in the Alabasta arc** (pp. 9-10, 15). Ace: *'So how 'bout joining Whitebeard's Pirates? Your friends can come too.'* / *'WHITE-BEARD IS THE GREATEST PIRATE I'VE EVER KNOWN. I'M GONNA HELP HIM BECOME KING OF THE PIRATES. IT'S NOT GONNA BE YOU, LUFFY!!'* — first on-page Whitebeard-recruitment-pitch beat. The chapter installs **Whitebeard as the greatest pirate Ace knows** and **Ace as Whitebeard's intended King-maker**. (Whitebeard himself does not appear.)
- **Ace's chest tattoo is *Whitebeard's mark*** (p. 10). Usopp: *'IS THAT TATTOO ON YOUR BACK WHITE-BEARD... WHITE-BEARD'S MARK?'* Ace: *'YES, AND I'M VERY PROUD OF IT.'* — the cross-skull-and-crossbones mark on Ace's back/chest is canonized as Whitebeard's jolly roger. First on-page Whitebeard mark.
- **Luffy will not join Whitebeard — *Then I guess we gotta fight*** (p. 10). Luffy: *'No thanks.'* / *'Okay by me!'* / *'Then I guess we gotta fight!!'* Ace declines to fight here (*'My business here is almost finished.'* / *'Don't bother.'*) — the brother-vs-brother fight is **deferred**. First on-page Pirate-King-claim-conflict between Luffy and a near-relative.
- **Ace is hunting Blackbeard — *He's been calling himself Blackbeard lately*** (p. 15). Ace: *'HE WAS ONE OF MY HENCHMEN. HE USED TO BELONG TO WHITEBEARD'S SECOND DIVISION. HE COMMITTED THE WORST CRIME POSSIBLE FOR A PIRATE. HE KILLED A SHIPMATE AND JUMPED SHIP. HE'S BEEN CALLING HIMSELF 'BLACKBEARD' LATELY. I'M ON THE TRAIL OF A MAJOR OUTLAW RIGHT NOW. ... AS HIS COMMANDER, I'M RESPONSIBLE. IF IT WASN'T FOR THAT, I'D NEVER EVEN COME TO A BACKWATER PORT LIKE THIS.'* — **first on-page Ace-vs-Blackbeard pursuit canonization, and the first Whitebeard-internal-betrayal canonization**: Blackbeard (Ch. 133 first-mentioned in the series) is now revealed as a **former Whitebeard 2nd-Division pirate who murdered a Whitebeard crewmate and deserted**. This single line pre-loads the entire Marineford-war arc 400 chapters out.
- **Ace's vivre card / *piece of paper* given to Luffy** (pp. 13-14). Ace tosses Luffy a small piece of paper: *'I wanted you to have that.'* / *'Here.'* Luffy: *'Huh? It's just a piece of paper.'* Ace: *'Yeah, but that piece of paper will bring us together again.'* / *'Hang on to it. Always!'* / *'I want it!! Don't you want it?'* — **First on-page Vivre Card in the series**, though the name *Vivre Card* / *Life Card* is forward-canon. The paper's life-signs-tracking function is **forward-canon**; this chapter installs it as a *fate-paper between brothers*. The single most important physical prop in the series's family-lineage arc-architecture debuts here.

Summary
Cover-art (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 26: “The Man Who Ended Up Coming Back” — Django on the deck of the wrecked Buggy Pirates’ ship surrounded by Buggy’s defeated crew (Mohji bandaged, Cabaji slumped). Title-shifts back to Dance Paradise (Ch. 150 was Dance Heaven); the Man Who Ended Up Coming Back caption signals Django’s cover-serial return-leg.
In-story (pp. 2-3) — at a Marine ship docked at a palm-fronted coast (caption-implied Nanohana), Mr. 11 (the Whisky-Peak Frontier Agent captured by Smoker in Ch. 128) is still tied to a pillar on deck. Three Baroque-Works trainee-agents — the Billions — board the abandoned ship and free him. They address him as Mr. 11; demand his respect; introduce themselves as candidates to become number agents. The chapter canonizes Baroque-Works’s two-tier grunt-hierarchy on-page: Millions (named only) and Billions (shown).
Cut to the Going Merry fleeing town (p. 4). The crew (Luffy, Sanji, Nami, Usopp, Vivi, Chopper, Karoo) sprint for the ship under shouts of ‘HURRY!! THE NAVY IS COMING!!’ On the deck, a stranger in cowboy hat with skull-pendant, suspenders, and a giant tattoo (later revealed Whitebeard’s mark): ‘GEEZ… I NEVER THOUGHT… I’D MEET YOU HERE, ACE.’ (Luffy). The man: ‘THIS IS NO TIME TO TALK, LUFFY. MAKE YOUR GETAWAY. I’LL CATCH UP TO YOU LATER… …AFTER I TAKE CARE OF THESE GUYS.’
Vivi hands Karoo a letter (p. 5): ‘GO STRAIGHT TO ALUBARNA AND GIVE THIS LETTER TO MY FATHER!’ / ‘IT CONTAINS PROOF OF SIR CROCODILE AND BAROQUE WORKS’ PLOT. EVERYTHING THAT IGARAM AND I DISCOVERED… IS RECORDED HERE.’ — first on-page Vivi-Cobra communication, first on-page mention of Alubarna (Alabasta’s capital). Karoo (with backpack and instructions to ‘DRINK YOUR WATER SPARINGLY’ and ‘CONSERVE WATER!!’) sprints out across the desert solo (pp. 5-6).
On the Going Merry heading out to sea (pp. 7-10), Luffy explains the stranger: ‘YUP. THAT WAS YOUR BIG BROTHER!?’ / ‘HE’S A PIRATE. HE’S AFTER THE ONE PIECE TOO.’ / ‘ACE IS THREE YEARS OLDER THAN ME. HE LEFT THE ISLAND THREE YEARS EARLIER.’ / ‘IMAGINE THAT, TWO BROTHERS WHO BOTH ATE THE DEVIL FRUIT.’ — first on-page reveal that Luffy has an older brother who is also a Devil-Fruit-eating Pirate-King-pursuing pirate. Ace then abandons the Marine fight to come back: ‘GREETINGS, ALL. THANKS FOR LOOKING AFTER MY KID BROTHER.’ / ‘I’M HERE RESOLVING A MINOR MATTER OF BUSINESS… BUT I’M GLAD I GOT TO SEE YOU. … SO HOW ‘BOUT JOINING WHITEBEARD’S PIRATES? YOUR FRIENDS CAN COME TOO.’ Usopp recognizes the tattoo: ‘IS THAT TATTOO ON YOUR BACK WHITE-BEARD… WHITE-BEARD’S MARK?’ — Ace: ‘YES, AND I’M VERY PROUD OF IT.’ Luffy: ‘NO THANKS.’ Ace: ‘OKAY BY ME!’ — Luffy: ‘THEN I GUESS WE GOTTA FIGHT!!’ Ace declines (‘DON’T BOTHER. I TOOK CARE OF THEM WITH MY FLAME-FLAME POWERS.’) — first on-page reference to Ace’s Devil Fruit (Flame-Flame / Mera Mera no Mi, Logia, forward-canon).
Cut to Smoker in Nanohana (pp. 11-12) — ‘CAPTAIN SMOKER!! SORRY I’M LATE!!’ — Smoker, two-cigar, MARINE coat, on a Nanohana street directing his unit. ‘ALABASTA IS A BIG COUNTRY. IF WE LET THEM GET AWAY, WE’LL NEVER CATCH THEM. PORTGAZ!! WHY DID HE HAVE TO INTERFERE!?’ — first on-page utterance of Ace’s surname Portgaz. Tashigi arrives breathless (‘WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, TASHIGI?’); her subordinate reports ‘VIVI WAS WITH THOSE GUYS.’ — Tashigi: ‘THE PRINCESS!!? WHAT WAS SHE DOING WITH A BUNCH OF PIRATES!! VIVI!!?’ Smoker articulates his doctrine (p. 12): ‘YOU KNOW I HATE THE SEVEN WARLORDS OF THE SEA, RIGHT? ON TOP OF THAT, THERE’S A BAD ONE LOOSE IN THIS COUNTRY RIGHT NOW.’ / ‘SIR CROCODILE?’ / ‘THAT’S WHAT I’M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT. … HE’S ALWAYS BEEN A SHARP ONE, THAT PIRATE, BUT HE’S NOT THE TYPE… TO TAKE ORDERS FROM THE GOVERNMENT. NOT HIM! BUT RIGHT NOW… HE’S WORKING WITH THE GOVERNMENT’S FORCES.’ / ‘ONCE A PIRATE, ALWAYS A PIRATE!!! TASHIGI, REMEMBER ONE THING!!’ — Smoker’s defining Warlord-doctrine line lands on-page.
Back on the Going Merry (pp. 13-14), Ace tosses Luffy a small piece of paper: ‘I WANTED YOU TO HAVE THAT.’ / ‘HERE.’ Luffy: ‘HUH? IT’S JUST A PIECE OF PAPER.’ Ace: ‘YEAH, BUT THAT PIECE OF PAPER WILL BRING US TOGETHER AGAIN. HANG ON TO IT. ALWAYS!’ — first on-page Vivre Card / Life Card in the series, though the Vivre Card name remains forward-canon. The single most important physical prop in the series’s family-lineage arc-architecture debuts here, framed not as a tracking-device but as a brother-to-brother fate-paper.
Ace prepares to leave (pp. 14-15): ‘YOU’RE GOING ALREADY!!?’ / ‘YEAH.’ / ‘TAKE CARE OF HIM, OKAY? A KID BROTHER LIKE YOU… MAKES A BIG BROTHER WORRY.’ He explains his Alabasta-business: ‘HE WAS ONE OF MY HENCHMEN. HE USED TO BELONG TO WHITEBEARD’S SECOND DIVISION. HE COMMITTED THE WORST CRIME POSSIBLE FOR A PIRATE. HE KILLED A SHIPMATE AND JUMPED SHIP. HE’S BEEN CALLING HIMSELF ‘BLACKBEARD’ LATELY. I’M ON THE TRAIL OF A MAJOR OUTLAW RIGHT NOW. … AS HIS COMMANDER, I’M RESPONSIBLE. IF IT WASN’T FOR THAT, I’D NEVER EVEN COME TO A BACKWATER PORT LIKE THIS. NEXT TIME WE MEET… WILL BE ON THE HIGH SEAS.’ — the single most load-bearing piece of dialogue in the chapter: Ace is Whitebeard’s Second Division commander, hunting Blackbeard (Ch. 133 first-mentioned) who is revealed as a former Whitebeard 2nd-Division pirate who murdered a shipmate and jumped ship. The entire Marineford-war arc-architecture is pre-loaded in seven sentences.
The Billions appear (pp. 16-17) from five Marine ships (presumably commandeered/joined): ‘WHITE-BEARD’S SECOND DIVISION COMMANDER IS HERE!? IF WE GET HIM, THEY’LL PROMOTE US TO AGENTS FOR SURE!!! RAAAH!! MAN THE SHIP! WE’LL CAPTURE HIM AT SEA!!’ / ‘WE’VE GOT FIVE SHIPS!! JUST TRY TO ESCAPE, ANCHOR-BOY!!’ (with editor’s footnote on the anchor metaphor for Devil Fruit users). Ace launches off the prow on a small wave-runner / motor-skiff (VROOOOO, WRR…). Luffy waves: ‘SEE YOU!!!’
Ace strikes (pp. 18-19): ‘FIRE FIST!!!!’ — FWOOF… KRAK KRAK KRAK!! — a fist-shaped pillar of flame engulfs all five Marine ships at once (BO-B-BOOM!! BO-BOOM!! KRAK KRAK!!). Chapter-end close-up of Ace (p. 19): ‘SEE YOU ON THE HIGH SEAS… LUFFY!!!’ — first on-page Ace named-attack and the demonstration-scale of his fruit. Five Marine ships destroyed in a single panel.

- Page 12 — Top-row: Smoker conversationally — “You know I hate the Seven Warlords of the Sea, right? On top of that, there’s a bad one loose in this country right now. That’s what I’m trying to figure out.” / “Sir Crocodile?” / Tashigi: “The Princess!!? What was she doing with a bunch of pirates!! Vivi!!?” (first on-page Tashigi-Vivi recognition). Middle-row: Smoker close-up — “He’s always been a sharp one, that pirate, but he’s not the type… to take orders from the government. Not him! But right now… he’s working with the government’s forces.” Bottom panel (big head-shot of Smoker — DO OM!!): “Once a pirate, always a pirate!!! Tashigi, remember one thing!!” — chapter’s load-bearing doctrine line.
- Page 13 — Top-row: Luffy on the deck (“I wanted you to have that.” / “Here.” / WHUP — Ace tosses a small piece of paper). Middle-row: Ace close-up — “Hang on to it! Always!” / Luffy: “Huh?” Bottom-row: “I want it!! Don’t you want it?” / Luffy: “Yeah, but that piece of paper will bring us together again.” / Luffy: “Huh? It’s just a piece of paper.” — first on-page Vivre Card / Life Card (the foundational physical prop in the series’s family-lineage arc-architecture debuts here).
- Page 14 — Top: big-panel — Ace on the railing, the crew lined up below (Vivi, Karoo, Sanji, Usopp, Nami, Chopper, Luffy, Zoro all visible) — “A kid brother like you… makes a big brother worry.” Right side: Ace squat, smiling — ”…”. Middle-row: “You’re going already!!?” / “Huh!!?” / “I bet he gives you guys plenty of grief.” / “Yeah.” Bottom: Ace tips hat — “Take care of him, okay?”
- Page 15 — Top-row: Ace’s exposition, two-panel sweep — “He was one of my henchmen. He used to belong to Whitebeard’s Second Division. He’s been calling himself ‘Blackbeard’ lately. I’m on the trail of a major outlaw right now.” / “He committed the worst crime possible for a pirate. He killed a shipmate and jumped ship.” / “We haven’t seen each other for a long time!! Stay a little longer!!” (Luffy) / “Sorry, but I’m in a hurry.” Middle-row (wide panel): the Merry sailing past coastal cliffs — “As his commander, I’m responsible. If it wasn’t for that, I’d never even come to a backwater port like this.” Bottom-row: Ace-Luffy close-up — Ace tips hat smiling — “Next time we meet…” / ”… will be on the high seas.”
- Page 16 — Top-row: a single big panel of Marines on a fleet of ships pointing skyward, frantic: “If we get him, they’ll promote us to agents for sure!!!” / “Man the ship! We’ll capture him at sea!!” / “It was definitely ‘Fire Fist’ Ace!! I saw him!!” / “Whitebeard’s Second Division commander is here!?” (first on-page Marine identification of Ace as Fire Fist & Whitebeard’s 2nd Division commander). Middle-row: crew reactions — “You never know who you’ll meet on the ocean.” / “What an awesome big brother!!” / “An older brother!? Wow!” (Chopper) / “You guys…” / “It can’t be!! How can someone so serious and intelligent… …be related to Luffy!!?” Bottom-row: Ace launches off the Merry on a small wave-runner (VROOoo, WRR…) — “See you!!!” (Luffy waving).
- Page 17 — Top-row: Billions on five Marine ships (the same ship-flotilla as p. 2) — FWAP!! — sails flap — “Let’s go!!! We Billions are fifty strong!!! That’s more than enough!!!” / “We’ve got five ships!! Just try to escape, anchor-boy!!” (editor’s footnote: “Those who have eaten the Devil Fruit are unable to swim. They sink like anchors. — Ed.”). Middle-row: aerial shot — Ace’s wave-runner skirting between the Marine ships (SWISH—, BO-B-BOOM!!, BO-BOOM!!) — “Wah!! He’s in the air!! Shoot him!!” / “When he comes down in the ocean he’s finished!!!” Bottom: Ace lands on a small skiff with a flame-fist gathering (KRK…, TOMP!!, SPLASH) — “Aah!!”

Open questions raised
- Who is Ace? The chapter names him only Ace / Portgaz (Smoker, p. 11). His D. middle initial, his birth-name (Gol D. Ace → Portgas D. Ace), his Roger-paternity, and his Foosha-Village/Mt.-Colubo origin are all forward-canon.
- Why is Whitebeard the greatest pirate Ace has ever known? No Whitebeard appearance on-page yet; only Ace’s recruitment-pitch and pride in the tattoo. Whitebeard remains a name + a jolly roger.
- Who is the shipmate Blackbeard killed? Ace doesn’t name the victim. Forward-canon: Thatch, the 4th Division Commander, killed for the Yami Yami no Mi.
- What is Ace’s minor matter of business in Alabasta? Ace describes Blackbeard-pursuit as his reason for being in a backwater port like this — implying Blackbeard recently passed through or is in the country. Forward-canon: the trail of Blackbeard’s wake.
- What is the Flame-Flame fruit’s classification? Ace destroys five Marine ships with a single Fire Fist — the Flame-Flame powers term is non-specific. Forward-canon: Mera Mera no Mi, Logia.
- What does the piece of paper actually do? Ace says it will bring us together again — but the mechanism is unstated. Forward-canon: Vivre Card / Life Card; shrinks as holder weakens; burns at death.
- Will Smoker pursue Crocodile directly? Smoker’s Once a pirate, always a pirate doctrine signals he distrusts the Warlord — but no on-page Smoker-Crocodile interaction yet.
- What does the letter to Cobra contain, in detail? Vivi names proof of Sir Crocodile and Baroque Works’ plot and everything Igaram and I discovered. The forward-canon contents (specifically: Crocodile’s Mr. 0 identity, the rebel-army manipulation, the Dance-Powder weather-sabotage, the Pluton-search at the royal tomb) are all deferred.
- Will Karoo make it to Alubarna? First Karoo-without-Vivi solo mission — the courier-quest is open.
- Where are Mr. 11 and the Billions going? They have a ship and a captured-Frontier-Agent; they spot Ace; they chase. Their fate at sea is the chapter-end Ace-blast question.
Specialist follow-ups
- etymology — Portgas / Portgaz (forward-canon: from Portuguese Portugal / port-of-call register? or from Portuguese Edward Teach’s namesake-pirate?); Mera Mera (メラメラ, Japanese onomatopoeia for a burning/blazing fire, also for emotional rage/passion — perfect Ace match); Nanohana (菜の花, Japanese for canola flower / rapeseed flower, the yellow flower whose bloom-fields cover Japan in spring — pre-loads the yellow desert blooms register); Alubarna. High-priority: Ace’s full name Portgas D. Ace — multi-language layered etymology required (the D. lineage hint is here load-bearing).
- — check forward-canon mirrors at Marineford (every WB division-commander framed with the mark); also check the brother-with-different-cosmetic-Devil-Fruit-aesthetic visual pair (Luffy stretchy-rubber + Ace flame-fist) for the forward-canon Sabu (claw-claw) completion; check the Vivre Card hand-off composition (Ace flicks paper to Luffy, pp. 13-14) against the forward-canon Vivre Card burns at Marineford mirror.
- cover-tracker — Django cover-arc: title back to Dance Paradise (from Ch. 150 Dance Heaven); installment Vol. 26 — The Man Who Ended Up Coming Back. Django returns to the Buggy Pirates’ ship. Forward-canon: the cover-arc next pivots to Django joining Hina’s Marine unit. Log the title-shift and the Buggy-crash-return beat.
- vivre-card — load-bearing first appearance — create Ace as the first entry in the Vivre-Cards directory. This is the canonical reference card; every later vivre-card note in the vault should cross-link back to this Ch. 159 origin. The mechanic-name (Vivre Card / Life Card) is forward-canon — note in the card’s frontmatter that the chapter calls it only piece of paper.
- score-predictions — no open predictions about Ace’s debut yet (he’s a debut-chapter character). Pre-load: any forward-canon prediction about Sabu, Whitebeard’s mark, or the two-DF-brothers triplet (Luffy/Ace/Sabu) should retro-cite this chapter as the seed.
- sbs-archivist — Volume 18 SBS likely contains Ace-debut Q&A (his birthday, height, age, devil-fruit details, mother-Rouge-tease); also likely contains Whitebeard-tattoo details and the Portgas / Portgaz surname romanization. Cross-link when imported.
- master-weaver — this chapter is one of the highest-density seed-planting chapters in the East Blue → Alabasta saga arc; recommend a dedicated Ch. 159 Ace-debut seed-bundle prediction-grading pass when the Marineford payoffs (Ch. 550-576) are processed. The Hang on to it. Always! Vivre Card line is the chapter’s single most-quoted line in the fandom and should be cross-linked from every Ace-related prediction node.
