Chapter 166: Luffy vs. Vivi

Summary

Cover (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 31: “Fullbody’s Manly Dance With Tearful Protests!!” — a darker, formally-dressed Fullbody cradles Django on a balcony rail; flanking Marines hold large 異議 (objection) fans. The Django cover-arc continues with Fullbody as visual-subject.

In-story (pp. 2-13), the chapter opens at Baroque Works HQ — a hidden underground base beneath an aquarium tank. Crocodile (silhouette, p. 2) cuts off Mr. 3 mid-sentence: “Can you wait a minute? Operation Utopia?” A small ballet-silhouetted figure — Mr. 2 Bon Clay — sneaks up behind Mr. 3 (“MR. 3!!! HOW ON EARTH DID YOU SNEAK UP ON US!!!”), arriving via the Spiders Cafe rendezvous after hitching a ride behind Bunchi. Mr. 2 confirms Crocodile’s suspicion: the Straw Hat gang and Princess Vivi got away (p. 3) — Mr. 3 lied about the kill. First visual debut of Crocodile’s face (pp. 2, 4) — scarred, slick-haired, hook-handed, fur-coated.

Crocodile interrogates Mr. 3 (pp. 4-7). When the boss tries to call Sandy Island via the Transponder Snail to re-verify, he reaches “Hello, this is Restaurant Le Crap. Would you like to make a reservation?” — wrong-number-comic-deflation (p. 4). Crocodile pieces it together: Mr. 3 never used the Snail at Little Garden — the report Crocodile received was an impostor’s. He demands Mr. 3 explain the live-photographs of the Strawhats (pp. 6-7), and his patience snaps. Crocodile strangles Mr. 3 with his bare hand (“Mr. 3!!! Do you know why I gave you that position? Do you!?”) and drains the moisture from his body — “He’s drying up!!” (pp. 8-9). First on-page demonstration of Crocodile’s Suna Suna no Mi moisture-drain power (fruit-name still forward-canon). Mr. 3 dehydrates into a husk (“WA… WA…”); Crocodile drops him through a trapdoor into the aquarium, where his pet Bananagator (a banana-yellow crocodilian, GAAAAH!) waits to eat him (“Time to eat.” p. 9; “GRUMP” p. 10).

Returning to the dining hall (pp. 11-13), Crocodile delivers the operation briefing to his Officer Agents (a silhouetted Mr. 1-tier figure, an afro-haired figure, Mr. 2’s ballet-silhouette, Miss All Sunday, others). Koza, the leader of the rebels, is Vivi’s childhood friend — the princess must be intercepted before she can reach Katorea and reconcile with the rebel army. “The rebels are 700,000 strong… but the sight of her might soften their hearts! We cannot allow those two to meet!!!” (p. 11). Some of Crocodile’s Billions have already infiltrated the rebel forces. He orders Miss All Sunday: “Contact the Billions in Nanohana!! Order them to find those pirates and eliminate them immediately!!!” (p. 12). The Officer Agents salute — “Leave it to us, boss!!” — and Crocodile sends them off: “It is the eve of our utopia. Now go, all of you. You’ll be late for the party… Have fun.” (p. 13).

Cut to the desert (pp. 14-19). The Strawhats trudge across the sand toward Katorea — Luffy stops and refuses to continue. “I quit!!” / “It’s boring.” / “I wanna kick Crocodile’s butt!!!” (pp. 14-15). Vivi rebukes him: “There’s nothing we can do in that Katorea place. We’re pirates. It’d be better if we didn’t even go there.” Luffy escalates the disagreement into a moral confrontation: “You think you can stop the rebels… and none of your people are going to die!!? Without anybody getting killed!!?” — and the chapter’s load-bearing line: “That’s naive. A million people are itching to fight… We’re up against one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea… People die.” (p. 16). Vivi snaps and slaps him (“WHAM!!” p. 17): “Shut up!! Don’t say things like that!!! I’m trying to save the rebels!! And the Royal Army!!! No one in this kingdom is to blame!!! Why must any of my people die!?” — Luffy retaliates (“THWAM!! THWAM!!”) and the two exchange head-knocks until Vivi breaks (“I have to!!! / I will never forgive that man!!! / I don’t care what it costs me!!!” p. 18). Luffy’s final commitment-line: “You can’t do it all by yourself!!! / We’re your friends, aren’t we!!!? Then let us help you!!!” (p. 18). Vivi collapses into tears.

Tony Tony Chopper (now visibly desert-wardrobed and operating with the crew, pp. 14-19) delivers the chapter’s emotional-empathy capstone: “Even princesses cry.” (p. 18). The crew, having watched the fight, sides with Luffy. Sanji’s verdict: “Sometimes he makes a lot of sense for an idiot. That’s Luffy.” (p. 15). Chopper’s tearful coda: “Tears… more than anyone, don’t you?” (p. 19). Chapter-end on Luffy’s commitment-line: “All right… So where do we find this Crocodile!!?” (p. 19).
