Summary

The chapter opens on a crisis aboard the Going Merry: Nami has fallen ill. Usopp and Luffy panic in close-up (“Is she, Vivi!!?” / “Is Nami gonna die!!!?”, p. 2). Vivi delivers the diagnosis — Nami’s condition is “a sickness caused by the extreme weather… one of the dangers you encounter upon entering the Grand Line… It’s probably the climate” (p. 2), and warns that “even the most notorious pirates who sail the seas… can suddenly get sick and die. It’s a common occurrence… Even a little cold can kill you if you’re not careful” (pp. 2-3). The crew asks “Isn’t there anyone on board who knows a little medicine?” (p. 3) — no one does.

Sanji steps up with the cook’s-role doctrine (pp. 3-5): he can “cook up something she can eat” and provide basic care, has been keeping Nami and Vivi on balanced meat-and-vegetable meals (“up to now, I’ve taken extra care… in the preparation of Nami and Vivi’s meals”, p. 4), and knows “there are all sorts of special foods… good for different diseases” — “as long as I’m the ship’s cook… you don’t have to worry about basic nutrition.” But he is blunt that this is not medicine: “But it won’t necessarily make her well… I don’t know what she’s got” (pp. 3-4). The thermometer reads 104 degrees and the fever is “getting worse” (p. 4). Luffy’s solution — “feed her all of ‘em” (all the special foods) — Sanji rejects (“That’s a good way to make a healthy person sick”).

Vivi confirms there is “sure to be a doctor in Alabasta” but it’s “at least a week” away (p. 5). When Luffy asks Zoro/Sanji if they’ve ever been sick, Zoro answers “Dunno, I’ve never been sick” and Luffy doesn’t know whether being sick even hurts — prompting Vivi’s exasperated “Are you people even human!!?” (p. 5). The crew panics: a 104 fever “could kill her!!!” and is “catastrophic!!” (p. 6).

Usopp finds Nami’s newspaper in her desk (p. 6); reading it on deck triggers a RUSTLE!!! shock-panel: 300,000 soldiers have defected from the Royal Army to the rebels (p. 8). Vivi explains the Alabasta troop balance — the Royal Army “used to have 600,000 men and the Rebel Army had 400,000” — the defection means “the violence in Alabasta will intensify… This changes everything!!!” (p. 8). Vivi admits the newspaper is three days old and that she hid it from Luffy deliberately: “letting you worry wouldn’t make the ship go faster… and I didn’t want you to worry, so I hid it from you” (p. 8). Luffy responds with maturity — “I’m glad to see you’re actually taking this seriously” — and notes he “get[s] the feeling it’s pretty bad” (p. 8).

The crew urges Nami to see a doctor (p. 9); she refuses (“I’m fine. That thermometer must be broken… We have to stick to the plan… and head straight for Alabasta”). Privately, Nami thanks the crew for worrying about her (p. 9). Vivi monologues the full stakes (pp. 10-13): if she does nothing, “the kingdom will be engulfed in a bloody war… of Alabasta!!! Crocodile will take over!” — “I’ve got to get home or a million of my people will kill each other in a senseless war… I don’t just have to get home alive, but as soon as possible!”

A feverish, dizzy Nami still tries to navigate (pp. 11-13) — she pushes the crew to turn the ship, insisting “This is my normal temperature!!”, while repeatedly sensing weather wrongness: “The air… is different…” (p. 11), “There’s a big wind coming… up ahead…” (p. 12), “It doesn’t… sound like the wind…” (p. 13). The crew physically overrules her and insists she rest.

Vivi gathers the whole crew and formally asks her favor (pp. 14-15): “Everyone, I need to ask a favor of you… I know this is selfish of me… but my country is in grave peril… There’s not a moment to spare!! So I want you to sail this ship at maximum speed… and head straight for Alabasta!!” The crew agrees at once — Sanji: “Of course! We promised you we would!!” Luffy reframes the plan into a single objective: “We need to get Nami well… if we want to get to Alabasta… so we can get there faster!” — getting Nami to a doctor becomes the fastest route to Alabasta. Luffy grins and promises the ship is going “absolutely!!” its top speed; Zoro tells Vivi “You’ve got a big heart” and Sanji says “Well said, Vivi!!!”

The chapter ends on the hazard Nami alone foresaw: an enormous cyclone rises off the bow (pp. 16-17, WOOO OOOOOO). The crew cries “It’s a cyclone!!!” / “It’s enormous!!!” / “N-Nami, hang on!!” — cliffhanger.
