400-year-ago Jaya (Noland flashback) — the Ancestor Trees and the felling-rift (Ch. 291)

• Ch. 291 (flashback, ~400 yrs ago): The Ancestor Trees are detailed as core Shandian belief — white holy trees that house the souls of ancestors dwelling on the island since the age of Shandora, “guided there by the sound of the bell,” protected as the Shandians protect their own lives (pp. 7-8). Noland’s felling of these trees (to stop tree fever) is the rift that fractured the Shandian/Noland alliance — resolved this chapter when Mousse relays Noland’s true motive to her father Calgara (pp. 12-14), who then rings the bell in the bell-ringing vow (pp. 16-19). 400-year-ago Jaya (Noland flashback) — the Shandian creed: guard the city and its poneglyph (Ch. 290)

• Ch. 290: The pre-fall Shandians’ creed is stated on-page by Calgara: as descendants of Shandora’s builders, they protect the city and its poneglyph (an unreadable inherited “stone” — “we can’t read what is written”), NOT the gold, as proof their ancestors “fought and lived”; they “respect our ancestors as we would gods” (page 9). The Giant Golden Bell is rung as a message — “We’re right here” — so ancestral souls “taken into heaven” can find their way home, and is named “the Light of Shandora” (pages 10–11). The friendship with Noland’s Blue-Sea crew then ruptures over the felling of the sacred forest (pages 16–19) — the on-page seed of the centuries-long grievance. 400-year-ago Jaya (Noland flashback) (Ch. 288)

• On their surface homeland Jaya, the Shandians worship a giant snake, Kashigami, as their god, and practice human sacrifice to placate it (“shed blood on the altar,” pp. 2, 5). Earthquakes are read as the god’s “wrath” / a “curse.”
• Led in battle by the great warrior Calgara; ruled by a chief who once heard “the voices of the gods” through the seer Pantori (now dead, pp. 12-13).
• The outsider explorer Mont Blanc Noland defies the sacrifice, duels Calgara, finds the curative Kona tree, and kills Kashigami — the inciting incident of the Noland legend and (eventually) the Shandian cause. See Shandora, The Noland Legend and the City of Gold.

Skypiea — Noland↔Calgara flashback: the plague, the serpent-god, and “Kami Killing” (Ch. 287)

• 400 years ago the Shandians of Jaya worshipped a giant tiger-striped serpent as a god, “the Great Kashigami,” and sacrificed their most beautiful maidens to it to lift a plague-curse (pages 5, 15-18).
• The plague (“Tree Fever,” per Mont Blanc Noland) was annihilating the village and its crops; even the High Priest Pantori and a warrior as great as Calgara were dying of it (pages 4-14).
• Noland’s killing of Kashigami to save the sacrifice — “Kami Killing” — is the founding misunderstanding between the Shandians and the foreigner who actually came to save them (pages 18-19). See Noland Kills The Serpent-God Kashigami To Save The Sacrifice.

Skypiea — Varse (Ch. 253)

• Their assault on the Kami’s temple is repelled by Enel’s Priests; Wyper orders the retreat and Kamakiri is downed (p2-3).
• At their camp they vow to attack again tomorrow and restore “Shandia… to the state it was 400 years ago” (p19) — explicitly tying the cause to a loss 400 years prior. The bagful of “Varse” (dirt) is revealed to be Aisa’s treasure, which Kamakiri was wounded protecting and Wyper had promised to collect (p18-19). See Shandora, The Noland Legend and the City of Gold.
