Summary

Two threads run in parallel. On the Going Merry, the Sky Knight (Gan Fall) — recovering aboard while Nami, Usopp, Sanji and Tony Tony Chopper sail the cloud current toward Upper Yard — recounts the 400-year history of the land: blue-sea items that rode the Knock-Up Stream were treasured as sacred “Varse” (Vearth); Upper Yard was the largest Varse ever to arrive and, unlike the others, was inhabited by the Shandians, whom the sky people drove off in greed, beginning a four-century war over the stolen homeland. He reveals that six years ago the tyrant Enel appeared from another sky island with his own army, conquered Upper Yard, and enslaved Gan Fall’s Heavenly Warriors; Enel rules by manufacturing guilt (“wayward lambs”) and brands even travelers as criminals. Meanwhile in the Upper Yard forest, the search team (Luffy, Nico Robin, Tony Tony Chopper) — Luffy with no sense of direction — is attacked by a giant, fast, venomous anaconda (“JURARARA!”). Robin holds it off with Cinco Fleurs, but the three are scattered. Each, separately, resolves to push on alone to the ruins; the chapter ends with Luffy alone in the jungle.

Notable panels

  • Page 1 — Title splash + cover: “Wapol’s Omnivorous Rampage, Vol. 17 — ‘The Town Scientist Searches for the Secret of Wapol’s Toys.’” A town scientist (Drum) examines a Wapol toy under a microscope; armored figure with backpack-rig and a boy in the workshop.
  • Page 2 — Opening directional gag: Luffy charges off the wrong way; Robin relays “It’s the ‘skull’s right eye,’ and right is this way” (echo of Noland’s gold-in-the-right-eye log).
  • Page 4 — First reveal of the giant anaconda’s gaping maw amid the canopy (“JURARA!”); tiny silhouettes of the search team at its feet establish scale.
  • Pages 7–8 — Gan Fall’s history montage: the Knock-Up Stream lofting blue-sea items into the clouds; the sky people revering “Varse.”
  • Page 12 — Gan Fall in shadow, “He is a tyrant,” beside the El Dorado / city-of-gold question; the Merry chugs along the cloud current below.
  • Page 17 — Robin’s Cinco Fleurs — five arms bloom to seize the anaconda’s jaws.
  • Page 19 (final) — Luffy alone in the jungle (“ZAAM!”), leaning on a stick, resolving to go ahead to the ruins. No Nika-like silhouette — standard composition. “To be continued in One Piece, Vol. 28!”
