Chapter 248: Former Kami vs. Vassal

Summary

The chapter opens at the Sky Knight’s hidden home, where a recovering Gan Fall hosts a convalescing Conis (and Pagaya/Su) over pumpkin juice, far from “Enel’s Mantra.” Asked about Skypiea’s history, he tells her that the island has always had fighting: a centuries-long war between the Sky People and the Shandian guerrillas that continues to this day. He confesses that when he was Kami over twenty years ago he tried to appease the Shandians and end hundreds of years of bloodshed — and was “so close to succeeding” when Enel stole his seat as Kami. He recounts an ancient legend: a beautiful “Song of the Island” rang out the day sacred Upper Yard was born, and the fighting began that day; he believes that the next time the Song of the Island sings, the war will end. Pierre’s alarmed cries (he hears the emergency whistle, blown last chapter) cut the reverie short and Gan Fall mounts up. Meanwhile at the Sacrificial Altar in Upper Yard, the new priest “Sky Rider” Shura — riding his giant bird Fuza and brandishing a burning spear — torments the captured Straw Hats, burning their ship and demanding they “offer your life to the almighty.” He explains the rules: Upper Yard’s four areas each belong to one of Enel’s four vassals, and while a target is in another vassal’s domain Shura can’t touch him — but the Sacrificial Altar is a “free area” where targets are fair game. Usopp tries to defend the group (“I won’t let you!!!!”) as Shura moves to kill, but the Sky Knight (Ganfor) arrives in answer to the whistle, parrying Shura’s spear: “There’s only room for one Kami on this island!!” — former Kami versus vassal. New reveals

• Gan Fall is the FORMER Kami of Skypiea. He tells Conis that “over 20 years ago, when I was still Kami, they came here,” and that “Enel stole my seat as Kami” (pp. 4-5). This is the first on-page confirmation that the Sky Knight once ruled Skypiea and was displaced by Enel — previously only strongly implied.
• Skypiea has “always had fighting.” A war between the Sky People and the Shandian guerrillas has run for centuries and continues to this day; the Shandians “continue to challenge Enel to this day” (pp. 4-6). First on-page framing of the Sky-People-vs-Shandian conflict.
• Gan Fall’s failed peace. As Kami he “sought to appease the Shandians” to “end hundreds of years of bloodshed and bring peace to our land at last,” and was “so close to succeeding” before Enel deposed him (pp. 5-6).
• The “Song of the Island” legend. “Many eons ago, on the day that sacred Upper Yard was born… a beautiful sound rang out from the island and enveloped the land,” and “it was on that day that the fighting between the Shandians and the Sky People began.” Gan Fall believes “the next time we hear the ‘Song of the Island’… the fighting will stop” (pp. 6-7). • New priest: “Sky Rider” Shura (caption “Skypiea Vassal ‘Sky Rider’ Shura,” p. 11) — a goggled, helmeted vassal who rides a giant bird/roc named Fuza (caption “Riding Roc Fuza,” p. 10) and fights with a burning spear (pp. 11-12). Second of Enel’s four priests shown after Satori.
• The four-vassal domain rule. “On this island are four areas, each ruled by a different vassal. When a target sets foot on one of the other vassals’ areas, the other vassals cannot touch him. That is the rule.” But the Sacrificial Altar “is not part of any domain… targets in this free area are considered fair game” (pp. 13-14). Formalizes the gauntlet geography.
