Chapter 245: Adventure on Kami's Island

Summary

The Straw Hats approach Upper Yard (“Kami’s Island,” Enel’s forbidden Godland) aboard their repaired-but-heavy boat. A vast, dense forest rises from the cloud-sea — a forest so big Robin reasons it must be ~1,000 years old (a 200-year-old map already shows nothing there), seeding the land’s deep antiquity. They enter through a river-mouth and immediately find themselves surrounded by ancient shipwrecks — the carcasses of past intruders. The river is alive with hazards: gear-bladed “sickle monsters,” then a giant blood-sucking sky lamprey (“they call it a Sky Lamprey… it’s a bloodsucker, and it’s huge”) that nearly devours the boat in the “Milky Road,” which Luffy clears with a Gum-Gum Bazooka. The current forks at a stone face into four entrances — a gate carved with four named trials: Challenge of the Swamp, Challenge of the Iron, Challenge of the String, Challenge of the Ball (“Is this Kami playing games with us?!”). Meanwhile, Zoro is snatched off a ledge by a Sky Shark and swallowed; he punches his way out and lands the group — Zoro, Robin, Nami, Chopper — on a stone sacrificial altar deep in the Upper Yard, the boat too badly damaged to sail. Robin “tingles all over” at the thousand-year-old relic and wants to explore for “history”; Nami sees only treasure (her eyes turn to “berry signs”). Zoro plans to find “this Kami guy” and have “a talk,” flatly declaring “I don’t pray to the Kami… so I don’t owe him anything.” The team rigs a vine to descend a 150-foot drop into the forest. Chopper is left to guard the boat — and, terrified, realizes “I’m in more danger than they are!!” as everyone bravely heads off into the forbidden forest.

• The entrance to Upper Yard is a forest river — the “Milky Road” — lined with ancient shipwrecks (pages 4, 6). The wrecks frame the holy land as a centuries-old trespasser graveyard.
• The Upper Yard forest is ~1,000 years old. Robin: “It’d take a thousand years for a forest to grow to that size… Whoever owned that map lived 200 years ago, right? It may have been an old map even then… but nothing like this” (pages 2–3). This ties Upper Yard to the deep-historical (Void-Century-adjacent) past.
• Four named Ordeals are carved on the entry gate: Challenge of the Swamp, Challenge of the Iron, Challenge of the String, Challenge of the Ball (page 9). This is the entry-gauntlet structure of Enel’s regime — “Does that mean we can go through whichever one we want?! Is this Kami playing games with us?!”
• The river holds “Sky Sharks” and a giant “Sky Lamprey” bloodsucker (pages 8, 10–13). A Sky Shark swallows Zoro whole; he punches out from inside.
• There is a “sacrificial altar” in the Upper Yard, “a thousand years old,” bearing a historical relic (pages 12–13, 15). Robin physically reacts to it — “I tingle all over when I come across a historical relic like this” — and resolves to look for “history.”
• Zoro rejects Enel’s divinity outright: “I don’t pray to the Kami… so I don’t owe him anything” (page 14).
• The crew splits at the altar. The boat is “too badly damaged for us to sail out of here.” Luffy/Sanji/Usopp continue ahead by boat; Zoro/Robin/Nami descend into the forest; Chopper guards the boat alone (pages 13, 17).
