Chapter 243: Trial

Summary

Back at Conis and Pagaya’s place, the Straw Hats process the trap they walked into: “‘You may pass.’ But when we did, we became trespassers?!” — they were tricked, and are now branded “Class-2 criminals.” Luffy, unbothered (“We’re used to being hunted… Hee hee hee”), refuses to leave the sky before he’s had his “adventure” in the forbidden Upper Yard, while Nami insists they flee. Conis explains there is a way back down to the Blue Sea — descend one level and sail to the far east of the White Sea to a place called “Cloud’s End,” a vast sea in the sky — but warns escaping that way is dangerous and inadvisable (pages 2–5). Nami decides to sail immediately; the crew thanks Conis and Pagaya, who agree to supply spare parts and repair the Merry, and Sanji packs bento boxes (including a “Love Is a Dilemma: Falling for an Angel” box for Conis) (pages 5–8). Mid-meal, Usopp senses a ruckus on the ship; out on deck, the Going Merry begins moving on its own, dragged backward across the cloud-sea (pages 9–10). The cause: a colossal, ornate “Special Lobster Express” — a famous inhabitant of the White-White Sea, marked “GOD” — has hooked the ship and is hauling it, with Nami, Robin, Sanji, Usopp and Chopper still aboard, toward the Upper Yard, while “gigantic sky fish” snap at the hull to prevent anyone abandoning ship (pages 11–13). Luffy and Zoro are left behind on Angel Island. Pagaya — visibly conflicted — reveals the grim mechanics: the Lobster Express is “one of the Kami’s servants,” and everything it carries off becomes an offering to the Kami at the Sacrificial Altar to the north-east of the Upper Yard. Criminals are subject to “Heaven’s Punishment”: they “either become sacrificial offerings… or they undergo a challenge,” and until then are held as the Kami’s hostages (pages 14–15). Conis produces “a map of Skypiea I just happen to have” (heavy with the unspoken weight of her coerced complicity), and lays out the route: the altar can only be reached by following the Milky Road — a forest cloud-river network of “several hundred” channels, teeming with man-eating fish, patrolled by the Kami’s vassals (page 16). Luffy and the others resolve to chase down their friends and “clobber those guys”; Pagaya warns that “the Kami’s four vassals are unimaginably strong.” The chapter closes on the looming, shadowed face of the god — “And above them in the Upper Yard… Kami Eneru awaits” — and an off-panel “KABOOM!!” (a startled gag explosion) that “evens the odds a little” before Luffy charges off (pages 17–18).

New reveals

• Conis’s forced betrayal. Conis summons the Lobster Express that drags the Merry to the Upper Yard. Her complicity is signposted obliquely: she “put her t-shirt on” and notably did not drop the ladder for the others (pages 7, 9–10, 13), then “just happens to have a map of Skypiea” ready (page 15). The chapter frames her as visibly tormented — coerced, not malicious.
• The “Special Lobster Express.” A giant ornate lobster, “a famous inhabitant of the White-White Sea,” with the word “GOD” stamped on its head; it is “one of the Kami’s servants,” and “everything it carries off becomes an offering to the Kami” (pages 11–14).
• The Sacrificial Altar. Offerings are taken “to the sacrificial altar,” located to the north-east of the Upper Yard (page 14, mapped page 16). It “cannot be reached on foot, even from the nearby coast” — only via the Milky Road (page 16).
• “Heaven’s Punishment” / the Survival-Game seed. Pagaya: criminals “either become sacrificial offerings… or they undergo a challenge”; “‘sacrificial offerings’ means… they’re in the Kami’s power now… hostages” (pages 15–16). This is the first on-page statement of the arc’s central game mechanic: be sacrificed, or face a trial.
• The Kami’s “four vassals” — first explicit count. “The Kami’s four vassals are unimaginably strong” (page 17). Earlier chapters implied “four” via the head-splitting bounty math (Ch. 241); here the four Priests are named as a unit for the first time.
• The Milky Road network’s scale and danger. “There are several hundred Milky Roads in all”; “it’s teeming with man-eating fish” (gigantic sky fish), and “the Kami’s vassals” patrol them (page 16).
• “Cloud’s End” — the route home. “There is a way down to the Blue Sea… go down one level and sail to the far east of the White Sea… to a place known as Cloud’s End” — a “vast sea in the sky” (pages 4–5). Escaping via this route is explicitly called inadvisable/dangerous.
• The god is named “Eneru” (Enel). The final caption names him “Kami Eneru” who “awaits” in the Upper Yard (page 17). (Per the established batch convention, the Character note is [[Characters/Enel]].)
• “Class-2 criminals.” The Straw Hats’ legal status under Skypiea’s regime is specified: “Now that you’ve been branded Class-2 criminals, there’s no way we can help you” (page 2).
