What we know

• Ch. 297 (pp. 5–8): The Vearth is shown un-sinkable. As Enel bombards Upper Yard, observers note it “isn’t budging an inch” / “isn’t sinking!!” and marvel “Varse is truly miraculous!!” (pp. 7–8). Wyper frames the Vearth as inseparable from “the history of the proud warriors who lived in the land of Shandora” — a land/heritage that cannot be toppled (pp. 5–6). Enel himself recants the war’s premise: “We never had the right to claim ownership of it… why could we not see that truth for the last 400 years?” (p. 8). The chapter title — “Praise of the Earth” — canonizes the Vearth theme as the arc’s emotional center. See Wyper, Enel, Sky People and Shandian War.
• Ch. 255 (pp. 7–8): First on-page naming of the sacred-soil/relic concept underpinning Skypiean culture. Gan Fall explains that items from the Blue Sea occasionally ride the Knock-Up Stream into the clouds; the sky people, having no real land of their own, revere these as miracles called Varse.
• Ch. 255: Upper Yard is the largest Varse ever to arrive — and the only one that was inhabited (by the Shandians), which is why greed over it started the 400-year Sky-People/Shandian war.
• Ch. 253: Gan Fall first articulates the longing-for-earth theme by naming the campfire dance “Varse” — to sky-dwellers it “embodies our eternal hopes,” because greenery/soil cannot be born in the sky, only on island clouds (cross-link only; not the lore-naming chapter).
• Ch. 256: First chapter to frame the Vearth explicitly as the contested prize of the 400-year Shandian↔Skypiean war (not merely “the holy land”). Gan Fall tells Wyper the Skypieans cannot give it up: “We Skypieans have come to rely on the power of the Varse in Upper Yard. Its presence is a blessing to our people. We simply cannot take it from those who are blameless” (p. 3). The Shandians regard it as stolen ancestral land. A bombarded chunk of it is called “Aisa’s treasure” (p. 7) — Vearth treated as a coveted, scarce relic worth fighting and dying for. • Ch. 274 (pp. 9–11, 18): The “Endless Varse” / Fairy Vearth destination is named. Enel names a boundless version of the sacred-soil concept as his destination — “Endless Varse” (VIZ; = Endless Vearth / Fairy Vearth) — “a land that is worthy of me… the paradise I seek,” stretching “farther than the eye can see.” He means to abandon Skypiea (dropping it into the Blue Sea), depart with a chosen few aboard his ark Maxim, and found a new “Godland” there. The “endless land beyond the sky” framing is the seed for the eventual Moon / lunar-civilization (Birka) reveal — tracked as forward-canon foreshadowing (see Open questions). (“Endless Varse”/“Fairy Vearth” merges into THIS note — “Vearth” and “Varse” are the same concept; first_established stays Ch. 255.)

• Ch. 275 (pp. 7–8): “Endless Vearth” restated as Enel’s destination. Mid-fight with Wyper, Enel declares “As I told you, we’ll now be shipping out to endless Vearth together” — the boundless-land goal the Shandians scorn as his “World of Dreams.” Reinforces the Ch. 274 “Endless Varse” naming; the unbounded “endless Vearth” framing keeps building toward the eventual Fairy Vearth / Moon destination. (“Endless Vearth” merges into THIS note — same concept; first_established stays Ch. 255.)

• Ch. 277 (pp. 5–7): “Endless Varse” named aboard the revealed ark — the destination welded to the Maxim. Enel reveals the flying ark Maxim to a captive Nami and declares that in it “we can travel to ENDLESS VARSE!!” (p. 7). He states the island’s hidden gold is what makes the Maxim “come in handy” / work (p. 5) — explicitly tying the City-of-Gold treasure to the vehicle that carries him to Vearth. Etymology

• JP (confirmed): written 大地 (“the great earth / land”) but read with the coined katakana ヴァース Vāsu. The word literally means “earth/ground” — Oda supplies a sky-people pronunciation over the ordinary kanji for land.
• Localizations: VIZ renders the reading “Varse”; the standard/common spelling is “Vearth,” which surfaces the “V + earth” portmanteau an English reader hears. Same word.
• Why it’s holy: a cloud-world has no true land, so any Blue-Sea soil or landmass (the largest being Upper Yard) is revered as miraculous Vearth.
• ⭐ Name-encoded reveal: the boundless variant “Fairy Vearth” / “Endless Varse” is the destination Enel names (Ch. 274, Ch. 277) — “a land beyond the sky… farther than the eye can see.” It pays off far later as the MOON — specifically Birka, the lunar civilization the Shandia (and Skypieans) descend from. Note the loop with Shandora: Shandora ← Sanskrit Chandra “moon”; Enel’s “endless Vearth” sends him toward that same lunar homeland. Why it matters

This seed explains why a literal piece of ground is holy in Skypiea: a cloud-world has no true earth, so the rare blue-sea landmasses lofted up by the Knock-Up Stream become objects of worship. It sets up the Vearth lore the Shandians and Skypieans ultimately reconcile over and underwrites the City-of-Gold geography (Jaya’s risen half = the largest Varse = Upper Yard).

Chronology / structure

Blue Sea (real ground) → Knock-Up Stream lofts a fragment skyward → sky people revere it as Varse → the largest such arrival, Upper Yard, was inhabited → greed over it begins the 400-year war.

Open questions about this topic

• “Fairy Vearth” / “Endless Varse” — Ch. 274 names Enel’s destination by this term (the Moon seed; 277 reiterates). Tracked as a far-future foreshadowing payoff via Fairy Vearth Name Encodes The Moon Destination (name-etymology) and Enels Ark Maxim Will Destroy Skypiea And Leave For The Sky (the ark side); merge later references into this note as they arrive.
