  • Bon Clay stayed behind inside Impel Down and used the Mane Mane no Mi to impersonate Warden Magellan, ordering the Gates of Justice opened from the 1st-floor control room so the escapees' warship could pass through (pp. 9-14).
  • Gate mechanic: the Gates of Justice 'will never open for you scalawags' — they open only for Marine warships, can only be opened from the control panel in Impel Down's 1st-floor control room, and close right after a ship passes through (pp. 5, 7, 9-10, 17).
  • Bon Clay coordinated with Jinbe via a short-range mini (baby) Den Den Mushi and made Jinbe promise not to tell Luffy he was staying behind until the gate severed the connection (pp. 13-15).
  • 241 prisoners succeeded in escaping Impel Down — 'the worst disgrace in the prison's history' — and only four hours remain until the public execution of Portgaz D. Ace (p. 19).

Summary

The Impel Down escapees reach the commandeered Marine warship and celebrate as Jinbe (“Sharky”) helms it calmly toward the towering Gates of Justice, while Buggy commands the prisoners to return the surrounding fleet’s fire. With the gate looming as a dead end and the Marine fleet shelling them, the Gates of Justice unexpectedly begin to open — because, back inside Impel Down, Bon Clay has disguised himself as Magellan with the Mane Mane no Mi and ordered the 1st-floor control room to open them. Through a short-range mini Den Den Mushi, Bon Clay reveals to Luffy that he stayed behind so the others could escape — repeating his Alabasta sacrifice (“It’s just like the last time!”). The grateful, weeping prisoners shout their thanks as the ship clears the gate and the connection is cut; Bon Clay, surrounded by the real, poisoned Magellan and the guards, dances his okama swan-pose and offers his last words (“May we meet again… as soon as possible”). Narration closes: 241 prisoners have escaped, the prison’s worst disgrace, with only four hours left until Ace’s execution.
