Chapter 624: Queen Otohime

Summary

A flashback into Fish-Man Island’s recent past. After Fisher Tiger’s death, the truth is laid bare: Tiger had been a slave, and he died because he refused a human blood transfusion out of hatred — a truth Arlong buried by lying to the Navy to protect Tiger’s reputation. Jimbei now leads the Sun Pirates (“the first son of the sea”), rated the Navy’s most dangerous; he is offered a seat among the Seven Warlords (bounty 250 million) and considers accepting because the pardon it brings would let unwilling pirates like Aladdin live in peace and pull fish-men closer to the World Government — aiding Queen Otohime’s cause. Otohime, meanwhile, struggles to realize her dream of fish-men emigrating to the surface to “live under the sun”: her five-year petition gathers barely a thousand signatures from a population of five million, and the signers then withdraw. Worn down, she breaks down and drunkenly broadcasts a plea across the whole kingdom, begging her people to gather their courage. Jimbei’s acceptance of the Warlord seat triggers Arlong’s release; Arlong calls him the human government’s dog, restarts the Arlong Pirates, takes his men, and fights Jimbei before sailing off — and the Sun Pirates fracture into three factions. The chapter ends as a giant wrecked ship carrying a Celestial Dragon requests emergency entry to Fish-Man Island, and Otohime rushes to the docks.
