The seed

Among the day’s impossible events the crew lists “A falling galleon” (p. 17): a full ship dropped from the sky onto the sea. Paired with the skyward Log Pose needle, this establishes — by negative space, before any sky island is shown — that there is an active world overhead from which ships can fall.

The payoff

Why this matters

Negative-space foreshadowing: the existence of the sky world is implied by its debris before it is ever shown. A ship can only fall from somewhere; the galleon is the physical evidence that “somewhere” is overhead.
