Etymology

Bellamy is named for the real 18th-century English pirate Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy (1689–1717) — confirmed by Oda in the SBS of Volume 25, and restated on-page in the Ch. 0230 author column. The historical Bellamy captained the Whydah Gally and is often called the wealthiest pirate of the Golden Age; he drowned at 28 and was famous as a great orator who loved an audience (“the Robin Hood of pirates”). Oda’s own gloss: the manga Bellamy is nicknamed “the Hyena,” but is “maybe more like a lion than a hyena because he loved an audience” — pinning the character to Black Sam’s theatrical, crowd-pleasing reputation. The “Hyena” epithet itself (a laughing scavenger that steals other predators’ kills) encodes his stated doctrine that it is “so much more rewarding to steal someone’s treasure when they’ve suffered a lot to get it” (Ch. 0230, p. 20).
