Chapter 231: Bellamy the Hyena

Summary

In the jungle of Jaya, Luffy’s group (Luffy, Sanji, Nami, Usopp) is swarmed by giant insects — a mantis, ladybugs, hornets, grasshoppers — all being commanded by the South Bird they are trying to catch, and are forced to flee (pp. 2–7, 15). The chapter cuts to the beach at Cactus Crag (the Jaya cape fronting Cricket’s house — a different place from the Whisky Peak / Cactus Island landmark of Ch. 111), where Bellamy the Hyena and his crew (led under-officer Sarquiss) have raided Montblanc Cricket’s home: they mock the salvaged gold and the legend of the City of Gold, then beat down the brothers Masira and Shoujou despite Shoujou’s “Havoc Sonar” and Masira’s strength (pp. 8–13). Bellamy reveals his Devil Fruit power — the Bane Bane no Mi (“Boing-Boing Fruit”) — turning his legs into springs to strike from above (“Spring… Snipe!!”), and loads up the stolen gold, jeering that “dreams never come true” and that Noland’s El Dorado was a fantasy (pp. 11–13). The Straw Hats return to find Cricket’s house wrecked, the Going Merry under attack, and the two ape-brothers broken on the sand; Cricket insists the gold doesn’t matter and that they must still reach the sky before sunrise (pp. 16–18). Enraged that Bellamy beat the dreams out of people who dived ten years for that gold, Luffy resolves to go back to Mock Town. Zoro tosses him a sword to take, and Luffy declares he’ll “be back by sunrise” (pp. 18–19).
