Chapter 782: Champion of Evil

Summary

On the Dressrosa plateau, Luffy charges Doflamingo and their wills collide in “a collision of Supreme King Haki” that knocks out every weak-willed onlooker — confirming Luffy carries Conqueror’s Haki, which Doflamingo reads as proof he “was chosen by the heavens” and has “the quality of a King.” Doflamingo and Luffy trade blows (Gum-Gum Bazooka vs Doflamingo’s string “Athlete”), until Trebol glues Luffy in place to protect the downed Trafalgar Law. Luffy’s Armament-Haki punches pass harmlessly through Trebol, prompting Trebol’s long boast: ~30 years ago he and the other founding supreme officers discovered young Doflamingo’s “limitless talent from heaven” — after the boy killed his own father, brought the head to Sacred Marijoa, and barely survived — and they raised and “shaped him into the Champion of Evil,” indulging his cruelty and crowning him their king in exchange for their dreams. Doflamingo, contemptuous, says the only reason he didn’t take “the throne” was to avoid being associated with “these idiots.” Trebol, enraged at the insult, tries to skewer Law; Law deploys his Room and launches a sword (Takt / Sterben Blade) that pierces and bleeds Trebol — exposing Trebol’s true form, a scrawny little man buried inside his own sticky mucus, which is why Luffy’s punches never landed. Cornered, Trebol moves to self-immolate (his stick-stick is flammable) to take Luffy and Law down with him. Meanwhile at the SMILE Factory, Leo and the Tontatta are mysteriously drawn toward the town, feeling “a weight lifting from my chest.” Cover: Jinbe’s solitary journey, Vol. 26.
