Yamato fells Ulti to save Luffy on sight, declaring he has “been waiting for [him] a very long time” (Ch. 983 ).
Years earlier, Ace came to Wano, befriended the chained child Yamato, and lit his drive to escape Kaido and “live as free as Oden did” (Ch. 999 ).
The root is settled on-page: Ace told Yamato about his little brother Luffy and gave him a piece of his Vivre Card; combined with Oden’s journal naming Luffy the man Oden waited for, Yamato’s stance is inheritance of Oden’s and Ace’s wills (Ch. 1000 ).
The debt runs back to Yamato’s childhood in the sacred cave, where captured samurai who loved Oden fed the starving child, named him a samurai, and gave him Oden’s voyage journal (Ch. 1024 ).

Ch. 1050 pp. 11-12 — Yamato stands with the alliance against the holdout Beasts Pirates
After Kaido ’s defeat, Yamato stands with the alliance and confronts the holdout Beasts Pirates (“Stand down, Animal Kingdom Pirates!! …I will destroy you!!”). He is explicitly credited by his father’s crew as “our leader” who kept Onigashima from crashing — fully committed against the Beasts Pirates rather than to them.
Ch. 1049 — Yamato’s Joy Boy fixation predates the raid
In flashback, “Yamato dropped Joyboy’s name” to Kaido , who wonders “where that kid heard it” (p.6) — confirming Yamato’s early fixation on the Joy Boy / Oden legend predates the raid, context for Yamato siding with Luffy .
Ch. 1045 — Yamato vouches for the awakened Luffy
Yamato remains firmly on Luffy ’s side as an observer of the Gear-5 fight, vouching that the white-haired figure really is Luffy and reacting with awe rather than alarm (pp. 6, 15) — continued allegiance to Luffy’s cause against Kaido .
Ch. 1040 p. 15 — Yamato saves Onigashima from a chain-detonation
Yamato reveals he encased the armory’s explosives in ice so only a single bomb went off, “so we avoided the armory exploding all at once.” Yamato continues to act to protect Wano and Onigashima’s people during the raid — further evidence of his alignment with Luffy’s side against Kaido.
Yamato races to the castle-basement armory (“Please be in time!!”) with “Namuji Glacier Fang” to stop the spreading Kazenbo flames from igniting the gunpowder and detonating Onigashima — again prioritizing the protection of Wano / the Flower Capital over himself, consistent with carrying Oden’s will against his father’s plan.

Ch. 1030 — Yamato races to stop the island-drop catastrophe
Yamato (wolf-beast form) charges to “the armory on the bottom floor of the castle basement” and tells Momonosuke to “do whatever you can to slow the island’s descent” (p. 12) — actively working to keep Onigashima from crushing the Flower Capital , i.e. siding fully with the Kozuki cause against his father’s plan.
Yamato actively protects the alliance’s cause: rejoins Momonosuke , teaches him to fly to save Wano, and overrides the suggestion to stop Luffy — insisting Luffy must keep fighting Kaido even uninformed (“No one but Luffy can beat Kaido!! We can’t tell him about this!!!”, p. 11). Further evidence Yamato has thrown in wholly with Luffy/Wano against Kaido.
Yamato fights Kaido one-on-one to hold him back (ice strike “Hallowed Glacier Slash”), and the moment Luffy crash-lands back on the roof Luffy thanks her openly — “You were holding Kaido back for us?!” — and they hit Kaido together (“White Serpent” + Luffy’s “Jet Culverin”). Kaido attacks her resolve by recounting her isolated childhood: caged as the “Ogre Princess,” with everyone kind to her killed (the samurai in the cave; a boy who snuck her food while “wanting to be Oden,” executed), insisting “you cannot escape your bloodline… you are still the son of Kaido” and “friendship is a sham.” Yamato’s aid to Luffy is now explicitly mutual on-page.
The deepest root of Yamato’s allegiance. Flashback: as a chained, starving child, Yamato was locked by Kaido in a “sacred cave” with captured Wano swordsmen, given swords and a single meal “enough for one” to force a fight to the death — Kaido secretly meaning them all to starve. The samurai (led by So-and-So ) refused to fight, fed the child, named her a samurai, and gave her Oden ’s voyage journal“people who accept me… people who believe in me” (p. 16). Kaido offers Yamato the role of Wano’s guardian deity (via the Okuchi-no-Makami wolf fruit) and rule over Wano-as-weapons-factory; Yamato flatly refuses — “I will free them!! I will liberate this country and its samurai…” — and fights him. Reaffirms Yamato’s motive: inherit Oden’s will and liberate , not rule, Wano (pp.2–4).
On the Rooftop Yamato re-affirms her motive as inheriting Oden’s will: “If I don’t fight for the sake of this country… then I can’t call myself… ODEN!!! ” (pp. 18–19). Reveals she was bound to Onigashima not only by explosive cuffs but by the Devil Fruit she ate out of hunger , which cost her the ability to swim (p. 18) — deepening why she cannot simply leave and instead fights alongside Luffy ’s alliance against Kaido .
Yamato chooses to fight Kaido and hold him back rather than accept the Shogunate, declaring “I’m going out to sea with Luffy!!!” and citing Oden’s prophecy that “Luffy is the man Kozuki Oden was waiting for.” Yamato’s aid to Luffy is framed as inheriting Oden’s will and buying time until Luffy returns (pp. 14–15).
Yamato drops in at Kaido ’s position declaring she has come “to cut those chains!!!” ; Kaido sneers ”…I think you mean Father .” The chapter’s title, “Chains,” ties this to Kaido’s parallel demand (p. 10) that Momonosuke also call him “Father.” Yamato openly moves to obstruct Kaido, but her full motive is still unstated.

Ch. 999 pp. 3–9 — the root of Yamato’s rebellion: Ace’s visit
Yamato narrates how, years before Luffy arrived, Ace came to Wano to “take Kaido’s head,” befriended the chained child Yamato, and urged “Why do you let him chain your heart too?” Yamato smashed Kaido ’s dragon statue crying “I want to live as free as Oden did!!!” Ace lit Yamato’s drive to escape Kaido and “become Oden” — the same will Luffy now reawakens. Kaido’s son Yamato fells the Tobi Roppo Ulti with Kaido’s own “Thunder Bagua” to save Luffy , says he has “been waiting for [him] a very long time,” and professes “I mean you no harm.” His motive for siding against his father’s crew is unstated this chapter.
