Whale Forest

Profile

A region of Zou, territory of the Mink Tribe — the Forbidden Forest, dominated by an enormous tree and protected by the Whale Forest Guardians. Named in Ch. 804 (p. 17) when the dog-mink musketeer warns that “the Whale Forest has been infiltrated!!”; first shown on-page Ch. 805 when Luffy’s infiltration sparks a brawl with the guardians.

Etymology

Whale Forest (くじらの森, Kujira no Mori) = literally “Whale Forest” — a descriptive toponym for the colossal whale-shaped great tree (the “Whale Tree,” later revealed as the Guardians’ Dwelling) that dominates it (Ch. 804 p. 10–11; the tree itself shown Ch. 814). Its alias “Forbidden Forest” reflects its status as the protected domain of the King of the Night, the Cat Viper. Pure descriptive naming — no deeper pun.

• Ch. 809 — established that the Cat Viper has guarded this forest “over the generations,” and therefore holds authority equal to the official sovereign Duke Dogstorm (p. 5) — the basis of Zou’s two-king (Day/Night) rule.

• Ch. 811 — named again as the King of the Night (Cat Viper)‘s domain — the “forest below” where Choppermon performs his examinations and the night counterpart to Duke Dogstorm’s day-realm (p. 16). Wanda and the Kingsbird Carrot set out by night to lead Luffy and Brook here to meet the Cat Viper. See The Two Kings of Zou.

• Ch. 814 — the Guardians’ Dwelling beneath a giant whale-shaped tree (the “Whale Tree”) is shown — itself wrecked by Jack’s attack — and named the home base of the Whale Forest Guardians, led by Treetop Pedro (Jaguar Mink), who treated the crew as intruders until recognized. Reaffirmed as the night-side domain of the Cat Viper, King of the Night; the Heart Pirates (Bepo’s group) and the recovering Pekoms shelter here (pp. 10–16).

• Ch. 816 — named again as a district of the Mokomo Dukedom; the hidden Straw Hat group shelters here while the dukes’ clash and the Raizo reveal play out in Kurau City (p. 3, 5).
