Ch. 37 — page 20 (volume-bonus “One Piece Character Sketches!” — second instance of the paratext-foreshadowing pattern; Ganzak preview)

Ch 37 page 20 is a “One Piece Character Sketches!” page showing Ganzak (an armored character with what appears to be a large weapon/cannon — not yet seen in canon) and “The Mark of the Crab” annotation next to a separate design. Second on-page instance of Oda using the volume-bonus pages as a forward-canon character-preview channel — after the Ch 11 Mohji sketch (which previewed Mohji’s beast-tamer debut in Chs 12-13) and the Ch 23 Rough Sketch expansion (Cabaji + scrapped designs).

The Ch 37 instance confirms the pattern as a recurring device: the volume-bonus pages are not one-off filler, they are a systematic forward-canon preview channel. The pattern is now doubly-confirmed-on-pattern-recurrence: Mohji previewed in Ch 11, payoff in Ch 12-13; Ganzak previewed in Ch 37, payoff in subsequent chapters (or possibly in adjacent canon — Ganzak the Iron Mask is a known anime-original movie-2 antagonist; confirm whether this is the same design once later chapters / SBS clarify).

The Ganzak preview is unrelated to the Syrup Village arc’s A-plot (Kuro/Black Cat Pirates) — the volume-bonus channel is not arc-coupled; it can preview characters from arcs after the current arc as well as supplementary characters from the current arc. This expands the pattern: the volume-bonus paratext-foreshadowing channel has no temporal lock to the chapter’s A-plot.

Companion observation on the Mark of the Crab annotation: a separate design on the same page is annotated “The Mark of the Crab” — possibly a scrapped design (per the Ch 23 Rough Sketch archive-function reading), possibly a forward-canon preview of a crab-themed character. Track forward. Note: the crab motif recurs at multiple later turns (Sentomaru’s gigantification, various background fauna across Grand Line) — if a crab-themed major character debuts in subsequent chapters, the Ch 37 paratext is the predictive seed.

Why it matters

This is, structurally, the first time Oda uses paratext (volume-bonus material) to trail an upcoming on-page character. The pattern recurs throughout the series: SBS columns introduce future characters’ details, volume covers preview Cipher Pol / Baroque Works members, etc.

Reading rule: the volume-bonus and SBS material is its own foreshadowing channel. Scan it; don’t skip it.
