Chapter 16: Versus Buggy's Crew!

Summary

The chapter opens on a triptych title page that functions as Buggy’s officer chart: First Mate (Mohji, mid-blast atop his lion), Captain (Buggy, dagger in hand), Second Mate (Cabaji, silhouetted on his unicycle). The chart visually pre-loads the rest of the chapter, which works through the officers in order. In the streets of Orange Town, Luffy stands over the wreckage of his prior-chapter win against Mohji + Richie while Nami and a small local civilian gawk at his rubber body. A wave of Buggy Pirates mooks arrives shielded by Mohji and Richie — Buggy is finally on-scene. Mohji explains to Buggy in plain dialogue that Luffy is a Devil Fruit user “just like you”, a rubber man — the chapter’s lore beat: Buggy learns Luffy’s DF class on-page. Luffy charges, knocks Mohji aside, and is intercepted by Cabaji, the unicycle-riding Second Mate, who introduces himself as a fellow swordsman before Zoro steps in to take the duel. Cabaji exploits Zoro’s still-bleeding Ch. 15 wound — kicks it, throws dust in his eyes, slashes him across the back — and Nami breaks character to demand Luffy intervene. Zoro doesn’t tag out. Instead, in the chapter’s structural pivot, Zoro cuts himself across the stomach with his own katana and declares: “My goal is to be the world’s greatest swordsman… Is that enough of a handicap for you?” — biting his third sword between his teeth as the three-sword stance returns. The chapter ends mid-duel with Zoro now actively enforcing the hara-kiri pact’s terms on his own body: the wound is no longer a vulnerability Cabaji can exploit because Zoro has priced it in. • Richie — Mohji’s lion, named on-page (Buggy p. 5: “Cabaji! What’re you doing to Richie!?”). Mohji’s mount and his shield-in-defeat (“I was using him as a shield. • Buggy retroactively connects Mohji’s Buggy-Ball failure to Luffy’s rubber body (p. 6, Mohji: “That’s why my Buggy Ball bounced off of him!!”) — the “bullets can’t hurt me” gag from Ch. 5 applied to Buggy’s signature ordnance. Buggy Balls confirmed as non-effective vs. rubber.
• Zoro’s self-wound-as-handicap beat (p. 16, full-page SLISH! panel) — Zoro cuts himself across his own stomach with his katana, declares his swordsman ambition (“My goal is to be the world’s greatest swordsman…”), and asks Cabaji “Is that enough of a handicap for you?” This is the first on-page enactment of the pact-renewal mechanic: when offered a way to dim his ambition (rest, tag out, lose with the wound as excuse), Zoro doubles the price instead. • Three-sword stance returns (p. 17 — DA-DOOM panel) — Zoro bites his third sword into his teeth; first on-page return of the Santoryu silhouette since its establishing panel in Ch. 6 (p. 23). The stance is summoned specifically to upgrade-after-self-handicap.
• Nami’s first crew-style intervention (p. 14): “How can you just stand there and watch your friend get killed!? Zolo’s hurt bad!” — Nami is not yet crew, but she calls Zoro “your friend” to Luffy and demands captain-intervention. First moment Nami emotionally treats Luffy and Zoro as a unit she’s invested in.

Note Cabaji is silhouetted-on-unicycle in his label-panel — Oda introduces him as silhouette-with-prop before the in-panel name-drop on p. 5/p. 8. Standard Oda name-before-face technique applied at the chapter-page level, not the chapter-to-chapter level.

• Page 8 (Cabaji’s caption frame) — “Buggy’s second mate, Cabaji the Acrobat!!” — Cabaji on unicycle, swords up, frame composed as a circus-poster panel. The composition reads as a playbill — Oda’s commitment to crew-as-circus.

Nami’s reaction panel (“That’s dirty!”) frames the moment as a moral-grade-down — Cabaji’s “honor” of p. 9 is rescinded by the wound-kick of p. 11 in the same chapter.
