Chapter 60: Resolution

Summary

The chapter opens with the Buggy cover splash (page 1, Part 19: “Complete!! Ritchie’s Pirate Crew”) — Ritchie the lion (Mohji’s pet, last seen Orange Town arc) roaring with a tiny Buggy-skull flag in one hand, wearing Buggy’s captain-cape, with Buggy’s head in a thought bubble overhead. Below him: clam, cat-creatures, small companions — the crew Buggy assembled during the survival cover-story has been rebadged as Ritchie’s crew, with Buggy reduced to imagined-captain status. The 19-part Buggy survival-saga’s emotional payoff: the captain who lost his crew has been replaced as captain by the crew’s most prominent member.

The chapter proper opens on the Baratie deck (page 2). Sanji faces Gin — distant cooks watching from the doorway. Gin: “Sanji, I hoped you’d get off this ship without getting hurt. But I guess that’s not going to happen. No, I’m afraid not. Then the best I can offer you… is to kill you myself.” Sanji lights a cigarette (SHWHK): “-Sigh-… Thank you. … Eat worms.” The two characters who were mutually defined by Ch. 44’s silent-feeding-of-Gin are now locked into combat — both apologizing for the imminent fight (page 2, panel 2: Gin’s “best I can offer” / Sanji’s “Thank you”). The chapter’s emotional core lands in three lines.

Luffy meanwhile is across the deck arguing with Pearl (round shield-armor and gohei-style staff with metal pearls dangling — the Krieg-Pirates’ battle commander). Pearl: “How come? I can’t lose to a bunch of wimps like you!” Zoro (still wounded from Mihawk, bandage on head): “You should have left with your mates. You, too, Straw Hat.” The Krieg crew chorus-rage: “We’re Krieg’s pirates, the toughest marauders in the East Blue!!!” Sanji’s running commentary (page 3, panel 5): “These blokes are getting sassy-mouthed with our battle commander…” — Pearl is named in-role: battle commander of the Krieg Pirates. Pearl (page 4, KA-TANK!!): “Hmph, you’re not tough, there’s just so many of you!” Luffy: “‘Cause it’s true.” Sanji (twitching): “You hit them where it hurts.” Pearl: “IDIOT!” The Krieg crew threatens massacre — “We’ll kill ‘em to death!!! We’re gonna massacre these cooks now!!” (page 5). Pearl tries to discipline them: “STAND DOWN!!! Only shows that you acknowledge your weakness. Getting all worked up over being called wimps…” — interrupted by Don Krieg’s arrival (page 5, THOOK!!).

Krieg looms in close-up (page 6, DOOM!): “Don Krieg’s here, so you can quit screaming. The outcome will tell us who’s strong and who’s weak.” His crew snaps to attention: “DON KRIEG!! Aye aye!!” (TA-TUMP!!). Krieg turns to Luffy: “Boy… of the two of us, who do you think is king of the pirates material?” The Krieg-pirates fawn: “He’s not the boss of a 50-ship fleet for nothing. Wh-what authority.” On page 7 — a full-panel hero-shot with DOOM SFX wrapped around the panel — Luffy under his straw hat, grin: “ME.” The chapter’s signature line lands in a single word.

Sanji (page 7, panel 3): “What? You just can’t help yourself!!” A cook gasps “He’s not going to…”; Krieg snaps “You dogs stay out of this.” Krieg lifts a giant cannonball (page 8, DOOM): “I’ll show that dreamer of a kid… what strength really is!!!” The Krieg crew recoils in panic: “It’s the MH5!!! P-please, Don Krieg, not that!!!” — the Krieg-Pirates’ own men beg him not to deploy the weapon. Luffy, oblivious: “What is it?”

Luffy proposes the standard counter (page 9): “If it’s a cannonball, I’ll bounce it right back!” — the Ch. 17 Buggy-Ball bounce-back tactic. Krieg loads the round (5? Mh…). Sanji’s panic shifts register (page 9): “Please, Don Krieg, let me kill the kid…” — a spare-Luffy gambit dressed as a let-me-do-it offer. Krieg’s flat reply: “It doesn’t matter whose hand kills him.” Then the chapter’s villain-axis doctrine (page 9, large panel, MH5 barrel in foreground, Krieg-shield-jolly-roger reverse-side): “This is war! All that matters is victory! You know that above all I detest… sentimental tripe like ‘honor’ and ‘mercy.’”

Page 10 — Krieg loads the MH5 (CHANK! KA-CHAK!): “…using the poison-gas cannonball!!! Winning is everything, even if it means…” Crew (terrified): “P-poison gas!!? Don Krieg!! One whiff of this noxious poison and you’ll turn to mush.” The cannon fires (BOOM): “This is true strength!!!” Page 11: Krieg’s own crew dives for the water (DANGER! DIVE DEEP!!! / SPLOOSH!). The cannonball arcs toward Luffy (WOOO); Sanji shouts “STOP, YOU FOOL!!” but Luffy grins: “No big deal, I’ll just knock it into the water.”

Page 12 — Luffy kicks the cannonball back (foot mid-arc, the cannonball flying back at Krieg). Krieg watches it return: “Poison gas, so what…? Heh…” — and the cannonball, mid-air over the Krieg flagship, transforms: !!? / WOING! / The round bursts open into a shuriken-bomb spray (WOING!!). Krieg (impassive): “Wrong!!” Page 13 — the shuriken-bomb detonates over Luffy (CHNK CHNK / VWRRR / UWAAH! / KLAK / KLUNK); Luffy is staggered (UMP… SHURIKEN!? / YIP!! / SPLSA). The cook gasps “A shuriken bomb!! It was a trick!! …That hurt!!”

Krieg laughs (page 14, HA HA!!): “You think I’d waste it just to rub out two pieces of trash? You don’t use something as valuable as the poison-gas cannonball for this! I could annihilate an entire village with one of those!” Luffy (rubbing his head, sitting): “You’re a little slow!! HEY!! THAT WASN’T POISON GAS!! …But it hurts.” A cook: “Why’s he taking it so calmly?” Sanji: “That’s one point for you!! I see.” Krieg (full-face panel, DOOM): “This is war, sonny! I have many ways of killing you! Now I ask you again, which of us is king of the pirates material!!?”

Page 15 — Luffy splash (DA-DOOM!!), grin, arms-akimbo, eye twitch from the shurikens: “You don’t have what it takes!! ME!!!” The Ch. 6 hero-grin pose redeployed at maximum framing. Krieg pivots: “Gin! Do your duty and send that cook to hell!!” (page 15, panel 3). Gin (in profile, silent): ”…!” — single beat-mark, no spoken acceptance. The Krieg crew (gulp gulp): “D-Don Krieg is r-really mad!!” Luffy (parallel-cut): ”…I’ll kill him myself!!!” Krieg adds: “As for this callow whelp…” (RRMMBB…).

Page 16 — A new SFX (WOOOOO) and Krieg in silhouette raises a massive spiked-mace / war-club above his head (rounded head, spike-array). Gin (small, profile, downcast): “Understood, Don Krieg.” The wording is the minimum-acknowledgment register — no aye aye, no enthusiasm. Cut to Sanji (DOOM): “You small-fry scoundrel.” Cut to Gin’s reply (DOOM, sweat, sad): “Heh heh… We’ll see about that… But you can’t beat me!! Sorry, Sanji.” The two combatants who became mutually-defined through Ch. 44’s silent-feeding-of-Gin scene apologize to each other for the imminent fight.

Page 17 — Krieg (war-club in foreground, DOOM): “I’ll send you flying. Try it. And you’ll see how insignificant your little power is. Now, boy, I’ll show you the armed might that rules the East Blue.” Luffy, in profile under the hat, fists clenched (krak krak): “I’m coming across, so say your prayers.” Krieg (laughing): “Heh heh heh… why don’t you fly over again?” The Krieg-Luffy duel is set in starting positions; the actual swing is the next chapter’s payload.
