Chapter 12: Dog

Summary

The chapter opens on Buggy (Buggy) rallying his crew in the streets of Orange Town — three “little losers” have humiliated them, and it’s “time for Mohji’s Wild Animal Show.” Mohji (Mohji) arrives mounted on his pet lion Richie (Richie) and asks permission to take Zolo’s head (pages 2-3). Cut to Luffy and Zoro retreating through empty streets — Zolo has lost too much blood from the previous chapter’s duel and collapses (Ch. 11 payoff). They land in front of a Pet Food shop where a small white dog — Chouchou (Chouchou) — sits motionless guarding the door (pages 6-7). Luffy pokes the dog to see if it’s real; Chouchou bites him, beginning a comic two-page slapstick of dog-vs-Luffy (pages 7-9). Nami arrives, sighing at their hiding choice (page 7), and reveals she has stolen the key to Luffy’s cage — “Then the rescue… was a success after all!” says Zolo (page 8). Luffy promptly drops the key; Chouchou eats it (page 9). The chase for the key is interrupted by Boodle (Boodle), the mayor of the town, who arrives in armor with a spear and identifies himself with the formal-caption-frame Oda reserves for new characters: “BOODLE — MAYOR OF PORT TOWN” (page 10). Boodle stashes Zolo at his house — there’s a refugee shelter outside the occupied zone where all the civilians have gone to wait out Buggy’s reign (page 11) — then takes Luffy and Nami back to the Pet Food shop and tells them Chouchou’s story across pages 11-15: Chouchou’s master ran the shop, fell sick three months ago, and died — but the townsfolk lied to Chouchou and said he was at the hospital. Chouchou guards the shop because “it’s all that’s left of his beloved master” (page 14). Mohji’s lion-roar reaches them; Boodle and Nami flee while Luffy stays caged in the street, refusing to abandon the dog (page 15). Mohji rides up on Richie and offers Luffy a bargain: tell me where Zolo is and I’ll spare you (pages 16-18). Luffy refuses; Richie smashes the cage open with one paw-strike (page 19) and then knocks Luffy through two buildings with a single hit (pages 19-20). Mohji rides off to hunt Zolo, mistakenly satisfied Luffy is dead. The chapter ends with Luffy crawling out of the rubble, freed from the cage at last, grinning: “Okay, now I’ll show all of these clowns… and make that thief, Nami, our navigator!” (page 21). • Mohji the Lion Tamer — first appearance. Captioned “Buggy’s First Mate Mohji the Lion Tamer” (page 3). Wears a furry suit and a lion-pelt hood; rides a giant lion named Richie. Claims animal-control as a power: “There’s not an animal alive that I can’t control” (page 18). Whether this is a Devil Fruit or a learned skill is not on-page in Ch. 12 — the chapter only commits to the capability.
• Richie — Mohji’s beast-companion. Giant lion, comprehends speech, takes simple verbal commands (“Get him, Richie!” page 19; “C’mon, Richie, let’s go find Roronoa Zolo” page 20). Smashes the cage and Luffy through two buildings with a single paw-strike (pages 19-20).
