Giant lion. Mohji’s beast-companion and mount on the Buggy Pirates crew.
Profile
First appearance Ch. 12 page 3. Visibly intelligent — responds to verbal commands (“Get him, Richie!” page 19; “C’mon, Richie, let’s go find Roronoa Zolo” page 20). Has the size of a small horse (Mohji rides him comfortably and Luffy is dwarfed by his head in page 16’s establishing shot).
Arc-by-arc updates
Loguetown (Ch. 99) — Returns with Mohji guarding Buggy’s ship at the port
- Reappears with Mohji at the Loguetown port (page 5).
- Implied to have rejoined Buggy’s crew via the Ch. 22-95 Richie-bike cover-story arc.
Buggy Cover Story Part 21 (Ch. 66) — Beaten and prone in “An Unhappy Reunion”
Ritchie lies face-up on the ground, !GAAAH!!, with Buggy standing over him. The Part-19 captain-pose has inverted. See Buggy Ritchie Unhappy Reunion Cover Beat (proposed).
Cover-story Part 20 (Ch. 65) — Co-captain alongside the Mystery Woman; roars “YEAHHHHH!!!” with binoculars at the wheel of a ship; discovers a pirate-galleon together
Baratie cover-story (Ch. 60) — Cover-story Part 19: “Complete!! Ritchie’s Pirate Crew” — Ritchie poses as captain, displacing Buggy
Syrup Village cover-story (Ch. 36) — Cover-story Part Two: limping, bandaged, alive
- Cover-story Part Two appearance (page 1 splash). Shown limping with a bandaged head/leg next to Cabaji’s unicycle. Survived Orange Town. Aesthetic intact (still recognizably the Buggy Pirates’ mount). Caption “BUGGY’S CREW: AFTER THE BATTLE! PART TWO: MOHJI AND CABAJI.” See Buggy Crew Post-Battle Cover Story (new this chapter).
Syrup Village cover-story (Ch. 30)
- Cover splash appearance (page 1) — bottom-left silhouette helping the crew move the giant figurehead-statue.
Volume-bonus paratext (Ch. 23)
- Appears in the Ch 23 page 20 volume-bonus Rough Sketch page alongside Mohji.
Orange Town (Ch. 16)
- First on-page name spoken by Buggy (p. 5): “Cabaji! What’re you doing to Richie!?” — Buggy addresses the lion by name, registering Richie as a named member of the crew worth defending. First explicit animal-as-named-officer moment in the series. Foreshadows Oda’s later beast-officer pattern (Chouchou the dog, Lucci’s leopard Zoan, Kaku’s giraffe Zoan, Mr. 4’s baseball dog, etc.).
- Used as a shield by Mohji in defeat (p. 5, Mohji: “I was using him as a shield. Didn’t want to soil my raiment.”) — vanity-tell paid in Richie’s body. Lion is unconscious in the rubble alongside Mohji at chapter open.
- Used as Cabaji’s unicycle-vehicle (p. 5, VRREEEEN) — Cabaji emerges from inside Richie’s mouth on his unicycle. The abuse of the lion prompts Buggy’s named-address (above). Richie is knocked out by Cabaji’s misuse.
Orange Town (Ch. 13)
- Visible from page 4 onward, biting Chouchou the dog as an opening flex.
- Roars at Luffy on page 8 (“DOOM!!” panel — feet planted in the cobblestones, framed for menace).
- Named on page 11 (“Richie, bite his head off!!”).
- Hammered into the cobblestones by Gum-Gum Gavel (page 12).
Orange Town (Ch. 12)
- First appearance (page 3) — bursts in roaring (ROWR), Mohji crossed-armed on his back.
- Demonstrates beast-tier strength: smashes Luffy’s cage open with a single paw-strike (page 19), then launches Luffy through two consecutive buildings with one more strike (pages 19-20). The cage that held Luffy across three chapters is broken in one hit.
- Responds to “Have a snack, but be quick about it” (page 21) — implies Richie eats people. Snacks on the wreckage of the Pet Food shop area (page 21).
- Open: Richie’s intelligence floor is left ambiguous — comprehension of full sentences vs. trained response to vocal cue is not committed-to in Ch. 12.
