“Captain John” — a tall zombie “general” under Absalom on Thriller Bark; the reanimated corpse of a once-notorious dead pirate
Profile
A tall zombie “general” under Absalom on Thriller Bark — the reanimated corpse of a once-infamous dead pirate. Absalom orders him to “live up to the infamy you enjoyed while still alive” (p. 2), giving the first on-page evidence that Thriller Bark’s zombie army is built from the corpses of formerly famous pirates.
Arc-by-arc updates
God Valley — his powers + his betrayal, shown (Ch. 1163) — shown ALIVE (deep flashback)
- See Magnet-Magnet Fruit, Ganzui.
Rocks-Pirates flashback (Ch. 1156) — shown ALIVE (deep flashback)
- First on-page appearance alive — shown as a member of the pre-God-Valley Rocks Pirates, discussing the Galleila legend: “I only know of them as a legend… if they exist, they’re corpses.” (p. 16). His first depiction outside the Thriller Bark zombie state.
- See Rocks Pirates, Rocks and God Valley.
Thriller Bark (Ch. 451) — first appearance; named
- Named on-page (p. 2) when Absalom rallies his zombie generals for the night hunt and tells John to “live up to the infamy you enjoyed while still alive” — establishing the Thriller Bark zombies as reanimated corpses of once-notorious dead pirates.
SBS reveal — killed by his own crew
Summit War — treasure thread kept live (Ch. 525) — referenced off-page
Impel Down — treasure marker reappears (Ch. 527) — referenced; the armband marker reaches Buggy
- The treasure-map armband (taken from Gecko Moria’s Thriller Bark hoard, later gifted to Luffy by Nami) is explicitly identified on-page as “Captain John’s treasure marker” (pp. 10-12). Buggy — who has chased Captain John’s loot since Ch. 233 — takes it from Luffy. On-page confirmation of the SBS Vol 49 reveal that ties the Thriller Bark “Captain John” zombie to Buggy’s treasure hunt. Cross-link Captain John Treasure Marker Reaches Buggy (new).
Named as a Rocks member (Ch. 957)
- “Captain John” listed among the named former Rocks Pirates (p. 6) — establishing the Thriller-Bark treasure legend as a one-time Rocks officer (alongside the Golden Lion, the Silver Axe, Wang Zhi). Named only, not depicted here. See Rocks and God Valley.
