Chapter 47: The Don's Offer

Summary

The chapter opens on the Baratie dining hall in chaos (page 2, top panel — “AAAAAAAAH..!!”) — customers and waitstaff scream and bolt for the lifeboats (“Let’s get out of here!!” / “Get on the boat!!”, page 2 panels 4-5) as the diners process what Don Krieg just announced. The cook-staff confirms the news in a yelled headline (page 2, panel 6 — Patty: “OUTRAGEOUS!! KRIEG WANTS THE OCEANGOING RESTAURANT?!!”). Luffy rushes to the collapsed Gin (“GIN!! ARE YOU OKAY?!”, page 3 panel 1); Gin’s face is downcast (“Don Krieg… you swore…”, page 3 panel 2). Sanji stands behind Luffy.

Krieg, towering and shoulder-armored, restates the demand (pages 3-4): “WHEN I’M FINISHED WITH YOU, I’LL DUMP YOU. My ship’s a wreck. I need a new one.” He explains the operational rationale (page 4): “I have about a hundred men on my ship who still draw breath. They’re dying from wounds, hunger and thirst. They need a hundred rations of food and water. You will prepare them. There’s no time to waste. Some have already starved to death.” The page-4 long-shot of Krieg’s galleon — adrift, masts shredded, dwarfing the Baratie below — is the chapter’s most important silent panel: the ship that returned from the Grand Line is barely afloat.

The Baratie head chef and the cooking line refuse (page 5 — head chef: “It’s not a request. Refuse? You don’t under-stand.” Cooks: “So they’ll have the strength to take over our ship?! You expect us to feed a hundred pirates?! WE REFUSE!!!”). Krieg fills the page with the chapter’s most threatening face (page 5, large center panel): “DO NOT DEFY ME!!! IT’S AN ORDER!” The cooks turn to face Sanji, who is already walking towards the kitchen door — “Where are you going, Sanji?” / “You!! You got us into this mess!!” Sanji apologizes to one cook (page 5, panel 7: “Sorry, Sanji… I… I never meant—”).

Page 6 establishes Sanji’s identity-line. Sanji, cigarette in mouth, hand raised: “We’ve got a hundred meals to prepare.” / “The kitchen, of course.” Luffy: “Sanji.” — Sanji: “That’s right.” The cooks panic: “SANJI?!!” / “WHAT?!!” In the lower large panel, every cook in the kitchen draws a pistol on Sanji (KOLIK..!! page 6, panel 6) — a Baratie firing line, Sanji at the center. Page 7 escalates: “It’s an outrage!! We’re not going along with this. We can’t let you into the kitchen. Are you Krieg’s dog, Sanji?” Sanji spreads his arms wide, palms out, in the chapter’s signature Sanji-pose (page 7 center panel): “If you want to stop me… fire.” Cooks freeze; Sanji explains (page 7, lower panels + page 8 top): “But my job is to feed people, not to judge them. It gets too complicated. …they’re unredeemable villains. …I know…” — Luffy nods at this. Sanji finishes: “That’s a cook’s job. If a man is hungry, I feed him!!!”

Enter Patty from the back of the dining hall (page 8, panel 3-4): “What’s the problem?” — and from another cook: “PATTY!! HOLD HIM DOWN.” Patty wallops Sanji in a single-blow panel (“WHAM!!”, page 8, panel 5 + 6) and grandstands (page 9, panels 1-2): “Now you keep still. I’m gonna defend this restaurant!! But this time, you’re wrong!! Sanji, I know you feed the people I chase off. Maybe you’re right to do that sometimes.” — then to the dining hall (panel 3): “He can’t beat all of us!! He may be Don Krieg, but he’s just one man.” — and panel 5: “And we know what kind of customer service to give ‘em!!! This is Baratie! We deal with rowdy pirates every day.”

Page 10 (top) — Patty’s Meatball of Doom: a comically-massive bazooka-cannon shaped like a meatball, with a yelled menu line: “KA-CHAK!!” / “HERE’S YOUR DESSERT!!!” / “YOU’VE EATEN!” — fired directly at Krieg across the dining floor. Page 18 (top panel — silence-panel) — “CHEF ZEFF!!” yells a small voice from the kitchen door; an enormous figure in a chef’s hat with a long braid stands silhouetted in the kitchen-entrance. “KLUNK…” — the figure has stomped a foot down onto the floor; a large sack of food sits beside him on the floor. Page 18 (middle row): Krieg, taken aback: “Did you say ZEFF?! Zeff…” Across the room, the chef in the doorway: “There’s food for a hundred. Take it to your men.” Lower row — cooks panic (“CHEF!! WHAT’RE YOU THINKING?!!” / “If we feed all those pirates… they’ll come and overrun us!”) — Zeff (off-panel but understood from speech-bubble origin): “Unless they’re all… spineless dogs.” Page 18, panel 6: a small “tump…” by the food sack.

New reveals

• Krieg’s actual problem is the Baratie itself, not food. (page 2, panel 6 — Patty: “OUTRAGEOUS!! KRIEG WANTS THE OCEANGOING RESTAURANT?!!” / page 3 panel 6 — Krieg: “My ship’s a wreck. I need a new one.”) The food-and-water demand is the softening volley; the real demand is to seize the ship after the food restores his crew. The arc is structured as a siege dressed as an extortion.
• Krieg’s armada numbers — 50 ships, 5,000 men, vs. ~100 survivors — are stated in the same chapter (page 4 panel 1 vs. page 17 panel 3). The reader is given both numbers without the in-text explanation; the gap (4,900 missing) is the chapter’s largest implicit reveal. Whatever annihilated Krieg’s armada happened on the Grand Line — and it happened fast enough that he limped back to East Blue with the survivors.
• Krieg’s body is a weapons platform. Pages 13-17 step through the spec sheet: wootz-steel carapace (page 16), diamond-fist gauntlets (page 17), shoulder/arm/chest gun-barrels (pages 14-17). The body-design is equipment-based, not Devil-Fruit-based — Krieg is East Blue’s industrial weapons answer to the Grand Line, and the chapter’s structural irony is that even all this engineering wasn’t enough to survive what’s out there.
• Sanji’s central moral axiom — “If a man is hungry, I feed him” — is stated for the first time on-page (page 6 panel 1, page 8 panels 1-2). This is the Sanji identity line for the entire series. Every later Sanji ethical decision (feeding starving Luffy on Drum Island, the Big Mom Whole-Cake feast, the Wano refusal-to-make-soba moment in Ch. 904) traces back to this declaration.
• Sanji’s recruitment-signature feat: stand between the guns and the hungry. Page 7 center panel — Sanji spreads his arms, palms-out, in front of every cook’s drawn pistol: “If you want to stop me… fire.” This is Sanji’s introduction-feat in the recruitment-pattern: the visual that predicts his crew role. Sanji’s crew role will be the body-between-the-violence-and-the-vulnerable — feeding starving people, defending Nami from Absalom, sheltering Pudding’s heart from Big Mom. The arms-spread posture recurs on every iteration. First on-page instance is page 7 of Ch. 47.
• Patty is named on-page (page 5, panel 7) and given a defining feat (the Meatball of Doom, pages 9-10). Patty is established as the comedic-violent Baratie cook who fights with weaponized food. His position in the arc — Sanji’s foil among the cooks — is set up here.
• The Baratie cooks frame themselves as a crew (page 8, panels 3-5) before any in-text label of “Baratie Cooks” as a fighting unit. “This is Baratie! We deal with rowdy pirates every day.” — the restaurant is openly a defensible holding with an internal fighting culture, not a passive establishment. The cooks’ military self-conception is the in-text setup for them holding their own (or trying to) against a fragment of a Grand Line armada.
• The Grand Line is named as the place that broke Krieg (page 19, panel 2: “You went to the Grand Line.” / panel 3: “But you ran scared, eh?”). The chapter delivers the first on-page narrative confirmation of the earlier warnings: the Grand Line is not merely dangerous, it is the place that turns East Blue’s strongest pirate (5,000 men, 50 ships) into a starving 100-man wreck. The text uses this not as exposition but as Zeff’s rhetorical weapon against Krieg.
• “Red Shoes” Zeff is introduced by epithet (page 19, bottom panel — Patty: ""RED SHOES” ZEFF!”). The epithet appears once, without context. The structural choice — give the epithet at the cliff, withhold the explanation — is the same one Oda used for “Pirate Hunter” Zoro (Ch. 3-4): name appears first, face appears later, history appears later still. The Zeff backstory (former pirate, survived the Grand Line, lost a leg) is explicitly seeded but not delivered in this chapter. Cliff is calibrated to make the reader want Ch. 48.
• Krieg’s reaction to “Zeff” is the chapter’s bombshell (page 18, middle row: “Did you say ZEFF?! Zeff…”). Krieg recognizes the name and visibly slackens. The chapter’s tyrant — the man who fills page 14 with diamond fists and “INSOLENCE!!!!” — is afraid of a kitchen-staff name. The name does the work of a punch. Compare Ch. 3-4 where the name “Roronoa Zolo” did the same to Helmeppo.
• Zeff’s silhouette + foot-stomp introduction (page 18, top panel — “KLUNK…”). Zeff arrives off-screen-named-first, on-screen-revealed-second. The page-18 silhouette panel deliberately conceals his pegleg (a critical visual detail for the Ch. 48+ backstory) — the silhouette shows a stocky figure in chef’s whites, but the leg-detail is staged in shadow at the bottom of the frame. The KLUNK SFX is the peg leg hitting the floor — the reader gets the sound-clue to the disability before the visual reveal of it. Sound-first, sight-second reveal grammar.
• Cover story (page 1) — Buggy’s Crew After the Battle Part Nine: “You’re a Strange Creature, Too”: Buggy alone (head atop a treasure chest in a moonlit forest), surrounded by strange jungle creatures (tiger, fox-eared dog, baby-tiger-headed pig, elephant-trunked dog, hybrid goat/giraffe). The creatures match the unique fauna of Gaimon’s Island (Ch. 22-23). Strongly implied: Buggy has washed up on the Strange Animals Island Luffy’s crew visited earlier. This is cover-story B-plot geography establishing that the East Blue cover-stories share a setting with the main story.
