The seed

Buggy’s cover-story spans Ch 36-39 covers as a 4-part comic “Buggy’s Crew: After the Battle”.

PartChapterCover scene
Part 1Ch. 36Cabaji on unicycle carrying unconscious Mohji + bandaged Richie
Part 2Ch. 37Buggy alone in a forest with a single white duck (“BUGGY’S ADVENTURE”)
Part 3Ch. 38(Note: Part 3 in vault Chapter 0037 metadata; needs verification — possibly the picnic-with-the-goat composition is a Straw-Hat-side cover, not Buggy. Reader to verify with chapter file.)
Part 4Ch. 39Buggy stranded with a giant saw-billed bird and chicks, fish-bones at his feet (“BUGGY AND THE GIANT BIRD”)
Part 6Ch. 42Cabaji-and-Mohji-and-Richie outdoor meal with ducks; “BOOOOPS!” / “TASTES BAD!!”; title: A Trip Through the Sky
Part 7Ch. 43Buggy stranded on an island of bizarre hybrid fauna (rabbit-eared/tailed snake, panda-faced bird/monkey, lion-bodied pig-faced animal); title: The Island of Random Rare Animals
Part 8Ch. 46Buggy mid-leap with sword drawn, fighting an animal opponent in a forest setting; title: Decisive Duel in the Forest
Part 10Ch. 48Buggy in a tiny single-occupant raft (sail-mast, two oars) screams ‘SHYAAAA!!’ rowing away from a small group of figures on a distant beach; title: Farewell to Friends
Part 11Ch. 50Buggy stuck inside a giant clam, only his pirate-captain hat visible; two small fish-creatures peek at him; surrounding rubble suggests post-battle wreckage; title: A New Friend
Part 12Ch. 51New blonde woman in pirate-captain regalia with flintlock pistol; empty Buggy costume beside her; broken giant clam (Part 11 callback); title: A Woman of Mystery
Part 15Ch. 55Mohji, Cabaji, and a small curly-haired officer mourning at a wooden grave marker topped with Buggy’s pirate-captain hat; title: Oh Captain, You’re in Our Hearts
Part 20Ch. 65”Discovery! Our Pirate Ship!!!” — Mystery Woman + Richie at ship’s wheel sharing thought-bubble of pirate-galleon; Buggy absent
Part 27Ch. 74Parade!! — Buggy at center, hands raised, sweat-marks, surrounded by a parade of smaller Buggy-coded figures (pumpkin-faced, top-hatted, etc.) — parade-of-lookalikes identity-crisis composition

What it confirms

Confirms Buggy survived the Ch 20 Gum-Gum Bazooka detonation. The Bazooka launched Buggy off-page; the cover-story is Oda’s mechanism for keeping a defeated antagonist on the narrative board between active appearances.

The technique

Cover-story-as-canon execution — first in-series instance (per predictions-history.md 1.11 which names this as a verified technique-pattern). The Buggy cover-story chain runs across multiple arcs and eventually pays off in:

The 4-part Syrup Village cover-story is the originating instance of the multi-chapter cover-story-as-recovery-vector pattern in the series. Every later defeated-antagonist who survives off-page in a cover-story arc is operating downstream of this seed.

The escalation across the 4 parts

The progression escalates from crew-still-together (Part 1) to captain-alone-with-companion (Part 2) to captain-alone-with-antagonist (Part 4). The Buggy-as-comedic-survivor register that becomes the captain’s defining tone for the rest of the series is installed across these four chapters.
