Chapter 8: Nami

Summary

Luffy and Zoro drift aimlessly across East Blue in their tiny rowboat — neither can navigate. Zoro mocks Luffy for being a pirate captain who can’t sail; Luffy realizes his crew also needs a cook and a musician. Starving, Luffy rocket-launches himself at a passing seabird (Gum-Gum Rocket), gets carried off, and ends up shouting for help over the sea. Zoro rows after him and accidentally scoops up three shipwrecked Buggy Pirate mooks (Mohji-tier nobodies in this cameo). The mooks recognize Zoro as “Pirate Hunter Zolo” and grovel — they explain they were tricked by an orange-haired girl: she pretended to be a castaway, was let aboard their treasure-laden ship, then used incoming weather to sink them and escape with the haul. The girl, Nami, is introduced visually on her stolen Buggy ship enjoying the spoils. Cut to Orange Town, where Buggy’s flagship looms over the harbor: Nami has just stolen a map of the Grand Line from Buggy himself and is fleeing down the street with Buggy mooks chasing her. Buggy orders the cannon fired at “something odd in the sky” — it’s Luffy falling out of the sky, his Gum-Gum Rocket having finally come down. The cannonball detonates next to Nami; Luffy crashes through a roof beside her. Nami, thinking on her feet, hugs Luffy and calls him “Boss!” in front of the recovering mooks, framing him as their leader to escape. After the mooks flee with Luffy’s straw hat as a trophy, Luffy beats them (“…the hat! Don’t touch…” — first onscreen rage-trigger over the hat post-Ch 1), and Nami — impressed he took down armed pirates barehanded — offers to team up: “The name’s Nami!! I specialize in robbing pirates.”

New reveals

• The crew needs a navigator. Zoro’s line “What kind of pirate doesn’t know how to navigate a ship?” explicitly defines the Strawhats’ next recruitment beat. Luffy expands: cook, musician.
• The Grand Line is named for the first time — as a destination Luffy intends to reach but currently can’t.
• A map of the Grand Line exists, is rare/valuable, and is held by Buggy the Clown until Nami steals it (page 15, panel 1). The map is the chapter’s central MacGuffin.
• Buggy the Clown is introduced (off-page in body, on-page only as Jolly Roger and silhouette/cannon-firing posture): a Devil Fruit user, “Fruit of the Devil!” — the second named Devil Fruit user in the series after Luffy. Feared “in these parts.”
• Nami’s MO: she steals only from pirates. Her introduction performance — fake castaway, sob story, scout the chest, hijack the ship — is the chapter’s set-piece.
• Zoro’s bounty/rep: he’s already a known commodity at sea. Even rank-and-file Buggy mooks recognize “Pirate Hunter Zolo” on sight (page 7) and instantly capitulate.
• The hat = trigger: when a Buggy mook claims the straw hat, Luffy goes from goofy to lethal in a single panel (page 18-19). First post-Ch 1 demonstration of the hat’s weight to him.

• Pages 18-19: A Buggy mook picks up Luffy’s straw hat off the cobblestones. Luffy’s face shifts — “…the hat! Don’t touch…” — into the dark “GRRRRRR” panel. The post-Ch 1 reaffirmation of the hat’s weight.
• Page 19, final panel: Nami offers Luffy her hand: “Wanna team up with me?!” — the founding moment of the real Strawhat duo dynamic (captain + navigator).

• Who is Buggy the Clown, and what is his Devil Fruit? → resolved next chapter; seeded here.
• What is Nami’s actual goal? The “robbing pirates” line is presented as cynical pragmatism. The Arlong backstory motive is ~60 chapters away. → seeds Nami Backstory and Bell-mere.
• What’s on the Grand Line, and why is a map of it Buggy’s prized possession? → ongoing through What is the One Piece.
• Does Zoro have a bounty already? “Pirate Hunter Zolo” is a known name in East Blue — implies prior career; first hard bounty number comes later.
