- Luffy hits the Buggy nose taboo on-page: 'You got that, big nose!?' — Buggy's reaction is immediate and apocalyptic ('I consider this a declaration of war!!!')
- Luffy recruits Nami into the crew unilaterally: 'She's our new navigator!' — first declarative on-page recruitment of Nami; Nami denies ('Actually... I'm... a thief.')
- Reveal of an iron cage spec: 'It took five of us to move it!' — the cage is heavy enough to be a structural obstacle, not a portable prop
- Volume sketch reveals 'Mōji' / a beast-tamer with a lion — informal preview of Mohji (Buggy First Mate) and Richie before their canonical on-page debut
Arc: Orange Town · Saga: East Blue · Released: 1997-10-20 (Vol. 2)
Summary
Picking up from Ch. 10’s cliffhanger, Zoro casually defeats four Buggy Pirates mooks who lunge at him in the Orange Town plaza, dropping them with a single sword-flash (p. 2, “FLUMP!! FLUMP!!”). He approaches Luffy’s iron cage but can’t break the bars without a key. Buggy arrives and stabs Zoro in the back — except his stabbing hand is detached and floating (pp. 4-5). This is the first on-page demonstration of Buggy’s Devil Fruit: Zoro names it “the Chop-Chop Fruit” (p. 5), and Buggy himself confirms — “That’s the Devil Fruit that I ate!!! You can slice and dice me, but you can’t kill me!!! I’m a Chop-Chop Man!!!” (p. 6). The fruit is named on-page for the first time in the series. Buggy wounds Zoro near-fatally; the crew taunts that Zoro should’ve known to expect this from a “devil-tree fruit” eater. Luffy goads Buggy (‘I’m gonna clobber you!!!’) from inside the cage. Nami is paralyzed between escape and rescue — “If I don’t do something, those two will end up dead — and so will I!!!” (p. 7). Luffy lands the Buggy-nose taboo directly: “You got that, BIG NOSE!?” (p. 8) — the plaza goes silent, Buggy erupts. Nami panics-grabs the iron cage from behind, shouting “Now we gotta finish what we started!” — and to everyone’s surprise, the cage rolls (with Luffy in it) as Zoro retreats with her. Buggy fires the “CHOP-CHOP CANNON!” — a detached arm-rocket — at Zoro, who parries the impossible-to-counter projectile with both swords (pp. 12-13, “KLANG! KLANG!”) but takes more damage. Buggy points his harbor cannon — loaded with a Buggy Ball — at the fleeing trio (p. 13). Nami lights the fuse on a smaller cannon mid-flight and fires back at Buggy (p. 14, “KABOOM!”), buying them an escape window. The three flee through the smoke-blanketed plaza. Buggy, recovered and apoplectic in the wreckage of his courtyard, declares: “I consider this a declaration of war!!! Clearly we’re not dealing with common thieves!!!” (p. 19). The chapter closes with the three on a rooftop: Luffy still trapped in the iron cage that Zoro and Nami can’t open, the cage’s klanging signature now their problem. The volume bonus page is “One Piece Rough Sketch!” — Oda’s design notes for Mōji, a beast-tamer Buggy subordinate riding/commanding a lion-pet (pre-canonical sketch of Mohji + Richie, who arrive in subsequent chapters).
New reveals
- Bara Bara no Mi — named (p. 5, in Zoro’s mouth: “The Chop-Chop Fruit…!!!”; p. 6, Buggy: “That’s the Devil Fruit that I ate!!!… I’m a Chop-Chop Man!!!”). First in-series naming of the fruit after three chapters of “the fruit of the devil” placeholders (Ch. 8, Ch. 9, Ch. 10).
- Powers demonstrated for the first time: body-segmentation (hand floats, page 5 caption “THE HAND… IT’S FLOATING!”); slashing-immunity (“You can slice and dice me, but you can’t kill me!!!”, p. 6); whole-body reassembly (Buggy’s body re-forming, p. 6, Luffy: “His body is back together again!”); ranged segment-projection — Chop-Chop Cannon — a detached arm rocketed across the plaza (p. 12).
- First named Bara Bara technique: Chop-Chop Cannon (p. 12, “BUSHHH!”). The naming-convention precedent — DF-class + “Cannon” / “Pistol” / etc. — is now in the vocabulary.
- Folk-myth restated, character-confirmed: Zoro on p. 7 — “I heard that this clown had eaten devil-tree fruit. I should have been prepared!” — and Nami on p. 6 — “I thought the stories about the devil fruit were just myths!”. Two more in-universe characters repeating the wrong “tree” folk explanation; second beat of the Devil Fruit Tree Myth seed planted in Ch. 2.
- Self-class identification: caption box on p. 6 — “GUM-GUM MAN” next to Buggy’s “CHOP-CHOP MAN!!!” — the first time the gum-gum vs. chop-chop framing is paired on the same beat. Sets the ”___-Man” naming convention for DF users.
- Buggy-nose taboo paid off, with Luffy as the trigger: Luffy is the first non-Buggy-crewman in the series to use a nose insult directly to Buggy’s face — “You got that, BIG NOSE!?” (p. 8). Buggy’s reaction (p. 19, full plaza wrecked, “Those three are trying to make a fool of me!!! No more clowning around!!! Who am I!? Pirate Captain Buggy the Clown!! I consider this a declaration of war!!!”) is the first on-page payoff of the Buggy Nose Taboo seed from Ch. 9.
- Nami recruited declaratively, denied: Luffy on p. 15 — “She’s our new navigator!”. Nami: “Actually… I’m… a thief.” — first time on-page Luffy unilaterally announces Nami as crew. Zoro’s evaluation from Ch. 8 (“She’d make a great navigator”) is now actioned, even before Nami consents. Reinforces Straw Hat Recruitment Pattern.
- Iron cage spec: “It took five of us to move it!” (p. 17) — the cage is heavy enough to be a structural plot anchor for the rest of the arc.
- Zoro’s character anchor — promises holds under combat duress: when Luffy tells Zoro to run alone, Zoro: “What? I’m not going anywhere! We’re trying to save you!” (p. 11). Zoro takes a near-fatal sword-wound rather than abandon a promise; the “man of my word” anchor from Ch. 3 is operational in active combat.
- Buggy’s worldview ledger: “No pirate would sacrifice himself to save a friend!” (p. 17, Buggy in disbelief at Zoro’s refusal to flee). First explicit statement of Buggy’s pirate-amorality model — the foil to Luffy’s nakama doctrine. Filed forward as a structural Buggy character-tell.
- Volume bonus — “One Piece Rough Sketch!” (p. 20): hand-drawn design page (with rough Japanese annotations) of Mōji (モージ) — a beast-tamer crew member of the Buggy Pirates, depicted with a fierce lion. Labels include “バギー船長” (Captain Buggy) and “猛獣使い モージ” (beast-tamer Mōji). This is canonical previewing of Mohji and his pet lion Richie, who appear in subsequent chapters of the arc. Pre-canonical Oda sketch material.
Foreshadowing seeds planted
Payoffs (seeds from earlier chapters that resolve here)
Mentions / appearances
- Luffy — continuing. Caged the entire chapter. Triggers Buggy’s nose taboo, declares Nami “our new navigator” unilaterally.
- Zoro — continuing. First on-page combat in Orange Town: one-flash-takes-four (p. 2), bleeds out near-fatally from Bara Bara segment-stab (p. 5), refuses to flee Luffy under fire (p. 11), parries the Chop-Chop Cannon (pp. 12-13). Three-sword draw is still not deployed; combat here is one-sword.
- Nami — continuing. First combat-assist beat: lights the harbor cannon and fires back at Buggy under live fire (p. 14). First time on-page she sides with Luffy in active combat, not just narratively.
- Buggy — continuing. First on-page DF combat usage; first fruit name spoken in his own voice; first named technique (Chop-Chop Cannon).
- Buggy Pirates — continuing. Four mooks taken out by Zoro (p. 2); the rest stand by witnessing the Buggy-vs-Zoro / Luffy-taunts beat.
- Orange Town — continuing. Plaza courtyard wrecked. Setting is now broken-stone-and-smoke.
- Bara Bara no Mi — first naming + first demonstration.
- Gomu Gomu no Mi — referenced obliquely via the “GUM-GUM MAN” caption box (p. 6) paired against “CHOP-CHOP MAN”.
- Buggy Balls — continuing. The cannon-aimed-at-Nami beat (p. 13) is loaded with a Buggy Ball; Nami pre-empts it by firing the side cannon first.
- Mōji / Mohji — volume bonus sketch only (p. 20). Not yet a canonical on-page character; design page only. Annotated with Japanese as “猛獣使い モージ” (beast-tamer Mōji) and labeled as a Buggy Pirates first-mate-tier figure.
- Richie — volume bonus sketch only (p. 20). Mohji’s pet lion, shown roaring full-page.
Notable panels
- Page 1 (chapter splash): Luffy mid-run across a cheetah-flanked savanna in a straw hat — first chapter-1 sequel splash that puts Luffy in a fantasy-biome wholly disconnected from the live plot. Establishes the splash-as-imaginary-vignette pattern that runs the entire series (cf. crew vacation splashes, etc.). The cheetah next to Luffy is a structural visual gag (cheetah = speed = “Flight” chapter title).
- Page 2: Zoro one-flash four-mooks. Drawn not full-page (unlike his Ch. 10 reveal); the camera deliberately de-escalates from the Ch. 10 splash into casual combat texture. The four “FLUMP” SFX panels are evenly spaced — Oda showing this is routine for Zoro, not exceptional.
- Pages 4-5: The floating-hand reveal. The Devil Fruit demonstration gets a two-page beat: page 4 = the apparent stab in the back (“WHAT THE—!? THAT HAND—!”), page 5 = the floating hand (“THE HAND… IT’S FLOATING!”) + Zoro’s recognition (“THE CHOP-CHOP FRUIT…!!!”). The two-page structure is Oda’s signature trick-revealed-then-named beat — used identically for many later DF reveals (Mr.3, Eneru, Foxy, etc.).
- Page 6 (mid-panel splash): Buggy in cruciform-arms pose, robe spread, “That’s the Devil Fruit that I ate!!!” — first canonical hero-pose for Buggy in the series. The pose with the spread-arms and tricorn hat will recur on splash pages and (much later) Wanted posters. Sub-panel: Luffy at the bottom — “That guy’s a freak!! Chop-chop man!?” with the “GUM-GUM MAN” caption box on Luffy and “CHOP-CHOP MAN” caption box on Buggy — first DF-class self-ID pairing in the series.
- Page 8 (full-panel reaction): “You got that, BIG NOSE!?” Luffy yelling out of the cage bars; panel 2 = the entire Buggy crew + Nami going “GASP !!! !!!!” in unison. The silent-panel-of-collective-horror composition is the Buggy-nose-taboo’s first on-page protagonist trigger.
- Page 13 (top): Detached arm rocketing across the plaza with the caption “CHOP-CHOP CANNON!” — first named Bara Bara technique. Page 13 (bottom): the cannon barrel pointed straight at Nami’s POV — “The big cannon’s pointed at us!!! And it’s loaded with one of my Buggy Balls!!” Nami’s first eye-to-eye confrontation with a Buggy Ball, just three pages after Buggy’s nose-taboo apocalypse.
- Page 14 (full-page): Nami lights the smaller side-cannon and fires back at Buggy — “LIGHT THIS THING!” / “YEAH!” / “KABOOM!!” — full-page “VRROOOSH” explosion plus the silhouette of the iron cage flying through the smoke. Nami’s first combat-action beat in the series; structurally, the moment she enrolls in the fight, not just the conspiracy.
- Page 17: Zoro carrying Nami and the rolled iron cage at full sprint; Buggy on screen-right, blood-streaked, in disbelief — “No pirate would sacrifice himself to save a friend!” Composition: Buggy stripped of his clown framing, lit straight from above, eyes shadow-blacked — same menacing-camera-grammar Oda used for the “DO IT.” panel in Ch. 10. The clown turns lethal again when his worldview is challenged.
- Page 19 (vertical triptych): Buggy in the wreckage of his own courtyard, arms thrown wide, “GRRRRRRR” — the apocalyptic-Buggy hero-pose. “Pirate Captain Buggy the Clown!! I consider this a declaration of war!!! Clearly we’re not dealing with common thieves!!!” — the chapter-ending villain self-aggrandization beat that mirrors Luffy’s chapter-1 King-of-the-Pirates declaration in formal structure. (Antagonist mission statement issued by a clown in striped pajamas pose — Oda’s tonal calibration trick.)
- Page 20 (volume bonus): “One Piece Rough Sketch!” — a hand-drawn page of Mōji designs + a lion. Annotations in Japanese reference “バギー船長” (Captain Buggy) summoning Mōji, and “猛獣使い モージ” (beast-tamer Mōji). The lion-with-mane portrait dominates the page. Pre-canon character preview, not part of the chapter’s narrative continuity.
Open questions raised
- What are the other rules of the Bara Bara no Mi? → How far can the segments travel from the body? What happens if a segment is removed entirely (buried, burnt)? Both are open here; partially resolved across the rest of the Orange Town arc.
- Are all Devil Fruits this varied? → Luffy is rubber, Buggy splits into pieces. Implicit reader question: every fruit is different. Sets up the every-fruit-is-its-own-rulebook pattern. Cross-link Nature of Devil Fruits.
- What’s the iron-cage key situation? → The cage is reinforced and the key is gone (Buggy crew p. 17, “The key to the cage…”) — sets up the rest of the arc’s “get Luffy out of the cage” subplot.
- Why does Buggy hate his nose so much? → seeded in Ch. 9, escalated here. Full payoff (Roger Pirates cabin-boy era, Shanks’s teasing) is far later. Cross-link Buggy Nose Taboo.
- Who is Mōji? → Volume-sketch only. The lion-tamer character previewed on p. 20 will arrive in canon shortly. (Note: in Ch. 10 Buggy’s crew already included a tall character with what appears to be a fur cap and lion-paw motifs in background panels — readers can retroactively spot the Mohji costume cue. Volume sketch confirms.)
Foreshadowing techniques exhibited this chapter
- chekhov-explicit: the iron cage’s specs (“it took five of us to move it!”) are stated only because the cage will be a plot anchor for the rest of the arc. Classic Chekhov.
- prop-tell: the “GUM-GUM MAN” / “CHOP-CHOP MAN” caption-box pairing on p. 6 is a visual-grammar tell — Oda is encoding the “DF-name + Man” convention.
- dialogue-from-dead-character: n/a this chapter.
- wardrobe-foreshadow: Buggy’s tricorn-and-fur-collar silhouette on p. 6 / p. 19 is identical to the silhouette he carries through to the Cross Guild post-skip era. The pose-as-future-Wanted-poster reading.
- negative-space: the “GASP” silent-panel on p. 8 — the entire crew + Nami reacting in unison to Luffy’s nose-jab — is a negative-space horror beat in a comedy chapter.
- fairy-tale-overlay: Buggy as the “clown who wrecks his own circus” — the courtyard he destroys on p. 19 is his own captain’s plaza. Clown-self-destruction is the running motif.
- cover-story-payoff: chapter cover is Luffy/cheetah savanna — pure imaginary vignette, no plot tie-in (the cover-as-imaginary-vignette pattern is now formalized after Nami’s desert-pig cover in Ch. 10).
- volume-bonus-as-character-preview (p. 20): pre-canon design sketch of Mōji as forward-foreshadowing channel.
