Mohji’s animal-trainer role-coding remains visible in the lion-mane hair silhouette even mid-crash — the signature visual identifier preserved across cover-story instalments convention (per Buggy Cover Story Snowboarding) holds.

SBS — Volume 4 (Ch. 29)

• Canonical hair-physiology note (p. 22 SBS, see SBS Volume 4): “He was born that way. But his hair grows longest in those two places. If he lets it go, he’ll start to look like a rabbit.” Oda supplies the canonical explanation for Mohji’s two-cone hair shape. The “looks like a rabbit” addendum is the lurking visual gag. Resolves the Ch. 12 / Ch. 17 “COSTUME!? THIS IS MY HAIR!!!” taboo into authorial canon: the hair is real, biologically grown into the two-cone shape.

Volume-bonus paratext (Ch. 23)

• Appears in the Ch 23 page 20 volume-bonus Rough Sketch page in his canon design (with Richie the lion). The page labels him “MOHJI THE ANIMAL TRAINER” — making explicit the circus-discipline framing that Buggy Crew As Circus is tracking.

Orange Town (Ch. 21)

• Confirmed alive (page 4) — survived his Ch. 13 KO and Ch. 16 shield-misuse defeat. Shown crumpled but conscious in the rubble.
• Plays dead with Cabaji (page 4): “What should we do?” — Cabaji: “I’ll play dead a while longer.” / Mohji: “Good idea.” The Buggy officers explicitly choose dishonor-survival over re-engagement. Pattern-anchor for the Buggy Pirates’ officers-survive-by-default axiom.
• Hears that Buggy got “clobbered” (page 4) — a mook (curly-haired) shouts the news within Mohji’s earshot. Mohji registers the captain’s loss but does not act on it. Confirms the Ch. 14 captain’s reputation matters more than the crew’s wounds axiom holds in reverse — Mohji prioritizes his own play-dead survival over rallying.

Orange Town (Ch. 16)

• First on-page name (p. 5, Buggy: “Mohji… you’re still alive?”). Also labeled “FIRST MATE” in the chapter-title triptych (p. 1).
• Vanity tell (p. 5): “I was using him as a shield. Didn’t want to soil my raiment.” — first-mate-as-coward archetype, first on-page example. Mohji’s vanity is his loyalty-failure flag.
• Bridges the DF lore to Buggy (p. 6): “He’s got special powers from eating the Devil Fruit — just like you!!! He’s a rubber man!!!” — Mohji is the in-world translator who tells Buggy that Luffy is a DF-class peer. First on-page moment of DF-user peer-class recognition in the series. Orange Town (Ch. 14)

• First on-page named as “First Mate Mohji” in Buggy-crew dialogue (page 2): a Buggy mook shouts “AHOY! First Mate Mohji’s back!” — confirms Mohji as the Buggy Pirates’ first mate explicitly in Ch 14 dialogue (the rank was already implied by Ch 12’s nameplate caption).
• Returns to the Drinker Pub defeated (page 2): crawling, half-naked, bloodied. Tries to warn Buggy: ”…The kid… cap’n… Buggy… I’ve got to tell him that the kid is a rubber man… g-got to tell him… cap’n, sir… beware… the rub-” before passing out mid-word.
• Buggy mishears “rub-” (page 3) as “rub” / massage technique, concluding Luffy is a “masseur” with a “diabolical rubbing technique” — comedy beat that drives the chapter’s tone.
• Title splash gag: chapter-1 splash shows Luffy wearing Mohji’s lion-tamer cape on a rooftop (Halloween/vampire pastiche). Visually confirms the off-page defeat by Luffy in Ch 13. Seeds Luffy Wears the Losers Clothes.

Orange Town (Ch. 13)

• First on-page naming (page 19 — Buggy-crew dialogue).
• Rides his lion Richie into the Pet Food shop area to confront Luffy. Richie bites Chouchou the dog on page 4 in a power-flex; Mohji insists “Don’t tell me you’re guarding this crummy shop?” (p. 3) before triggering the central destruction.
• Recognizes Luffy on sight as someone he believed dead (page 10): “You should be dead!!” — confirming that Mohji previously seemed to win an engagement against Luffy.
• Instant DF-class recognition (page 13): “You ate the devil’s fruit, like Captain Buggy!?” — Mohji links Luffy’s powers to Buggy’s the moment the framing is invoked. Reinforces Nature of Devil Fruits — DFs are public-knowledge categorized objects.
• Defeated by Luffy’s Gum-Gum Gavel + bowl-kick (pages 12-15). Mohji ends the chapter head-down in the cobblestones.
• Reported as defeated to Buggy on the chapter’s final page; Buggy’s response is to order the Buggy-Balls bombardment of the town.
