  • **Cover-serial Part 2 — Koby and Helmeppo as Marine chore boys** (page 1). New short-term concentrated cover serial: *KOBY AND HELMEPPO — LATER*. Composition: Koby (round glasses, manic open-mouth laugh-shout, holding a large bristle-broom across his shoulder) and Helmeppo (round glasses, blonde bowl-cut, sour-face holding a smaller broom in sweep-pose, **CHORE BOY** patch on his shirt sleeve), framed by Lieutenant Ripper (the 153rd-Branch / Navy-base lieutenant, dark vest, arms folded) standing between/behind them in a long corridor of the Marine base. A *MARINE*-labelled tin pail in the foreground. The cover canonizes **Helmeppo's enlistment alongside Koby** at the same branch under the same lieutenant; both are at the literal-bottom **Chore Boy** rank (cf. Ch. 66 SBS rank-chart). Page 27 (volume-page numeral) shows it as the volume-10 opener (volume 9 closed at Ch. 80). The cover is the chapter's only Koby/Helmeppo content — a *defeated-secondary-character cover-story* in the same mode as the Buggy *snowboarding / HAPPY VICTORY* cover-serial, applied to a *reformed-secondary-character* arc instead of a *recovering-villain* arc. Forward-payoff: the Loguetown reunion (Ch. 95-100 area) where Koby/Helmeppo re-meet Luffy as enlisted Marines.
  • Momoo
  • Sanji Joins Hatchan Coco Village Escort
  • Hatchan Cuddly Octopus Self-Description
  • **Luffy was stuck in stone at chapter open** (pages 3-9). Cliffhanger from the previous (off-vault) chapter resolves: Luffy is wedged in stone (legs visible, body buried — *I'M STUCK HERE.* page 5 panel 4) at the Arlong Park front gate. Cannot fight; cannot move. Zoro and Sanji are squaring off against the Arlong-Pirates trio of officers (Hatchan front-and-center, Kuroobi and Choo flanking, with mooks behind). The *captain-stuck-while-crew-fights* register is on-page — the chapter installs **Luffy-as-immobilized-asset** combat-set-piece; Sanji and Zoro buy time while Luffy works to free himself. *KLUNK!! / KLUNK!!* (page 9) — Luffy attempts to wiggle free, *I ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT YOU!!* (Hatchan) — but Hatchan grabs his leg with an octopus-tentacle and yanks him from the stone (page 11 — *KLUNK!! / SHOO!! / AAAAA... / LUFFY!!! / OH NO! I LET GO OF HIM!!* — Hatchan accidentally yanks Luffy *out* of the rocks while trying to club him). Luffy is freed at page 11 by Hatchan's clumsy combat-grip — the *enemy-frees-the-trapped-captain* inversion. Page 11 final tier (*BOING BONG / DARN. BACK HERE AGAIN.*) — Luffy snaps back to standing on the pier.
  • **Sanji confronts Hatchan on Luffy's behalf — *I was raised by a pirate*** (pages 7-8). After Luffy is *KA-BOOSH*'d into the rocks by Hatchan, Sanji enters the fray. Sanji: *'I've entered the fray on behalf of that fool of a captain.'* (page 7) / *'But hey, compared to a bunch of woman-hating crap-pirates...'* / *'My feet still won't come out!'* (Luffy, in stone) / *'...but that was a rather gallant act for a pirate.'* (Sanji re Hatchan saving Luffy by accident-freeing him from the rocks) / *'You're pretty strong, for a human...'* (Hatchan) / *'...to take me on, human.'* (Hatchan) / *'I don't think you've got what it takes...'* (Hatchan) / **'I was raised by a pirate.'** (Sanji, page 8 panel 1 — central, calm-eyed close-up) / *'Wanna test my gallantry, crap-fish?'* (Sanji). The chapter installs Sanji's *raised-by-a-pirate* self-identification — a new biographical-tell distinct from the Ch. 56-58 *raised-by-Zeff-on-a-rock* register. **Zeff is here named *a pirate* by Sanji, not *a chef* or *a mentor*** — Sanji frames his upbringing in **pirate-genealogical** terms for the first time. Forward-resonance: Sanji's self-identification as Pirate-Cook (not just Cook) is here installed at the **lineage-claim** level. The Ch. 56-58 backstory's *Zeff was the Red-Footed Zeff pirate captain* reveal is here re-keyed as *Sanji-claims-pirate-genealogy* — Sanji is **a pirate's apprentice**, not just a chef who chose to sail with pirates.
  • **Usopp arrives screaming — re-enters the chapter** (pages 11-15). Cliffhanger-rescue register from previous chapters resolves: Usopp arrives at Arlong Park running and screaming (*AAAAAAAAH!!! TMP TMP TMP TMP* — page 11 — *YOU MUST REALLY WANT ME TO HURT YOU!!*) — Hatchan (chasing him?) or Usopp himself in the chaos? Composition: Hatchan in foreground, mouth-open scream, Usopp in mid-distance. Usopp is recognized by Nojiko (off-stage panel — page 12 — *'BROTHER USOPP!'*) and addressed as *'BROTHER USOPP!!'* by the Nojiko-Cocoyasi villagers — installing **Usopp as Nojiko-Cocoyasi-side ally** at the village-recognition level. Page 12 (full-page panel) — the three-officer combat-party (Sanji + Zoro + Usopp) **forms on the pier** in front of the Arlong-Pirates side. Sanji's role-card: *'I'm the cook!'* (deferred — implied by the Ch. 73 cover-card register). The three-Straw-Hats-on-the-pier composition installs the *Crew-of-Three-Plus-Stuck-Captain* combat-tableau. Usopp's status: still on Cocoyasi-side per Ch. 76's *Nami-saved-me* reveal; he is **Cocoyasi-villagers-side ally** with epithet *Brother Usopp*.
  • Usopp Brave Coward Thesis
  • **Usopp panics and flees back into the village** (pages 13-15 — *OKAY, NOW YOU'RE REALLY A GONER!!! / AAAAAH!!!! / WHOOSH!!! / FIGHTING THE FISH-MEN!? A GUY LIKE THAT...* / *NOPE. NOT YET. / ONE MOMENT HE'S BRAVE, THE NEXT HE RUNS AWAY SCREAMING... / NO, HE'S JUST AN ODD ONE.* — *IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT YOUNG MAN!?* / *TMP TMP TMP TMP TMP*). Usopp shoots his Fire Star then immediately flees screaming back through Cocoyasi Village. Nojiko (page 14, full-panel close-up): *'FIGHTING THE FISH-MEN!? A GUY LIKE THAT...'* — first Nojiko-on-Usopp character-assessment. Zoro (deadpan, off-panel): *'NO, HE'S JUST AN ODD ONE.'* The chapter installs **Usopp's brave-then-coward register at maximum tonal-whiplash** — fires the attack-shot, immediately flees the consequences. The Ch. 28-29 Brave-Coward Thesis is fully on-page in a single panel-sequence. Nojiko's bystander-confusion (*'IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT YOUNG MAN!?'*) installs **Usopp's character-pattern is unreadable from outside** — only a reader of his Ch. 28 speech can decode the brave-coward duality.
  • **Zoro confronts Hatchan — *the tables have turned*** (page 10 — *THAT'S ANCIENT HISTORY. WHAT YOU THINK DOESN'T MATTER. THE TABLES HAVE TURNED. / AND YOU WIPED OUT MY COMRADES!!! / WAH!!! YOU MADE A FOOL OUTTA ME!!! / YOU GUYS AREN'T DOING THE TERRORIZING ANYMORE. / WE ARE!!*). Zoro's first chapter-line: a direct confrontation with Hatchan. The Ch. 74 *Hachi, you idiot!! That was him!!* (Arlong re Zoro-as-courtyard-massacre-perpetrator) **reverses register** here — Hatchan now recognizes Zoro as the *one who wiped out my comrades* (*'AND YOU WIPED OUT MY COMRADES!!!'*). The chapter installs **Zoro's reputation among the Arlong-Pirates** as *the one who beat up the courtyard* — Zoro is **villain-recognized as a tier-equal threat**. Zoro's calm-katana-drawn pose with the **WE ARE!!** counter-quote installs the *Straw-Hats-now-terrorize-the-terrorizers* role-inversion.
  • **Arlong on the throne, *lord-of-the-park* register install** (pages 4, 14 — *LORD ARLONG, PLEASE DON'T GET WORKED UP. / IF YOU LOSE YOUR TEMPER... YOU'LL DESTROY ARLONG PARK!! / YEAH!!* — page 14 final tier: full-page wide panel of Arlong on his throne, dark and looming, *WOOOOOOOO...*). Arlong stays seated on his throne while his officers fight the Straw Hats — the **captain-watches-the-fight** register from the Ch. 80 *I-never-break-a-promise* throne-confrontation continues into the combat-chapter. The crew's *don't-destroy-the-park* doctrine (page 4 — Kuroobi/Choo restraining Arlong, *'YOU'LL DESTROY ARLONG PARK!!'*) installs the **Arlong-Park-as-fragile-asset** beat — the **villain's-base-as-strategic-weakness** combat-mechanic. Forward-payoff: the arc-climax Luffy-vs-Arlong fight at the park's interior (Ch. 91-93) will see the *Luffy-destroys-Arlong-Park* register as the villain's actual-loss-condition. The Ch. 83 throne-shot pre-loads the *throne-as-target* combat-grammar.

Summary

Volume 10 opens with the Koby and Helmeppo cover-serial Part 2 (page 1) — both reformed-secondary-characters now visible at the Marine base as Chore Boys under Lieutenant Ripper.

The chapter then resolves the prior cliffhanger: Luffy is wedged in stone at the Arlong Park gate (cliffhung from the previous chapter); Hatchan arrives at speed by being flown across the sea on Momoo’s back from the Grand Line, sent by Arlong (pages 2-3 — MOOOO…!! …FROM THE GRAND LINE FLYING!!). The villagers gawk at Arlong’s single-fish-man-throws-Grand-Line-creature-across-the-sea feat (INCREDIBLE POWER!). The Arlong-Pirates front-line (Hatchan, Kuroobi, Choo, mooks) reassembles on the pier; Sanji and Zoro face them while Luffy is stuck.

Hatchan deploys his first named attack — HACHI INK JET (page 4) — to create zero-visibility combat conditions. Comic-failure mode immediately fires: Hatchan self-blinds and slams Luffy into the rocks (WHAM!!!… ON THE ROCKS!!!!) — accidentally smashing Luffy out of the stone-trap while trying to club him (page 6). Sanji takes the lead in Luffy’s absence: ‘I’ve entered the fray on behalf of that fool of a captain.’ (page 7); deadpan-spars verbally with Hatchan. The chapter’s biographical-tell: Sanji’s I was raised by a pirate. (page 8, panel 1) — Sanji frames Zeff in pirate-lineage terms for the first time. ‘Wanna test my gallantry, crap-fish?’

Luffy is yanked from the stone by Hatchan’s clumsy octopus-tentacle (page 11 — KLUNK!! / SHOO!! / OH NO! I LET GO OF HIM!!). Luffy snaps back to standing on the pier (BOING BONG / DARN. BACK HERE AGAIN.). Zoro confronts Hatchan with the chapter’s role-inversion: ‘THAT’S ANCIENT HISTORY. WHAT YOU THINK DOESN’T MATTER. THE TABLES HAVE TURNED. / AND YOU WIPED OUT MY COMRADES!!! / WAH!!! YOU MADE A FOOL OUTTA ME!!! / YOU GUYS AREN’T DOING THE TERRORIZING ANYMORE. / WE ARE!!’ (page 10).

Usopp arrives running and screaming into the chapter (pages 11-12 — AAAAAAAH!!!! TMP TMP TMP TMP / YOU MUST REALLY WANT ME TO HURT YOU!!); is recognized by Nojiko / villagers as ‘BROTHER USOPP!’ (page 12). Joins the Straw-Hat combat-line on the pier. Fires FIRE STAR (page 13) — first appearance of the Fire Star slingshot ammunition — then immediately flees screaming back into the village (page 14 — AAAAAH!!!! WHOOSH!!!). Nojiko (close-up, page 14): ‘FIGHTING THE FISH-MEN!? A GUY LIKE THAT… / ONE MOMENT HE’S BRAVE, THE NEXT HE RUNS AWAY SCREAMING…’ — Zoro deadpan-reads: ‘NO, HE’S JUST AN ODD ONE.’ The Ch. 28-29 brave-coward thesis is at maximum tonal-whiplash in a single panel-sequence.

Arlong remains on his throne, half-watching (pages 4, 14 — LORD ARLONG, PLEASE DON’T GET WORKED UP. / IF YOU LOSE YOUR TEMPER… YOU’LL DESTROY ARLONG PARK!!). The crew’s don’t-destroy-the-park doctrine installs.

The chapter’s final-tier cliffhang: Luffy bites Hatchan back (CHOMP!!! / YOU BITER!!!), Hatchan slams Luffy down (BAM!! / HE’S FINISHED. — page 16), Luffy is dunked into the pool (SPLASH! / HA HA HA HA HA!!). Sanji: ‘HOLD ON!! / I’M COMING, LUFFY!!’ — but Zoro counters with the chapter’s load-bearing tactical-axiom: ‘FINISH THESE CUSTOMERS OFF, THEN DRAG HIM OUT!! / THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY TO RESCUE LUFFY!!! / JUMPING INTO THE OCEAN IS JUST WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO!!!’ Sanji’s deadpan reply: ‘EXCELLENT PLAN.’ (page 17). ‘YEAH!! / LET’S DO IT!!’ Hatchan dives into the pool to finish Luffy off (page 17, final tier — TIME TO PLAY, EH? / WOOOOOO…). Luffy underwater, weakening, ‘CLUB CLUB’ (Hatchan club-strike SFX), interior monologue: ‘THIS IS BAD, I HAVE NO STRENGTH…’. The Sea Hates Devil Fruit Users Axiom is fired as the chapter’s cliffhanger: a Devil-Fruit user underwater is operationally helpless; the worst-possible-tactical-position for Luffy.

The chapter closes (page 18) with the SBS Question Corner (Volume 8): fish-men are mammals (Fish-Women first named); Straw Hat heights are charted (Nami 5’6½, Luffy 5’8, Usopp 5’8½, Sanji ~5’10, Zoro 5’10); Hatchan vs Hachi name-etymology (Chinese-style family-name analogy); the pirate-sash is a functional weapon-holster.
