Chapter 83: Luffy in Black

Summary

Volume 10 opens with the Koby and Helmeppo cover-serial Part 2 (page 1) — both reformed-secondary-characters now visible at the Marine base as Chore Boys under Lieutenant Ripper.

The chapter then resolves the prior cliffhanger: Luffy is wedged in stone at the Arlong Park gate (cliffhung from the previous chapter); Hatchan arrives at speed by being flown across the sea on Momoo’s back from the Grand Line, sent by Arlong (pages 2-3 — MOOOO…!! …FROM THE GRAND LINE FLYING!!). The villagers gawk at Arlong’s single-fish-man-throws-Grand-Line-creature-across-the-sea feat (INCREDIBLE POWER!). The Arlong-Pirates front-line (Hatchan, Kuroobi, Choo, mooks) reassembles on the pier; Sanji and Zoro face them while Luffy is stuck.

Hatchan deploys his first named attack — HACHI INK JET (page 4) — to create zero-visibility combat conditions. Comic-failure mode immediately fires: Hatchan self-blinds and slams Luffy into the rocks (WHAM!!!… ON THE ROCKS!!!!) — accidentally smashing Luffy out of the stone-trap while trying to club him (page 6). Sanji takes the lead in Luffy’s absence: ‘I’ve entered the fray on behalf of that fool of a captain.’ (page 7); deadpan-spars verbally with Hatchan. The chapter’s biographical-tell: Sanji’s ‘I was raised by a pirate.’ (page 8, panel 1) — Sanji frames Zeff in pirate-lineage terms for the first time. ‘Wanna test my gallantry, crap-fish?’

Luffy is yanked from the stone by Hatchan’s clumsy octopus-tentacle (page 11 — KLUNK!! / SHOO!! / OH NO! I LET GO OF HIM!!). Luffy snaps back to standing on the pier (BOING BONG / DARN. BACK HERE AGAIN.). Zoro confronts Hatchan with the chapter’s role-inversion: ‘THAT’S ANCIENT HISTORY. WHAT YOU THINK DOESN’T MATTER. THE TABLES HAVE TURNED. / AND YOU WIPED OUT MY COMRADES!!! / WAH!!! YOU MADE A FOOL OUTTA ME!!! / YOU GUYS AREN’T DOING THE TERRORIZING ANYMORE. / WE ARE!!’ (page 10).

Usopp arrives running and screaming into the chapter (pages 11-12 — AAAAAAAH!!!! TMP TMP TMP TMP / YOU MUST REALLY WANT ME TO HURT YOU!!); is recognized by Nojiko / villagers as ‘BROTHER USOPP!’ (page 12). Joins the Straw-Hat combat-line on the pier. Fires FIRE STAR (page 13) — first appearance of the Fire Star slingshot ammunition — then immediately flees screaming back into the village (page 14 — AAAAAH!!!! WHOOSH!!!). Nojiko (close-up, page 14): ‘FIGHTING THE FISH-MEN!? A GUY LIKE THAT… / ONE MOMENT HE’S BRAVE, THE NEXT HE RUNS AWAY SCREAMING…’ — Zoro deadpan-reads: ‘NO, HE’S JUST AN ODD ONE.’ The Ch. 28-29 brave-coward thesis is at maximum tonal-whiplash in a single panel-sequence.

Arlong remains on his throne, half-watching (pages 4, 14 — LORD ARLONG, PLEASE DON’T GET WORKED UP. / IF YOU LOSE YOUR TEMPER… YOU’LL DESTROY ARLONG PARK!!). The crew’s don’t-destroy-the-park doctrine installs.

The chapter’s final-tier cliffhang: Luffy bites Hatchan back (CHOMP!!! / YOU BITER!!!), Hatchan slams Luffy down (BAM!! / HE’S FINISHED. — page 16), Luffy is dunked into the pool (SPLASH! / HA HA HA HA HA!!). Sanji: ‘HOLD ON!! / I’M COMING, LUFFY!!’ — but Zoro counters with the chapter’s load-bearing tactical-axiom: ‘FINISH THESE CUSTOMERS OFF, THEN DRAG HIM OUT!! / THERE’S ONLY ONE WAY TO RESCUE LUFFY!!! / JUMPING INTO THE OCEAN IS JUST WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO!!!’ Sanji’s deadpan reply: ‘EXCELLENT PLAN.’ (page 17). ‘YEAH!! / LET’S DO IT!!’ Hatchan dives into the pool to finish Luffy off (page 17, final tier — TIME TO PLAY, EH? / WOOOOOO…). Luffy underwater, weakening, ‘CLUB CLUB’ (Hatchan club-strike SFX), interior monologue: ‘THIS IS BAD, I HAVE NO STRENGTH…’. The Sea Hates Devil Fruit Users Axiom is fired as the chapter’s cliffhanger: a Devil-Fruit user underwater is operationally helpless; the worst-possible-tactical-position for Luffy.
