Heavy Combat Beast, Arlong’s Pirates · Grand-Line-origin sea-cow · alive

Profile

Massive horned spotted sea-cow with a nose-ring. “Heavy Combat Beast, Arlong’s Pirates” (Ch. 73 page 6 on-panel name-card). Grand-Line-origin creature retained by the Arlong Pirates. Summoned by Hatchan’s trumpet. Speaks/thinks on-page (Ch. 73 page 6: “Hmm, no roast pig here.”). One-shot by Sanji’s Collier (page 11-12) and Luffy’s Gum-Gum Pistol (page 8). Flipped Gosa Village’s houses upside-down (Ch. 70, attributed to huge monsters).

Name etymology: Mōmō (モーモー) is the Japanese onomatopoeia for a cow’s moo — the name is species-direct, like Chouchou. Oda’s animal-named-after-its-sound register, consistent with the East-Blue creature-naming pattern.

Arc-by-arc updates

Fish-Man Island — deep-sea reappearance (Ch. 604) — resurfaces post-timeskip towing the Caribou Pirates’ ship

  • Resurfaces alive in the deep sea, now towing the Caribou Pirates’ ship after being “caught around here” by the underwater travelers (p.10) — confirming his survival after Arlong flung him across the sea in the Arlong Park arc (Ch. 83).
  • Recognizes Nami and Luffy (“Aren’t you Momoo of the Arlong Pirates?!”, p.6); Luffy “WINDMILL”-punches him. Momoo then turns on his own captors and tries to follow the captured Caribou, bellowing for “Big brother” (pp.7-8, 10).
  • Extends his defeated-monster-recurring-cameo grammar (trauma-recognition of Luffy) into the post-timeskip era. Cross-link Mohmoo Cow-Sea-Monster Reappearance Tell.

Arlong Park (flying-delivery-vehicle for Hatchan from Grand Line) (Ch. 83)

  • Flown across the sea by Arlong as a delivery-vehicle for Hatchan (page 2 — MOOOO…!! …FROM THE GRAND LINE FLYING!! / DOOM!!). Arlong has launched Momoo through the air from the Grand Line to drop Hatchan into the Arlong Park courtyard. The chapter installs Momoo’s role as projectile-delivery-system for Arlong, not just a combat-beast.
  • No further on-page appearance after the page-2 crash-landing. Presumably returns to the pool or is off-page.
  • Status at chapter close: off-page.

Arlong Park (re-deployed; flinches at Luffy; thrown through a mountain) (Ch. 82) — Re-summoned by Hatchan; traumatized-flees-from-Luffy register installs; spin-thrown by Luffy through a mountain

  • Re-summoned by Hatchan via trumpet (page 9 — ‘Arise, giant warrior!!!’). Surfaces from Arlong Park’s water-mouth (page 10, SPLOOSH / PLUP) with cow-spot full-face panel (‘MOO…’).
  • Identified as the monster from the Grand Line / one that decimated Gosa by Cocoyasi villagers (page 9). Local memory of the destroyer-monster lands on-page; the Ch. 70 Chabo huge monsters destroyed our village line is here pinned to Momoo specifically by name in the villagers’ voice. Pays off Momoo Grand Line Origin in part — the Grand-Line-origin status is villager-canonized here.
  • Recognizes Luffy on sight; flinches and tries to flee (page 11, FLINCH!! / MOO-HOO!!!). Big-eye close-up of fear-recognition; tries to swim away (SW-O-O-O-SH). The chapter installs the Momoo-traumatized-by-Luffy register on-page — the Ch. 73 one-shot register pays off in defeated-monster-flees-on-sight form. Sanji’s deadpan ‘Oh, it’s just him.’ canonizes the tier-perception-mismatch. Sets the defeated-monster-recurring-cameo grammar template for the series (forward: Coby/Helmeppo cover-story flees-from-Luffy, Davy Back Fight throw-projectile cameo).
  • Released by Hatchan; charges Luffy anyway (page 12): ‘Go ahead, Momoo.’ — Hatchan releases the summon-contract; Momoo charges (‘Here he comes!!!’ / ‘MOOOOOO!!’).
  • Spin-thrown by Luffy through a mountain (pages 13-16). Grabbed by the horns (TOMP!!! / TOMP!!!); spun in tight rotation (WHUP WHUP WHUP / WHUP WHUP WHUP); launched into the air (THWAP!! / BYOOO!!); crashes through rocks (SHOOOM!! / KER-PLOO-SH!!). Combat-tier escalation: from Ch. 73 one-shot-by-kick to Ch. 82 thrown-through-a-mountain.
  • Survives (per Ch. 75 Mohmoo Cow-Sea-Monster Reappearance Tell pattern — Momoo recurring-cameo character is structurally born here).

Arlong Park (debut on-page) (Ch. 73) — Heavy Combat Beast install, first defeat by Sanji

Arlong Park (first mention) (Ch. 70)

  • Off-page mention via Chabo: “they sicced these huge monsters on us” — the Gosa-village destruction is attributed to fishmen + monsters. The on-page identification of the monsters as Momoo-class is held for Ch. 73.

Forward-context

Momoo recurs across the series as a too-traumatized-to-fight-Luffy register in subsequent cameos:

  • Coby/Helmeppo cover-story (later) — Momoo encountered again, flees from Luffy on sight.
  • Davy Back Fight cameo — Momoo as a thrown-projectile by Foxy.

The Ch. 73 introduction is the only serious-combat appearance of Momoo; every subsequent appearance reads as a callback-to-defeat register.

Notes

  • First on-page Grand-Line-origin creature shown in the East Blue, anticipating the saga-transition.
  • One of the few non-fishmen members of the Arlong Pirates organization.
