Why this matters
The cuddly octopus fishman self-naming does two things simultaneously:
- Species-subtype canonization — octopus-fishman enters the lexicon as a sub-taxon of fish-men. Forward-payoff: the Fish-Man Island arc (Ch. 612+) reveals a full species-taxonomy (shark-fishman, sawshark-fishman, manta-ray-fishman, octopus-fishman, etc.) for fish-men.
- Personality-tell via self-adjective — cuddly is the first on-page personality-adjective Hatchan applies to himself. This is the comic-relief register made literal — Hatchan considers his own identity to include cuddly. Pre-loads the Sabaody-arc takoyaki-stand persona where this self-image is what reads-as-friendly to the Straw Hats.
