The seed
Why this matters
The Koby-Helmeppo cover-arc has been a serialized Marines-as-corrective-institution B-plot for the entire Arlong arc (Vols. 1-10, Ch. 83-92). Vol. 11 is the cover-arc’s first major hostage-situation — the Marines’ ability to protect their own chore-boys from fellow prisoners is on-page-questioned. Pre-loads the Koby Marine Career aggregate’s Koby-faces-real-danger-as-a-Marine sub-register — the chore-boy era is not a safe-period, it is a cumulative-danger-period that prepares Koby for the actual-officer-career.
Forward-payoff (pending Vols. 12+)
The hostage-situation must resolve in the next 1-3 cover-installments. Possible resolutions:
- Koby-or-Helmeppo escapes through cleverness — pre-loads the Marines-need-Koby-and-Helmeppo’s-quick-thinking register.
- Lt. Ripper (Ch. 7 lieutenant) intervenes — pre-loads the Marines-protect-their-own register.
- Garp arrives and intervenes — pre-loads the Ch. 91 Vol. 8 Ship of Vice-Admiral Garp cover-arc’s payoff.
