The first-meet’s cordial register is retroactively reread at Sabaody arc when the two are friends.
Why this matters
A pattern Oda uses several times across the series: a first-meet between future-friends staged in a cordial-but-distant register that does not commit the characters to friendship but also does not commit them to enmity. The Ch. 73 ferry-ride is structurally identical to:
- Luffy/Coby on the Alvida raft (Ch. 2)
- Luffy/Jinbe in Impel Down (Ch. 540+)
In all three cases, the first-meet is operationally cooperative without being ideologically committed. The character-pair’s later-friendship is structurally pre-loaded by the first-meet’s cordial register.
