Chapter 84: Zombie

Summary

Cover-story Vol. 2 of the Koby-Helmeppo Chronicle of Toil opens the chapter: Helmeppo on hands-and-knees scrubbing laundry in a MARINE-stenciled tub at a Marine base, sword-wielding sergeant behind him, CHORE BOY shirt. The Ch. 19 Helmeppo-as-rich-bully-son register is inverted by the Marine system post-his-father’s-arrest.

Cut to Arlong Park — Luffy is chained-and-sunk in the pool (the Ch. 83 cliffhanger continues; GLUB GLUB throughout the chapter). The Arlong Park courtyard is the chapter’s combat-stage. Hatchan (the six-armed octopus fish-man first mate) and Zoro face off — Hatchan opens with the species-coded Ink Jet (mouth-spat black ink, FLOOP) which Zoro dodges but which singes his hair-tip. Hatchan’s “…you’re absolutely right!!! Hey, it’s only hair! It’ll grow back!!” and Zoro’s “HUMAN SCUM!!!” register the duel as comic-but-dangerous.

Hatchan demonstrates a series of combat-feats — Sword Catch / Hachi’s Triple (catches Zoro’s three-sword strike on his three head-mounted katanas), six-arm whap-attacks, a gauntlet/glove-stretch grab from behind, and a three-ton Octopus-Fritter Frenzy jumping-stomp that flattens Zoro. The chapter’s structural reveal lands in Nojiko’s witness-statement (page 14): Zoro’s Mihawk-Yoru-chest-slash wounds are half-year-cripple-tier and Zoro has been suffering in silence through the entire Arlong arc. Genzo declares he will dive for Luffy (page 10) — the Ch. 80 Bell-mère-grove-defender register extends to stranger-who-came-to-save-the-village rescue. Nojiko and the villagers volunteer to follow; Genzo orders solo. Sanji intervenes — “IF THE FISH-MEN SPOT A CROWD OF US IN THE WATER, THEY’LL ATTACK…” — and dives himself to retrieve Luffy. On the pool-deck, Choo (the kisser fish-man officer) intercepts Sanji with a WHOOM projectile-volley + “DO YOU KNOW WHY NO HUMAN COULD EVER BEAT ME?” declarative.

The chapter’s combat-resolution lands in two beats: (1) Choo declares himself a 40th-degree Master of Fish-Man Karate — first on-page utterance of Fish-Man Karate as a named martial discipline; (2) Sanji one-shots him (KA-MIIIIII / KRASH!! / TUMP!!) with the calibration line “IF THAT WAS A 40TH-DEGREE PUNCH… THEN THOSE KICKS THE CRAP-GEEZER USED TO LAY ON ME MUST’VE BEEN 400TH DEGREE.” Choo sinks (AAAAAAAAAH!!! / GLUB GLUB).
