The seed

The payoff

Forward-canon: Ace dies at Marineford (~Ch. 0574) without fulfilling the vow. Whitebeard dies the same arc, never claiming the title. The vow is tragically unfulfilled — Oda’s signature pattern of the character’s articulated life-mission is the character’s eventual structural-failure.

Why this matters

Single-line tragic-vow pre-load. The vow’s on-page articulation in Ch. 159 (chapter the reader meets the character) is doing structural-tragedy work: every later Ace-arc beat is shadowed by this unfulfilled-vow setup. Compare to: Mihawk worlds-greatest-swordsman claim setting up Zoro’s pursuit; Crocodile’s I want to be Pirate King setting up his arc-villain failure.
