Forward-canon: the brother-relationship is canonized in the Luffy-Ace-Sabu childhood flashback (~Ch. 0582+, post-Marineford), revealing:
- Mt. Colubo / Dadan’s hut as their shared childhood-home
- Sabu as the third brother (sworn-brother, not blood)
- Roger-paternity of Ace (concealed under Rouge’s surname)
- Garp as their shared grandfather-figure (Luffy’s grandfather; Ace’s adoptive)
Why this matters
Ch. 159 is the franchise’s load-bearing lineage-pre-load event for Luffy’s blood family — every Foosha-Village backstory beat traces back to this chapter’s Ace is three years older than me; he left the island three years earlier line. The both ate the Devil Fruit line is doing forward-canon work on the two-DF-brothers structural rhyme that eventually completes as the three-brothers Luffy/Ace/Sabu triplet (Sabu’s Mera Mera inheritance closes the rhyme post-Marineford).
