Profile

WARNING: This fruit is visually pre-loaded but NOT yet named on-page as of Ch. 98. The smoke-emission from Smoker’s shoulders and the dark-skull-smoke composition between his teeth (Ch. 98 page 14) are the on-page Devil-Fruit-user tell, but the fruit’s name (Moku Moku no Mi / Smoke-Smoke Fruit) is forward-canon and is expected to be named in Ch. 99-100. This vault entry is filled with retroactive routing info so Ch. 98’s visual pre-load has somewhere to point.

The Moku Moku no Mi (Smoke-Smoke Fruit) is a Logia-class Devil Fruit that lets the user generate, transform into, and control smoke. The first Logia user introduced in the series. Currently held by Smoker (Captain, Navy Headquarters).

  • LOAD-BEARING — Logia-vs-Logia stalemate vs. Mera Mera no Mi (Ch. 158 p. 19) — Ace: “You may be smoke, but I’m fire. …We’re too evenly matched to settle this now.” First on-page Moku-Moku elemental-pairing canonization — smoke-vs-fire is a too-evenly-matched stalemate. Power limits & weaknesses

  • Universal: water/sea immobilization (canon DF axiom — particularly load-bearing for a smoke-Logia, since rain/water could dissolve the smoke-form).
  • Sea-Prism Stone — disables the fruit’s Logia-intangibility (Ch. 169 pp. 7-11). Smoker is captured in Crocodile’s Sea-Prism-Stone V.I.P. cage at Rain Dinners; his Moku Moku no Mi Logia powers are operationally disabled. First on-page Logia-by-Sea-Stone disable in the series.
  • Logia weakness vs. superior Haki (Ch. 690, pp. 9–10): Vergo demonstrates that turning to smoke against an opponent with superior Armament Haki “only makes for a bigger target” — Smoker’s intangibility is no defense; he is beaten by a Haki-clad bamboo staff. See Haki.

Lore & theories

Prototype Logia-debut

Smoker’s debut is the first Logia-class DF debut in the series. The element-emission-from-skin visual-tell (Ch. 98 SSSS~SS from shoulders, skull-smoke between teeth) becomes the prototype grammar for every later Logia-debut: Crocodile’s sand-dust, Ace’s flame-aura, Kuzan’s frost-breath, Akainu’s magma-radiance, Borsalino’s light-shimmer. The Logia-as-element-suit visual-grammar is first canonized at Smoker’s introduction.

Etymology

Moku-moku (モクモク) is a Japanese gitaigo (mimetic word) for billowing, puffing, belching out (typically smoke or steam from a chimney, locomotive, or volcano). The fruit’s name encodes both the smoke-element and the billowing-from-source mechanism. Smoker’s character-name (スモーカー / SumōkāSmoker) is also onomatopoeic-coded — the character-name-matches-fruit-name pattern that Oda uses for Logia users.
