- Sea

- Region
- Four Seas

- Name meaning
- *Kita no Umi* (北の海 'northern sea') with the furigana gloss ノースブルー (Nōsu Burū / English 'North Blue'). One of the four cardinal Blues of the One Piece cosmology, each named by compass direction — East, West, North, South — with the English 'Blue' replacing the usual *kai/umi* ('sea') in the romanized name (see East Blue for the four-Blues cardinal-naming rationale). Reputation register: explicitly NOT 'the tamest' (that is the East Blue, per Mihawk @0051); the North Blue is consistently coded as a harsher, rougher sea that breeds ruthless figures — it is the origin of the fallen Donquixote Family (Doflamingo/Corazon), the conquering Vinsmoke / Germa 66, Law, and a cluster of Eleven Supernovas (Basil Hawkins, X Drake, Law).
Region: Four Seas · First named on-page: Ch. 51 (Mihawk’s world-map) · First depicted as a setting: Ch. 761 (Spider Miles)
Profile
One of the Four Seas (Four Blues) that the Red Line and Grand Line quarter the world into. Unlike the East Blue (“the tamest”), the North Blue is coded throughout the series as a harsher, more dangerous sea — the homeland of several of its most ruthless players:
- Flevance / “the White Town” — Law’s North-Blue kingdom, destroyed by Amber Lead Syndrome and a quarantine-war; Law is the sole survivor of the Trafalgar doctor family.
- Spider Miles — the garbage-dump port where the fallen Donquixote Family (Doflamingo, Corazon) was based and where young Law joined them.
- Lvneel Kingdom — home of the explorer-botanist Mont Blanc Noland (Mont Blanc), seat of the “Noland the Liar” folktale.
- Germa 66 / the Vinsmoke — a royal line that “conquered the North Blue” in the past and seeks to reclaim it; Sanji was born here.
- Nortis — the rich North-Blue city the Bellamy Pirates hail from.
Etymology
- VIZ: “North Blue.”
- JP: 北の海 (Kita no Umi, “northern sea”), glossed in furigana as ノースブルー (“North Blue”).
- One of the four cardinal Blues (East, West, North, South) surrounding the Red Line / Grand Line cross. The English “Blue” replaces kai/umi in the romanized form, marking the four seas as a coordinated naming-set.
- Reputation register: not the tamest sea (that is the East Blue per Mihawk, Ch. 51) — the North Blue recurs as the origin of ruthless figures: the Donquixote Family, the Vinsmoke/Germa conquerors, Law, and multiple Eleven Supernovas.
Key chapters

- Ch. 101 — Nami’s Calm-Belt diagram re-affirms the four-seas cosmology (currents converge at Reverse Mountain).
- Ch. 192 — first in-story dialogue naming (“the latest goggles from North Blue,” Alabasta). (The SBS in Ch. 113 uses the term earlier as a goods-origin tag, but SBS is meta and a first is not pinned to it.)

- Ch. 286 / Ch. 291 — Lvneel Kingdom of the North Blue named on-page (Noland’s home polity).

- Ch. 762 — Flevance / “the White Town” shown (Law’s homeland).
- Ch. 765 — Minion / Swallow / Rubeck Islands depicted on Sengoku’s operation map.
- Ch. 813 — Sanji revealed born in the North Blue (Vinsmoke origin).
- Ch. 826 / Ch. 832 / Ch. 856 — Germa / Vinsmoke established as past conquerors of the North Blue seeking to reclaim it.
