Name meaning
Flevance (フレバンス / Furebansu), aka the 'White City/Town' (白い町 / Shiroi Machi). The coined name 'Flevance' has no documented linguistic gloss; its surface meaning is simply its epithet — the snow-white kingdom. The real-world model is Casale Monferrato, the Italian town nicknamed the 'White City' (Città Bianca) that grew rich on its asbestos (Eternit) industry and was then ravaged by mass mesothelioma deaths — exactly mirroring Flevance's amber-lead wealth-then-plague. Doubles the in-series Ohara parallel (a town destroyed and demonized for an inconvenient truth, leaving one survivor).

Profile

Flevance, “the White Town” — a North Blue kingdom and Law’s homeland, built atop a bedrock seam of white lead. A snow-white “fairy tale” kingdom of unearthly beauty; its white-lead products (tableware, dyes, cosmetics, sweeteners, even weapons) made it a fabulously wealthy global center of industry — a “symbol of glamour.” But white lead is a slow hereditary poison (see Amber Lead Syndrome); as whole families died of identical symptoms, neighboring nations assumed contagion, quarantined the kingdom, and gunned down fleeing citizens. The royals fled with World Government help; war erupted; Flevance “crumbled to dust.” Law alone survived.

Etymology

  • Surface: フレバンス (Furebansu) → “Flevance,” a coined name with no attested linguistic derivation. Its only in-text gloss is the epithet “the White City/Town” (白い町 / Shiroi Machi) — the snow-white fairy-tale kingdom.
  • Real-world reference (sourced): Flevance closely models Casale Monferrato, an Italian town nicknamed the “White City” (Città Bianca) that prospered on its asbestos (Eternit) industry and then suffered a wave of mass mesothelioma deaths from the same material that made it rich. Both: a “White City” enriched by a beautiful-but-toxic mineral that ultimately doomed its people. (One Piece Wiki, Flevance — Trivia.)
  • Structural echo: Flevance is the second OP nation destroyed and demonized over a buried truth, leaving a single survivor — directly mirroring Ohara (Buster Call + lone survivor) and the WG’s erasure of the Void Century. The name-as-epithet (“White Town”) is the visible half of a story about whitewashing (literal white ore / metaphorical cover-up).
  • Confidence medium: the Casale Monferrato parallel is wiki-attested and precise, but the word “Flevance” itself carries no Oda SBS gloss.

Key chapters

  • Ch. 762 — first appearance; the “White Town” is named Flevance and shown in the Corazon flashback (Law’s homeland, its white-lead wealth, the cover-up, and its destruction).
  • Ch. 764 — the establishing splash “THE WHITE TOWN, FLEVANCE” reappears (p. 15); the six-month “white monster” montage — survivors of Flevance hunted, hospitals barring their doors in fear of contagion as Corazon drags the afflicted Law hospital-to-hospital (pp. 16–18).
  • Ch. 765Law re-cites Flevance in his outburst against the World Government (p. 10).
  • Ch. 766 — referenced as “White Town”: Vergo identifies the young Law as being “from White Town” (p. 12).
  • Ch. 767 — referenced as “the white town” / “the steel fences around the white town” that Law is now free of (p. 16).
