Summary

In the City of Gold ~400 years ago, the friendship between explorer Noland and the Shandian great warrior Calgara (VIZ “Kalgara”) has soured: Calgara refuses to speak to Noland after Noland and his men cut down the Shandians’ sacred Ancestor Trees — the white holy trees said to house the souls of generations of Shandian ancestors, guided there by the sound of the bell. As Noland’s crew makes ready to sail home, Mousse (Calgara’s daughter) seeks out Noland for the truth: he explains the trees had already been ravaged by “tree fever,” a contagious plague that infects both people and plants and would have devoured the entire island; he felled them — at the risk of his own life — to save the Shandians, then said nothing to spare them grief. Mousse races to tell Calgara, but Noland’s ship has already raised anchor for the Lvneel Kingdom of the North Blue (course set via Mary Geoise). Realizing too late that his friend had been protecting them the whole time, Calgara rings the great golden bell at the water’s edge — “We’ll keep ringing the bell for you!! … We’ll be here… always!!” — so Noland will never lose his way back. Both men, weeping, vow across the widening sea: “Let’s meet again!” / “I promise you!!”
