Etymology

• Ore — 珀鉛 (Hakuen): VIZ renders it “White Lead,” but the kanji literally read “amber lead” (珀 = amber + 鉛 = lead). The trick: the kanji 珀 (haku, “amber”) is built on the radical 白 (“white,” also read haku). So Hakuen simultaneously encodes “amber lead” and “white lead” — perfect for a snow-white ore mined under Flevance, “the White City.” 珀鉛 is not a real Japanese compound; Oda coined it for this pun. • Disease — 珀鉛病 (Hakuen-byō) = Amber Lead Syndrome.
• Real-world reference: white lead (real spelling 鉛白 / Enpaku) is an actual lead-carbonate mineral once prized as a brilliant-white paint/cosmetic pigment, then banned for causing lead poisoning — handled, it poisons the body slowly, exactly as in-story.
