Chapter 761: The Op-Op Fruit

Summary

Dressrosa convulses under the shrinking Birdcage: in Primula, the town to the northwest, animals batter themselves bloody trying to flee the island while the Marines under Vice Admiral Maynard fight to suppress the rioting and looting, and word spreads that “Sabo” (Lucy) and Admiral Issho (Fujitora) have fought to a draw. In the palace, a badly-wounded Trafalgar Law and Luffy face Doflamingo, who monologues that all humans are vicious by nature and that, as a fallen Celestial Dragon, he still commands World Government power — even mobilizing CP0 — because he knows of a “crucial treasure” hidden within Sacred Marijoa whose mere existence would shake the world to its foundations. Doflamingo reveals he coveted the Op-Op Fruit not for its surgical body-swaps but for its ultimate power, the Immortality Operation — eternal life bestowed on another at the cost of the surgeon’s own life — and that Law “repaid his patronage with betrayal” by eating the fruit himself. Law, strapped with bombs, retorts that the reason he is alive is Cora, launching the flashback: North Blue, 16 years ago, the garbage-dump port of Spider Miles, where a young, nihilistic Law — terminally ill with only three years and two months to live — bargains his way into the Donquixote Family under officers Diamante and Trebol, meets young survivors Buffalo and Baby 5, and is introduced to the clumsy, mute, child-hating Heart officer who is also Captain Doffy’s little brother: Corazon.

• The Op-Op Fruit is called the “Ultimate Devil Fruit” because its highest application is the Immortality Operation — the surgeon can grant another person eternal life, but dies themselves in performing it (p. 9). Doflamingo coveted exactly this; he never intended to let Law eat the fruit (p. 9).
• Doflamingo, though a fallen Celestial Dragon expelled from Marijoa, still wields World Government leverage — he mobilized CP0 “just this morning” — because he knows of a crucial treasure within Sacred Marijoa whose existence “would shake the world to its foundations” (p. 7).
